It will make a huge difference because the time of possession will most likely increase higher than the 32 min per game with Elliot. Even getting it up by a few minutes will be huge as it could mean a field goal or TD given up by our defense less per game.

I think you overestimate his effect on TOP. It's rare that one rookie TB would have that much of impact to swing TOP averages by 2 minutes or more.

There are a lot of valid reasons to like Elliott 4. The whole he'll keep the defense so fresh really isn't one of them.

When the chains keep moving ,the clock keeps running and defenses are sitting on the sidelines .

I'm good with the pick. It's not necessarily the way I'd have wanted to go but given that what I really wanted were gone in the first two picks I'm perfectly fine with this.

I think I still might have finished up the O-line though with Tunsil but this will be a good pick I think.

Not really because with him in the lineup it will open up plays for other players. he doesn't have to touch the ball 30 times a game. Romo will exploit defences. We will see what the average is but if I was a betting man I would say it will be higher than 2014. 34 min is not out of the question.

Right.

Couldn't have been that we missed Romo and Dez and had to replace them with Weeden/Cassel/Moore and Terrance Williams.

Do you really think that 2014 plays out like it did if Romo and Dez were out?

YR

Not at all. I saw how horrible our quarterback and receiving play was. But we also missed Murray and all of the things he brought.

Oh, so the chains weren't moving much in 2014?

I do appreciate you guys who want to argue against actual facts.

No team, at least in the last 10 years, has had a TOP 34 minutes or more.

As I said, I think some of you are really overestimating the effect Elliott will have on the overall team performance, especially as a rookie.

If Murray was on the team last year with Romo and Dez injured, we still don't win 7 games.

+1

Hey rook, can you come in and gain 1,800+ yards rushing and get us to 34 minutes time of possession? Or am I asking too much?

See 2014 for the facts.

LOL.

I did.

2014, TOP was 3rd in the league at 32 minutes a game.

2015, TOP was 10th in the league at 31 minutes a game.

The notion that in 2014 our defense was really fresh because of the running game but then wasn't fresh in 2015 because they were on the field way too long isn't born out by the stats............... both years the Cowboys were one of the better teams in TOP.

Going to be interesting to see how this year plays out. I wonder how many Elliott fans who are predicting 1600-1800 yards and double digits TDs as a rookie will come back and admit maybe it was a stretch to take Elliott at 4 if he only goes for like 1200 and 7 TDs?

If you wanted a defensive player then you got a player that automatically improves the defense, by reducing the opponents number of offensive plays.

Furthermore, the defense will be better rested. Less plays mean less potential for injuries.

With a superior running game , they Cowboys can burn the clock when in a 4th quarter close game. There will be less pressure for the defense to make something happen, but they will better conditioned in the 4th quarter.

There will be better play from the backup quartetbacks because there will be far less reliance on the passing game.

There will be less potential types of plays that result in QB injury.

The receivers can create more space from defenders who cannot afford to ignore a potential run. Also, Eliott is a great receiver so the passing game will improve in that respect.

The offensive line will improve their pass blocking by ommision. Their morale and confidence improves when they get into a run blocking rythm.

Therefore, no matter who you wanted for whatever aspect of the team needs, Elliot improves that aspect.

All good stuff no doubt there is truth in all of it. But when there is 1.5 minutes left in the game and we are up 2 points and the other team is driving you will wish we had a better D.

Elliott should be leading the NFL in rushing. The only way he doesnt is if these idiots play McChicken instead.

Does the other team's offense get to rest too, or are they forced to do jumping jacks or something?

"Keep the defense fresh" has to be one of the dumbest concepts floating around in football.

It's even dumber when actual stats don't back up some of the claims too.

Time of possession has generally been a meaningless stat for a while now:

http://www.profootballweekly.com/20...n-has-turned-into-a-meaningless-stat/asoh7at/

Through 3/4ths of the season, the Cowboys led the NFL in time of possession, and had a 4-8 record to show for it:

http://sportsday.***BANNED-URL***/d...ys-still-lead-nfl-time-possession-really-mean

Exactly. All the evidence actually points away from the argument that gee, Elliott is going to make the defense so much better because he will keep them fresh.

They'll blame Jerry and claim that Garrett didn't want him.

Meanwhile Jacksonville gets Patrick Peterson and Denver gets Aaron Rodges.

Debatable. Many outlets are reporting (ESPN, some Baltimore reporters) that they wanted Ramsey at 4.

Many outlets are also reporting (and Jerry said it last night) that in retrospect Baltimore advised they would have taken Zeke with the trade up.
