TIDBIT: Matt Jones

I have to give credit to my buddy Chuck White for this but once he suggested it I really took to the idea. Matt Jones could go to Dallas, just in case Glenn doesn’t return and they need that third WR to make a tough catch in traffic. Jones is likely on the bubble in Jacksonville and could be gotten for a mid-round 2009 pick. He's a big, tall, physical receiver, and I’m sure boy genius Jason Garrett can find great ways to use him in their schemes.

Not worth a mid. A 7th that could up to a 6th conditionally, maybe.

Teams are looking at the extra 3 and 4 Jerry picked up like candy right now.

...you have a former #1 draft pick with soft tissue damage that is preventing him from competing for a roster spot on the team that originally drafted him.

We want him in the Cowboys camp to compete against a healthy Stanback and Hurd to see who replaces Glenn (knee issues).

What part of seeing what Hurd and Stanback can do is Matt Jones going to help in?

He can't push those two because he can't even compete in the Jags camp.

I need alot more to get on the Matt Jones bandwagon here.

That's actually me (Chuck) suggesting that.

You got that from my buddy Pat's website.

That's where I had previously posted my 'Case for Pacman Jones' article.

Jones can definitely push Hurd or Stanback, and definitely Austin for a roster spot.

He can bring a size/speed dynamic to the offense that Crayton can't.

"Soft tissue' can refer to just about anything, but I doubt it's anything which would keep him out for an extended period of time.

Why in the HELL would we pick up this guy? He's getting released by Jax who is a SB contender for pete's sake!

i didn't say it was me, so calm down a tad and back away from the tripple latte.

i don't think we'll go after him. as you can see from the rest of this thread, i'm sure, stash would love to have him here due to lack of other viable options. he's about the only person i've seen in awhile who would "bulldog" something w/o crossing lines of respect/courtesy.

would that other debates could follow that mold.

Loved reading this:

Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, didn't want to speculate where Matt Jones may be drafted, but said he helped himself immensely with his performance at the Combine. "Well, by golly, I tell you what, we might find a place for him," Jerry Jones said with a big grin when asked if he'd like to see Matt Jones playing in Dallas. "No one in Arkansas has to doubt whether or not it would be a good feeling for me to see him in a Cowboys uniform."

Jerry Jones, who played guard for the Razorbacks and was a senior on their 1964 11-0 team, is a major booster of the program and attends as many Arkansas games as possible. "I've watched Matt play his entire career and I watched him use that speed, and so it would have surprised me had it not been there [on Sunday]," Jerry Jones said. "But it's good to see it confirmed. I'd never seen a stop watch on him."

Matt Jones, 6-6 and 242 pounds, ran his two 40-yard dashes wearing a white headband, white shorts and white T-shirt. "What was impressive was how fast he ran those initial 10 and 20 yards, the explosiveness he showed," Jerry Jones said. "I didn't get the exact [interval] times, but I know he was one of the fastest off the line. It took him maybe two steps to get that first 10 [yards]."

...the soft tissue thing is a red herring. There's got to be a sensible reason why the Jags are letting go of a former #1 who has produced to some extent. Productive guys who end up in jail or in legal trouble I can understand the reasoning for dumping. In Matt Jones' case there is something wrong here and it's not a criminal situation.

Is this guy lazy? Does he have serious attitude problem? You have to be careful on those you add when you are on the verge of good season.

Just because he can run doesn't mean he is suitable to be a Cowboy. Issues about whether he could blend and support this team is more important in my mind.

His combine number look great from 2005 but his play has not been spectacular which is why Jacksonville is ready to part ways. No doubt I like having a WR with size and speed but in the end it comes down to performing and Matt Jones has really not done a thing to be getting his kind of attention. He is an avg. NFL player who if he were to come to Dallas will have to compete for a job

Thanks iceman, I appreciate that compliment.

Lord knows, I've tried to be as respectful as I could discussing the topic, which hasn't always been easy.

It's tough not to get overzealous about an idea you feel so strongly about.

I ask that you factor in a few things:

A player making a complete position transition from quarterback to receiver - it's tough enough for guys who have played receiver their entire lives

Playing in a run-first offense in Jacksonville

A place where multiple receivers have struggled to meet expectations

Now getting the chance to learn from Ray Sherman and Jason Garrett

Playing in an offense opposite Terrell Owens and Jason Garrett

Run 1st offense should help open lanes for WR because the safeties start cheating up and LB are looking more for the run so I don't buy that.

2nd he has been in a place that has had multiple WR and yet he has not been able to separate himself from the rest.

3rd I don't think he is a bum I think he is an avg. WR and if Dallas were to get him great if not no big deal I don't think he makes a big difference and in the meantime I do think our young WR may just surprise a few people. If he Jones comes I don't think he is a shoe in by any means.

I just don't think this is a big deal one way or the other.

I could have sworn I was talking in this thread with the exact name and everything. What happened to that thread? I can't find it on the other pages.

That's fine. But if it's a run-based offense they would obviously throw the ball less often. A lot of teams like Jacksonville, Tennessee, and Minnesota run that type of scheme.

A guy learning a new posiion is behind the 8-ball already. If Matt Jones alone was struggling in Jacksonville, that's on him alone. But when all of their receivers are, that points to something withing the team as well.

He would be this team's #3 receiver today.

Yeah, I would love to be 'surprised' by this team's young receivers. But I'd like a bit of insurance as well.
