Would you be mad if the Cowboys spent more on outside FA this year, than resigning their own?

Osa's production will be hard to replace for what they can spend in FA...seriously..
They can spend plenty, all they need to do is decide to. Osa is average. Average, by definition, should not be hard to replace and the goal should be to improve upon it.

I agree here are the top FA DT's

  • Calais Campbell, Miami Dolphins. 2024 stats: 52 total tackles, five sacks, one forced fumble. ...
  • Jarran Reed, Seattle Seahawks. 2024 stats: 45 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble. ...
  • B.J. Hill, Cincinnati Bengals. ...
  • Osa Odighizuwa, Dallas Cowboys. ...
  • Milton Williams, Philadelphia Eagles.
Im not saying they "Can't" improve on it im saying they are going to need to move alot of contracts around to get better..those are not no name cheapies ahead of Osa who is also bringing a fair amount from FA..Bring me any of those 3 but that price tag wont be cheap. And the big question is would they even consider it or is it Mazi and this rookie from the draft...

It depends on who they decide to keep. As it stands, we're set to lose

QB: Lance, Rush
RB: Dowdle
WR: Cooks
OL: Edoga, Martin

DL: Lawrence, Osa, Lawson, Gholston, Joseph, Watkins
LB: Kendricks, Vigil, Harris
CB: Lewis, Mukuamu, Booth, Oruwariye, Goodwin

P: Anger
LS: Sieg

It looks like Lawrence, Martin, and Cooks are done in Dallas. Wouldn't mind seeing Lawrence brought back, but at a steep pay cut. Don't see it happening, but who knows.

Ideally you'd want either Lance or Rush back. I liked what I saw from Lance late in the year, and he has some upside.

RB has to be addressed, but I doubt Dowdle comes back cheap. Draft two and sign a vet to compete.

I'm not sure we can't find a solution to the IOL with Hoffman/Bass, and I want to see Richards competing with Guyton and Steele. Best pair runs the bookends. If an opportunity to sign a solid RG or T option presents itself, do it, but I don't see it as a pressing need.

DL is a problem. If Osa isn't retained, our best DT is Mazi. Either we pay Osa, or downgrade and pay a FA less. I say keep Osa. We don't have the luxury of drafting a guy and hoping he can plug and play. DTs take too long to develop and we don't have the bodies. Wouldn't mind retaining Joseph and Gholston for depth along the rotation. Lawson had a decent year. Probably priced himself out of Dallas. Sam Williams is back from injury, but bringing in a Fowler type or two wouldn't hurt. Especially if Lawrence walks.

We may need to bring back Kendricks, especially with Overshown's injury. Otherwise I'd definitely look to upgrade via high end FA and take a guy early in the draft.

Bring back Lewis and Mukuamu, Booth and the other guy can walk. Sign a mid tier slot corner for depth with Bland and Lewis manning the starting spots until Diggs is back. The secondary is in decent shape in comparison to the rest of the team.

Re-sign Anger and Sieg

On top of all of this, Micah is going to get paid. Maybe it's not such a bad thing that they're carrying over $20m from last season. Take the hit and prime the team for a run this year and next to close out Dak's time in Dallas. Lots of work to do and lots of money that needs to be spent wisely. If these guys actually want to compete, and SJ isn't blowing hot air, they're going to have to break the mold and go outside of the organization to upgrade the mess we saw this year. That's going to mean overpaying a couple of free agents. Otherwise we're staring down more of the same with Dak's body and skills slipping by the year.

It’s hard to even point to a real strength of the team when looking at the different position groups. They’ve really hurt the roster drafting for need lately. There should be no excuses for McClay this year because we need virtually every position.

Would it bother if you the cowboys lost the free agents on this team as we did last off season, if we were actively signing free agents from other teams? Not bottom barrel players, and not EVERY top free agent at each position, but some guys that could come in here and give us good play at a decent price point. What would your thoughts be on this???
Re-signing our own players is free agency

It would not bother me one bit if they let some of their current players go and signed some quality free agents. It would also not bother me if they kept their own players. It would also not bother me if they kept their own players and still signed some solid free agents. I don’t see this as an either or. It depends on the players they target and the positions they play and of course the price tag at the end of the day. A competent front office takes all things into account. I’m not as negative as many on this forum about the front office but one thing I have huge issue with is their dogmatic approach to free agency and their lack of activity there. By completely ignoring this avenue of improving your team in weak spots you are just tying your hands behind your back. It goes without saying you need to draft well and I think it’s important to keep your stars as well, but you absolutely need to buttress the team with mid level free agent acquisitions. Hitting in free agency on these pickups is critical to success.

Well said.

Obviously you have to re-sign some guys, but it doesn't make sense to only re-sign the same guys who aren't getting it done.

Unfortunately that's been the BS strategy the FO has had for years now.
I don't expect a repeat performance of last years failed off-season where we had a net exodus of talent. You can't do that when you are 7-10.

It is crazy to me that the Eagles not only used free agency to fix their weaknesses, they doubled down on certain positions. They drafted two cornerbacks, brought in two linebackers in free agency, got another pass rusher, a guard, a third receiver, and a backup quarterback. I am not even including paying top dollar for Barkley. This is on top of drafting interior linemen and pass rushers early in the 2022 and 2023 drafts. The Cowboys think they are smart by trading 5th round picks for Cooks and Gilmore. Chess vs hop scotch.

I’ll know their plan based on who’s on vacation the first day of free agency. I’m not hopeful.

We’re not getting anywhere with the players we have. However, some of them have helped other teams advance deep in the playoffs.

Who is going to explain how free agency works to Booger Brain?

This best bang for your buck us get if you're putting on a fireworks display, but will keep you around the rim in the NFL.

Winners take risks. You never hear other teams talking about the rim, and how the focus on the best bang for the buck.

We're talking the difference in Taco El Acapulco where they use cilantro and Taco Bell where it doesn't exist.
