"Which NFL Team is the Best?

At this point in the NFL season, when teams have played five or six games, we get a sense of how the season is shaping up.

There are numerous rankings of the best NFL teams. ESPN, for example has its Power Rankings which place the Colts at the top of the league. I don’t think too many people would argue that the Colts are the class of the league right now, but there are fans of the Broncos, Bengals, Bucs, and even the Steelers who could probably make an argument without sounding loony.

So, how do the Commanders stack up against the Colts?

Colts Offense:
The powerhouse Colts are 10th in the NFL in offense based on the standard used by the NFL—yards per game. They gain 339.8 yards per game.

The Commander of their offense is Peyton Manning, whom many consider the best quarterback in the league. Manning’s QB rating is 96.1. He has 118 completions in177 attempts with 1314 yards, 9 TDs and 4 INTs.

Manning’s main target is Marvin Harrison who has caught 30 passes for 333 yards (10.9 avg) and 4 TDs.

The Colts running back is Edgerrin James, who leads the AFC in rushing with 662 yards in 142 attempts with a 4.7 average and 5 TDs.

Commanders Offense:
The Commanders are 6th in the NFL at 373.2 yards per game. That is not a typo. The Commanders gain 33.4 more yards per game than the Colts.

Mark Brunell’s rating is 91.5. He is 103 for 178 with 1240 yards, 9 TDs and 2 INTs. That is correct; Brunell has as many TDs as Manning with half the picks.

Brunell’s main target is Santana Moss who has caught 33 passes for 631 yards (19.1 avg) and 4 TDs. So, Moss is having far and away a better year at wide receiver than Harrison; he almost laps Harrison in yards per catch.

The Commanders hand the ball off to Clinton Portis who has 443 yards on 104 carries and a 4.3 average with no TDs. Edge goes to James, but overall the Commanders use more running backs and gain 127 yards per game on the ground; the colts only gain 123.2 rushing yards per game.

Defense:
The Colts are 11th in the league and give up 300.5 yards per game.

The Commanders are 5th in the league and give up 280.4.

So, overall the difference between the Colts and the Commanders is not that great. In fact, one might wonder whether the Colts are better than the Commanders given that the Commanders stats are mostly better than the Colts. So what is the difference?

For starters, the Colts score 25.2 points per game and the Commanders only score 16.6. The Colts defense gives up 9.5 points per game and the Commanders give up 17.2. Basically, the Colts travel 13.6 yards for every point they score, but the Commanders have to travel 21.7 yards per point. That difference might not sound like much, but it is. The Commanders have to work 60% harder than the Colts for every point they score.

The reason for the extra work is the Commanders’ defense's inability to get turnovers and shorten the field for the offense. The Colts have 14 takeaways in 6 games for a 2.33 per game average; the Commanders only have 2 takeaways for a 0.4 average.

The Colts defense makes their opponents travel 31.6 yards per point. The Commanders defense makes their opponent travel 16.3 yards per point, so it’s twice as hard to score on the Colts. Takeaways make most of the difference here too because the opponent’s yards are wasted when they turn over the ball.

The Commanders are -8 in turnovers and the colts are +8. The Commanders could be better than the Colts if they could find a way to get the ball."

The difference they're missing is that, with the exception of the game against the Rams, the Colts offense hasn't scored much because they haven't HAD to. However, they're fully capable of going off when necessary, as we saw against the Rams. The Commanders, however, are not.

They're just as good as the Colts except in scoring. You know, the way you win games...

They're full of themselves. Then again, a two-game losing streak will do that to you.

In other words, the Commanders have been outscored this season, and the Colts have outscored their opponents by a margin of almost 3-to-1.

Basically, the Colts travel 13.6 yards for every point they score, but the Commanders have to travel 21.7 yards per point. ... The Colts defense makes their opponents travel 31.6 yards per point. The Commanders defense makes their opponent travel 16.3 yards per point, so it’s twice as hard to score on the Colts.

