i would suppose that just about all 'blacks', 'african americans' (whatever isnt offensive) are offended by the n word. why is it that most native americans- according to published polls- dont feel the same about 'Commander'?

I'm sure the people defending the name aren't "rednecks" they're just passionate fans. There's no need to resort to slurs to point out the error of their ways.
From that site:Danny White said:These guys seem more than a little offended.

By the way, they don't seem to think Redsk*n is a harmless term.
-Commander-
A HATE WORD DEFINED
The Seven Creeds Society will explain to you as one human to another, why the Native American finds the word Commander & the "INDIAN MASCOT" to be extremely HATEFUL.
Journey with us through the following photo essay:
A Commander IS AN ANIMAL
When the Native American is referred to as a Commander they are being called a non human.
What you are being told is the part of you that is Native is a GODLESS BEAST
If you do not feel this, it is because the ones who hate you have destroyed
the Human Being that should exist in you.
YOU CAN BE SURE YOUR ANCESTORS KNOW WHAT THIS WORD MEANS
What you have missed is how the word Commander came into existence and how it has been used.
What you have missed is how it has never changed...
TO THE NON-NATIVE:
Long ago when our people first met. You gave us a name to express your hatred. That name was "Commanders". You viewed the "Commander" as a big dumb animal. You slaughtered our children as you would slaughter the wolf. You skinned the bodies of our families and made leggings and tobacco pouches. You turned in the Commander of the Native American for bounty. Yes, you took away our religion, and you said, "What animal understands a higher power?" You confined us to areas because the modern man keeps animals in a game reserve. It was your game, your sport and your joy.
When we hear and read the name Commander, we remember the past. This is the modern day, the dawn of the 21st century, but as Human Beings we see you have no respect for us in the present. We are not allowed to move freely or to be free from your words of hate.
We are treated like you treat the animals,
"Stay out of sight and keep quiet Commander, and you can have your life".
A Commander IS AN ANIMAL
TO YOU OF
NATIVE BLOOD AND HERITAGE:
If you are a Native American or if you have the blood of Native people within you,
understand you are the survivor of a holocaust.
YOUR PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HUNTED AS ANIMALS. YOUR ANCESTORS WERE STALKED BY
A PERVERSE ENEMY WHO LAY IN WAIT EVERYWHERE YOUR FAMILY WALKED.
You have had your family and your dignity stolen from you and in its place is a deeply perverse set of hate messages swim before your eyes. If you can shut out the hate and the lies, you will find a profound emptiness. You family tried to protect you.
That is why you know so little of your heritage, so little of the ways of living
which are not approved by the self proclaimed "master of the beasts".
That is why so much of the religions, histories, and stories of the RED HOLOCAUST remain a secret today.
SURVIVAL HAS FORCED SILENCE ONTO THE HEART OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND YOU ARE TOLD TO BE COMPLIMENTED BY THE NAME OF HATE:
Commander
Danny White said:The answer is: it doesn't matter.
The percentage is irrelevant because the term is offensive. What makes it offensive? Just as the Supreme Court ruled on "what is pornography," YOU KNOW IT WHEN YOU SEE IT.
You don't need a focus group or a poll to know that Redsk*n is an offensive name for Native American Indians. How do you determine that the N-word is offensive? Do you take a poll? What about black people who use it themselves? Does that make it acceptable to name a team that? Of course not. It's an offensive term and would rightfully be banned for use in the NFL.
How many people would need to be offended by the F-word to make it unacceptable for placement on an NFL helmet? If I can't come up with an exact number, does that make it OK for use?
Come on Riggo, you're grasping at straws to defend your team's racist moniker.
Hostile said:Here ya go Riggo. You and gfunk both answer me this riddle.
Commander? What is the origin of the word? Where did it come from? What was the intent of the word?
Same as the N-word, it was a disparaging sleight of an entire race of people.
The fact that some people are not offended doesn't mean it isn't meant to be offensive and has been from the beginning of it's use in the English langauge.
The origin of the word guys. Post a link and back up your claims.
riggo said:again, why is it that non-native americans are speaking for native americans? can't they speak for themselves?
how in the world is that simple point 'grasping at straws'?
They DO speak for themselves! Look at the post above yours... are you blind?riggo said:again, why is it that non-native americans are speaking for native americans? can't they speak for themselves?

Avoid The Word "Commander"
Used as a name for many sports teams, this word is offensive by its very nature. In it's origin, it refers to the bloody scalps of Indian children, women and men that were sold for bounties aside animal skins in the USA. At this sad time in american history, Indians young and old, male and female, were hunted like animals. They were killed, then scalped. When these men would come to the trade post, they would receive money for their deer-skins, their, beaver-skins, their raccoon-skins, and their red-skins. It is a true shame that this horrifying word is still in wide use.
Gfunk - you were correcting spelling earlier, so thought I would help you out. The stereotypical rope would be wrapped around their waist, and your team would be the correct use of the word "waste".Gfunk said:wow, funny you speak of logic, so if ONE person is offended, everything must accomidate that one person? lol
wow, political correctness at its worse
you can find one person offended by everything and anything in this world... I'm sure you can find a rancher that takes offense to use of "Cowboy" with the corny big hats, sterotypical rope around the waste, yelling YEE HAW every day
please
