How about this: There are 31 other teams in the league.

Obviously, not all would be interested in such a trade.....but there are several that would be.

Saying we have a chance at Roy Williams is fair enough....but I fail to see why we should expect him in Dallas anymore so than 49er Fans expecting him in San Fran next year....or any other fans expecting their teams to trade for him.
I can see a few reasons why some could expect him here more than in SF. If it were true that he wasn't a fan of Martz, and if it's true he wants to be home. Not saying I necessarily think either of these are the case, but as was stated, any trade certainly is going to be contingent on a long term extension, and if RW doesn't want to sign an extension at a place, then it's probably not happening.

He said he wants to "come home". I mean, how can you argue a fact like that?

I live out here in the Bay area and there is not one word of this on any of the sports radio shows but that does not mean that it is not true. The 49ers definitely need Wr along with a offensive line to help out its young qb's.

Just to add to your comment... I imagine if RW is amenable to a trade, then he probably wants to come to a team that's going upward. SF will be an average to below average team next year. Barring some disastrous happening in the offseason, Dallas will be a top NFC squad next year.

Leonard Davis was also a free agent.

Roy Williams is under contract.

But the subject, raised by you, was the fallacy of "popular wisdom"... in that context, pointing out that Bigg was "popular wisdom" this time last year is completely legitimate, and I suspect you know it...

I was mocking your argument that a trade for Roy Williams would never happen because it's popular wisdom, and that never happens... it does, and Bigg proves it does...

Well, for openers, Roy Williams was not a particularly big Martz fan, and that's being kind...

Then there's the issue of Roy saying publicly that he'd like to come home to Texas to play ball... now, money talks and BS walks, but sometimes these players are semi-serious when they say such things...

Combine those two, and I'll bet Vegas would put shorter odds on Roy coming to Dallas than they would him going to the Niners...

Popular wisdom built over a house of cards like this circumstance is hardly the same. And I suspect you know that too.

Since that is your logic, I suspect we might see Pacman Jones in a Dallas uniform next year as well.

Well, if he actually did say that (and it seems that he did), then he has a certain amount of leverage to make that happen... obviously, some other team might throw an obscene amount of money at him and change his mind, but all other things being equal, it would seem to give the Boys and the Toxins a leg up in this derby...

Perhaps I have a reason for saying it? I've never said it was absolute. I do blieve however that it will happen. And not because the fans are talking about it. If not this year, then in 2009 when he is a Free Agent. If he never becomes a Cowboy then someone will eat crow. I have no problem with that. Circumstances change.

I don't see how 'connect-the-dots' speculating is that far off here.

With all of the rumors circulating, it stands to reason that Williams is on the block.

He has often stated his affinity for his home state.

And the Cowboys are certainly 'in the market' for a younger receiver - in some capacity.

A key point I see being overlooked by some and outright disregarded by others is Williams having considerable 'say' in where he is traded.

And yeam giving up a quality draft pick will be looking to sign Williams to a long-term deal.

If he doesn't want to 're-up' in Detroit because he wants to play closer to home, why would he 're-up' with any other team far away from his home state?

If it was a huge money difference between a contract offer from the Cowboys and another team I could see it, but there's certainly no proof of that being the case. And Jones' history doesn't paint a picture of his being cheap when it comes to paying for players.

People talked plenty about Owens coming to Dallas back when word first broke of problems in Philadelphia and that happened - as did talk of Leonard Davis coming to Dallas.

Just because something gets talked about doesn't mean it won't happen.

About as much as something getting talked doesn't ensure it will either.

Explain to me why you think it will happen.

I'd love to hear it.

(Honestly)

I'd love for us to acquire Roy Williams. I just think the odds are stacked against us and as a result, I am not expecting anything to happen.

I think some of you underestimate the pulling power that a person's home town can have on their life. For those of you concerned with money figures - we do not pay state taxes in the big TX. That fact, friends, is incentive enough. While it might be a long shot (I don't believe that) as some of you say, there are many reasons to throw back at you in favor of Williams coming home. Why are some people so pessimistic?

What?

So because some don't think Roy will be traded to Dallas, its pessimism?

That's dumb.

Yes, it is pessimism when you don't take an off-hand comment about wanting to play close to home and concoct your own reality from it, regardless of any real-life restrictions that might be in play, like the salary cap, the egos on the football team, the team we might be dealing with and so on.

If that diagnosis was aimed at me it was a steeeeeeeeeee-rike.

Good reading though.