"Yards per point" is a completely ridiculous statistic. Let's say Team A starts at its own 20 and drives 80 yards for a touchdown. That's 11.4 "yards per point." Team B starts at its own 20, drives 70 yards, stalls at the 10 and kicks a field goal. That's 23.3 "yards per point." Does that mean Team B had to drive farther to score its points? Of course not! It means that they scored fewer points after starting at the same spot. Conversely, a defense that keeps opponents out of the end zone is going to have a higher "yards per point" average than one that allows a lot more points. It doesn't mean their opponents had to drive farther to score.

It's as ridiculous as the New Englander who tried to claim Drew Bledsoe was one of the worst quarterbacks ever by using a "yards per touchdown" stat. That was just plain dumb.

You mean skin 'fan'. I dont think very many skins fans would agree they are better than the Colts.

They aren't better then the Colts, they aren't AS GOOD, as the colts either. They aren't anywhere NEAR as good as the Colts.

When people need to interpret statistics to say they're as good as another team, you know they aren't as good as the other team.

If the stats could 'prove' their D is superior to the 85 Bears, surely they should prove their O is superior to the Colts.

When we allowed them to score two tds in four minutes to beat us in Dallas, WE gave them license to have delusions of granduer. BP himself said "you are what you are" last year when referring to records. Until we beat them in Washington we don't have a lot to say. The games are still won on the field and not on forums.

They didn't need that win to suffer delusions of grandeur.

And frankly, for any normal fanbase, one win out of what? 14? 15? isn't enough to pipe up, much less boast.

They shouldn't have a lot to say til their streak equals ours. Playing well for five minutes out of over a dozen games hardly qualifies for bragging rights.

But that would make them forever mute, and they know it.

They'd chest thump over a tie with a high school team. JV.

No kidding and neither is any other team in the NFL right now, the Colts are the only team that have seperated themselves from other teams.

What gets me is the author of the article seems to interpret the statistics as totally unrelated bits of information.

The fact that the Colts are +8 in takeaways could (likely, should) have a direct effect on the yards their offense could possibly accumulate due to the shorter field referred to in the last few paragraphs.

Or, the significantly greater efficiency of the Colts offense would lead to the Colts Defense being on the field more often...which could (likely, should) lead to more yards accumulated against them. They're 19th in Average Time of Possession. Kind of unusual for a team that's 6th in total offense, 3rd in points scored, 1st in points allowed, and who's RB is second in the league in yards gained, no?

Just came home. Gimme a sec and I will read it.

This guys blog or article is just stating that the Commanders are not as far off as some may think.

A little optimistic perhaps, but nonetheless.

Since the final 5 minutes of the Commanders game against Dallas, the Offense has been in sync.

The D is however IMO, a little overrated, same as the Cowboys, Indy, Eagles, and some others. Not a lot, but a little.

The Commanders won 3 games by 6 points. Lost 2 games by 9. There are as close to being 5-0 as they are to being 0-5. The Cowboys situation is pretty similar (not counting the Eagles bashing).

The Commanders have been in nearly every game for 22 games now. The difference between this year and last is that the Commanders have been able to convert 3rd downs, commit less penalties/mental errors, and actually make some big plays. The running game is still not what it should be but I believe that within the next few weeks the OL will start to click a little better with Portis.

They haven't separated themselves from anyone because they haven't beaten anyone yet. Just a bunch of creampuff teams, it makes me sick listening to the media talking about their defense. Personally I think it's the same ol crappy defense with one big time player. Watch New England beat them by 3 touchdowns on their upcoming Monday nighter.

The Colts have beaten the Ravens, Browns, Titans, Jaguars, 49ers, Rams...Wow I'm impressed ... Oh jesus they play Texans this coming Sunday. That will be a test ..

Can't argue with that. They're playing amazing right now. The only thing that can stop them, IMO, is an injury to Peyton Manning.
