I would hope that every player that puts on a Cowboy uniform does so with pride in its heritage & tradition, and that they will do their best to live up to its legacy.

I agree. I think Wade agrees as well which is why he has invited players from the past to camp

Addressing Underlined part:
I hope to be here to tell those kids that there idiots and that the Cowboys played before 2030, like you guys do with me now!
Smith will become timeless, he is the NFLs all time leading rusher, and anyfan with half a brain will releize Aikman QB'd us to 3 SB Championships and Irvin is one of the best WRs of all time.
They will hold the distinction of being the best at their number forever.

sporting greats legacy does tend to fade over time though. the soccer team i grew up supporting were founded in 1888. pre second world war i could probably only come up with two names from that era. of those two one of them is only really known these days because he died on the field of play after an accidental kick to the head in a derby match and the other because he scored over 500 goals.
the guys that we idolise will be little more than an afterthought in years to come i would imagine, in saying that video technology may change that.

thats entirely besides the point, its a sport which has enough history to disprove your theory. also if you think celtic means less to guys like me than the cowboys do to you then you're very wrong and pretty naive so regardless of how much you think the sport sucks the point is entirely relevant.
before the war celtic won 19 league championships, and 15 scottish cups. thats a hell of a lot of silverware so you have to think that the guys playing in these teams were pretty good players and idolised by the support yet within 60-100 years they are little more than forgotten names in a history book.
i know about most of the guys my dad grew up idolising me as he told me about them over the years but going further back not so much. its widely accepted that the greatest celtic team of all time were the late 60's early 70's but when i have children of my own i will be telling them about guys that i have seen myself more than guys who despite having met i obviously never got to see play.

I don't know the answer to this (I may look it up later) but in my opinion we should have that for 3 numbers.

#22...Bob Hayes & Emmitt Smith

#54...Chuck Howley & Randy White & Bobby Carpenter

#88...Drew Pearson & Michael Irvin

Given the recent yes vote on Floyd Little some could argue we are due one more.

#43...Don Perkins & Cliff Harris

Three of those players deserve the Hall of Fame and have deserved it forever. Perkins was every bit as good a player as Little, if not better.

Fixed :D

#88 should never be worn again, although I would love if Miles has 2010 as another great season he wears it starting the 2011 season, would be able to trigger a new cowboys tradition, Pearson Irvin and Austin all wearing #88 is beast.

#88 has already been worn by a couple players. Pretty sure Antonio Bryant wore it and I think, and am probably wrong, Oj Santiago wore it.

You are thinking of Jackie Harris the FA TE we signed in 2000

Yeah Bryant wore #88 for the Cowboys. I read where Reggie Rucker wore #88 for the Cowboys in 1970.

Honestly the only numbers that should not be touched again are

1. Jersey's of deceased players
2. Players who may have been a once in a generation type player not only for the team but for the league as a whole. (we're talking Peyton Manning type impact on the league)

Other than that the tradition of unofficially retiring jerseys is probably how it needs to be. No need in blocking off numbers for all-time use like the Yankees do, which is ok but very limiting to have 1 - 5, 7-10 (2 is getting there) off the books. Let the number fade away with the generation it was known for and then bring it back eventually.

IMO #22 should be retired but the arguments for who else should be included if that door was opened would go on for years.
