Yes, Munson. He died the same weekend the Boys were playing the Raiders in the HOF game.

Officially no number has been retired by anyone in the Cowboy organization. However, the only people who's number hasn't been worn, and probably never will, since their retirement is Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, and Emmitt Smith. Officially their numbers aren't retired, but in reality they are.

You're trying to make your posts stand out from others. It tends to backfire. I was telling you this for your benefit, not to rag on you. You won't be taken seriously. Same as someone who posts in all caps.

HEY!!! WHAT'S WRONG WITH CAPS?!?!?!?! :D

Retiring numbers?

I don't understand why some of the greatest players of all times numbers are eligible to be worn again.
There are a finite amount of jersey numbers to select from. Eventually, available jersey numbers would be exhausted over time.

What's the solution? "Expand numbers into the hundreds?" That ain't happening.

Accept the fact that we, as fans, shall not outlive the sport itself. When we are dust, generations long after us will very likely be labeling Cowboys wearing 8, 22 and 88 as the greatest of all-time and their names will not be Aikman, Smith and Irvin.

Be at ease. Cowboy immortals are forever (literally) enshrined in the Ring of Honor and Pro Football Hall of Fame. If you wish to pick up the torch of fighting injustice, try addressing the exclusion of other Cowboy greats who have not been similarly honored. And trust me. There are a few who played before the 90's. ;)

The point is, no one cares about retired numbers. The ardent fans will always know that Emmitt wore #22, Staubach #12, Aikman #8, and Lilly #74. They don't need those numbers in cold storage not to know that.

On top of that the maximum for TC is 83 players and it used ot be 85 if you had guys in NFL Europe. That means at most you can retire 17 numbers before you simply can't do it any more. This isn't baseball with 25 man rosters or basketball with 12. Football rosters are huge. With the Practice Squads that is 61 players.

You also need to consider that positions have number restrictions. What happens if we no longer have numbers for all of our LBs because we have retired 7 numbers?

Their numbers are clearly displayed in the Ring of Honor. It works. There is no need to fix something that is not broken.
I also think it adds prestige when a promising player is given a special number. I remember thinking it was awesome when Michael Irvin was given the #88.

Smith will become timeless, he is the NFLs all time leading rusher, and anyfan with half a brain will releize Aikman QB'd us to 3 SB Championships and Irvin is one of the best WRs of all time.
They will hold the distinction of being the best at their number forever.

Drew Pearson?

I know the Cowboys aren't unique in not retiring numbers, but now many teams (of any sport) have two players who wore the same number and played the majority of their careers for the team and are in the Hall of Fame?

I would consider that a start.

There are still many more who deserve to be so honored.

Not a clue? have they ever even had a player to wear 12 lol.

did they retire it for Staubach?:laugh1:

Wow, I really can't believe you don't know this.

It's for the 12th man.... Fans.
No player wears 12 for Seattle, it was meant for the city of Seattle and the fans that supported the expansion team and continue to do it.

I don't know the answer to this (I may look it up later) but in my opinion we should have that for 3 numbers.

#22...Bob Hayes & Emmitt Smith

#54...Chuck Howley & Randy White

#88...Drew Pearson & Michael Irvin

Given the recent yes vote on Floyd Little some could argue we are due one more.

#43...Don Perkins & Cliff Harris

Three of those players deserve the Hall of Fame and have deserved it forever. Perkins was every bit as good a player as Little, if not better.

I don't see how Floyd Little was elected to the HOF with his numbers. He only had one 1000 yard season and averaged under 4 yards a carry in 4 of his 9 seasons. His career rushing average was 3.9 yards. For such an elite honor his numbers just don't stack up.

Howley, Pearon, and Perkins. I don't think Cliff Harris will ever make it but I feel he's deserving. Howley was one of the best 4-3 LBs to ever play. He was a playmaker.

Unofficially, no one should ever wear #22 again.

#88 should never be worn again, although I would love if Miles has 2010 as another great season he wears it starting the 2011 season, would be able to trigger a new cowboys tradition, Pearson Irvin and Austin all wearing #88 is beast.

I don't know the answer to this so I'm just asking.

But I thought I'd read many years ago that some team that had retired so many numbers over the years (maybe it was a college team) they actually had to "unretire" a number so it could be assigned to one of their current players?

Yes, some think that as of the first fifty years, only 5 (or ten or a dozen, pick a number) of numbers s/b retired. What about another 50 years from now, and 50 more after that? How many fives (or tens or dozens) of numbers do you retire (even "unofficially") before you run out?

Let's face it, Tex knew what he was doing when he created the ROH -- don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Its really simple. There are 99 available numbers for a 53 man roster. You start retiring numbers and after awhile you start getting squeezed within certain ranges. Specifically 20-29, for backs, and 80-89, for ends. We are one the most historied franchises in sports. If we started retiring numbers we would run out of numbers.

Actually it's a 61 man roster when you add the 8 man Practice Squad because they are assigned a number too. Then you have to consider that in Training Camp there are 83 players on the Roster and all are assigned a number. That means only 16 numbers are unused each year.

You also need to remember that certain numbers can only be used for certain positions. This could restrict a team even more if they have some greats at a position.
