Who is Jethro Pugh?

Jason Hatcher had 11 sacks the one year they let him start. He was held back by his idiot coaches. And he only started that year because of injury.

Hatcher was up and down as a 3-4 DE. We actually wanted to keep Bowen over him after 2010. Ultimately, I think the 3T spot suited him much better than 5T did. He seemed to really be able to use his length to his advantage inside. Looking at his 2013, makes me wish we used more 4 man fronts in our 3-4 days. I dont think Wade ever did. IIRC we were a 3-3-5 in Nickel

Who is Jethro Pugh?

Jethro Pugh played from 1965 to 1978. He started 156 games for Dallas, that's more than Ratliff and Hatcher combined.

Pro Football Reference has him listed as the 52nd best DT of all time. Needless to say, he was a very good player.

That is what all of Dallas asked when he was drafted out of a tiny school. He was a stud next to Bob Lilly. He averaged 12½ sacks during one amazing stretch of his career (1968–1972)

How are Carver and Ekuban considered overrated? Just by draft status? Most fans didn't think much of either player. I agree Russell Maryland was overrated a bit. He was a solid player, but didn't live up to his draft status. He was a role player, but for where he was drafted one would expect him to be more like the other top Hurricane defensive linemen drafted around that time period.

Leon Lett was one of the best DTs ever to play for Dallas. Randy White and Bob Lilly were clearly 1st team, but Lett was right behind them. The problem is he made a couple of bonehead mistakes everyone remembers, but he was as disruptive as they come at DT.

The two bonehead plays never really bothered me, especially the one in the Super Bowl. It was a blow out, so that play had no impact at all.

I don't think Lett is right behind those other guys. It is a big step down from them to Lett's level. Mainly because Lilly and White were just so great. Two of the best in NFL history, not just Cowboys history. They played at such a high level for so many games and years. White started 165 games out of the 209 games in which he played over 14 seasons. Lilly started 196 games out of the 196 games in which he played over 14 seasons. White missed one game in his career and LIlly never missed a game.

Lett started 73 games out of the 109 games he played over 10 seasons with Dallas. He missed 51 games during his Cowboys career. He only started every game in a season once. Lett worked incredibly well when he was part of the deep rotation of defensive linemen of the early 90s. He was flexible enough to play both tackle spots and even a little defensive end. I think he was a great contributor, but he never was a great reliable starter. You need those role players that excel at what they do and Lett did that, but what White and Lilly did so much more. It is a bit unfair to compare most players to LIlly and White. They are what other defensive tackles should strive to be. There certainly is no shame in not getting close to their level because it is such a high level.

I think you’re dead on at tackle. I struggled between Haley and Martin at right end. It was 51% Haley to 49% Martin. Haley seemed a little more disruptive in the run game but Martin was an elite pass rusher. I had to go with Too Tall on the strong side. He posted 100+ sacks, played the run very well and batted down more balls than an Olympic volleyball player. Lilly and White side by side is just crazy. That would’ve been a sight to behold.

sorry guys, but aside from the HOF'ers, i just prrefer going with
guys i've at least have had a chance seeing during their careers.

feel free to do your own list differently, but Maybe once more i can get to see much more of
a collection of YouTube classic games of these 1960- early 70's' players, i could get much more a greatly observation feel for how guys like Pugh, Larry cole, George Andrie, etc impacted the game.

Didnt Hatcher play quite well in Rob Ryan's 3-4 defense ?, in fact he replaced Marcus Spears in the
starting lineup because Ryan wanted a more pass rushing threat, unlike Wade Phillips who was set on
making Hatcher a career backup.

Because of his productivity here, Skins offered him a big contract in FA, so he sought his services elsewhere.

he definitely was solid as a 5t for ryan but 2013 was his huge year playing 3t. then he got paid by the skins. i'm sure age had something to do with it (32 at the time?) but 4 years and 27m for that time was pretty significant

Ware is a defensive end, not an OLB. Even when we were a 3-4 he played it mostly as a DE. He would not have been a great player as a 4-3 OLB.
