You think they'll keep our offense under 22 points?
They could or we could do that to ourselves. He's a rookie in his first real game, mistakes will happen.

If I am their DC, my job is lot easier than Marinelli's. Stack the box and put the game in the hands of a rookie QB. I can disguise so many sets with that 8th guy, he won't know where it's coming from.

I don't put a lot on pretend season, good or bad, because I've seen too many come out when it gets real and it's not the same. And confidence in this game is based on pretend games with a rookie QB.

Losing Romo didn't make Linehan's job harder, it make Marinelli's harder. The heavy yoke switched to the D when he went down.
Yep. It puts more pressure on the defense . Let's hope they respond better than last year.

If I were DC I wouldn't be able to sleep a wink. I would be to consumed with how do I turn chicken-you know what into chicken salad.

You're the DC DC (and a push me pull you but more on that later) and you're missing your two starting DE's and MLB and your defense hasn't looked really good all preseason. Your best LB has another knee issue.

You've got a rookie QB starting his first game and he will need the assistance of a defense not putting additional pressure on him. But he has looked much better than anticipated.

You're facing an offense that has a good QB and receivers but their OL is suspect and they've not shown the ability to sustain a run game and the strength of their team is defense and quick strikes.

You're Marinelli, what's your game plan? Do you play it safe betting that they can't sustain long drives and play bend don't break? Do you increase the blitzes because of the OL and take your chances with your secondary?

I will wait until someone posts a good one, steal it and call it my own.

Myself and I know it is not popular is playing bend but don't break much as the 2014 team did. That is not to say you never take risk with the blitz but when you try to be careful of when you choose to bring it.

Kinda tough to put pressure on Rod losing his best 3 players in front 7.

I'd consider doing something bizarre on DE. Like trying Gathers or Escobar.

Stick to the basics and get a feel for what they want to do. Blitz the hell out of them if needed. Hog tie OBJ. :starspin:

Tom Landry as DC in NY had a 5-2 defense . Put 5 DL on LOS.All out pressure. Let our Safeties play more like LB .

Once Lee gets hurt we're going to be real weak at LB. Ha

I think we need to get creative. We can't just sit back there and wait on offenses to attack.

Eli does not get sacked...even when the opposition has really good pass rushers. You stop the run....hopefully get them in 3rd and 7+. Hope they have a penalty or drop here and there that kills drives or forces FGs. You will have to hold them to 20 to win.
Since they altered his steps and his lead foot changed, the ball comes out a lot faster so sacking him is a challenge. His OC got the HC job because he changed the way Manning played and stopped getting him clobbered.

When blitzing him, it is not Beckham that I fear, it's the other ones we don't know much about. And for any team to be successful with the blitz, they have to have good tacklers on the back end. Are we?

Of course I HOPE....HOPE.....Dak is the answer. But I don't think I need to remind you how much of a struggle it was last year just to get FIRST DOWNS! This coaching staff did things to deliberately not expose this defense....and it led to us not getting many points scored on us...but us not scoring points in the process. If you really want to know whether you have a 4th round steal in Dak....play football...and let the W/L record fall where it may.

We all want to win. But let's not fool ourselves. This is not the 85 Bears, 2000 Ravens, or the 2015 Seahawks defense. We are not competing for a SB with a combination of a rookie QB and this defense. But for once...this organization and fanbase could feel good about the next 10 years IF.....IF....Dak is the real deal. And throwing on 1st and 2nd down....then having him read one side of the field and firing the ball out of bounds does not answer the biggest question going into next offseason: Do we have our future franchise QB on the roster.

As I have stated many times on this forum....all I expected last year was a PROFESSIONAL football performance last year once Romo was out. Yet we coached like "don't mess it up and Romo will make save us when he gets back". That approach made us look like an expansion team many times last year. Hopefully this organization has learned its lesson.

I don't trust the personnel on this defense. Jones is athletic enough to run with people or go sideline to sideline....but is he instinctive enough to diagnose a play, jump a route and take the ball away? I don't see any evidence of that. We have nothing but unknowns at LBer outside of Sean Lee. And he is already hurt. The DL is filled with JAGs. So our problems on defense are bigger than "can we tackle"? I think we will keep everything in front of us...gang tackle by getting several people to fly to the ball. And try to force teams to kick FGs. There are no "catalytic" players...as Parcells used to call them....on this defense.

Didn't we play a 5-2 against the Patriots last year?

I think if Cowboys try to generate pressure with blitzes they will die by those blitzes. Landry had talent on those NY Giant defense. Bringing the blitz puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you have talent when you lack and fail to get that QB most in this league will make you pay. This defense can't allow teams to be hanging up big numbers and expecting the offense with a rookie QB to play the shoot out game. 2014 defense played a lot of bend but don't break, Rod had them swarming to the ball and ripping at it and created turnovers but he did not blitz much.
