This is not true.
So then, you've researched their productivity and you are impressed by the frequency in which they can make game changing plays from scrimmage, seemingly capable of scoring from any point in the field, the potential to turn any handoff into a 30 yard gain?
I cant seem to find the data necesssary to justify that perception.
There are those RB's that create fear. When they get a ball into the open field it increases our heartrate because we know anything could happen now.
McFadden eventually learned how to use the line to get what he could but there were still times when he would make contact with a DB and desinagrate.
Take away Morris's rookie year and you get a three year average of 4.17 yards a carry with TD's an average of every 49.5 carries. His longest career run is 48 yards.........ooh, terrifying!
McFadden and Morris scare no one, period, exclamation point.
I would also like to address a few more mistaken perceptions:
During thw Patriots most successful seasons they had a primary back that was either a 1st or 2nd round pick. Antowain Smith, Corey Dillon, and Laurence Moroney were 1st or high 2nd round picks. They only used committees out of necesity mostly due to injuries.
Since 2001, only 6 teams have run the ball more than the Patriots.
One of those teams is the Denver Broncos.
Again 2 of their last 4 seasons featured a thousand yard rusher by a 1st round pick.
You cannot easily find a productive back in any round. The lower you draft, the less likely you are to be successful.
In the past ten seasons 66.5% of drafted RB's were taken in the 4th round or lower. Only 6.6% of 1000 yard seasons were acheived by this group.
Conversely, 10.2% were 1st round picks but 46% of all 1000 yard seasons were by 1st rounders.
If you drafted a RB in the 1st round there was a 49.6% probability of a Pro Bowler.
The other six rounds? 7.8%.
It would be a wasted opportunity if the Cowboys didnt put a talented elite back behind this line. I would much rather see these DE's and OLB's mowed down like pesky weeds than watch them high fiving over the body of Tony Romo.
