Mel Kipers Rookie Rankings. Its an insider article so I thought I'd share with the Zoners!
Here are the usual parameters:

• This is a measure for all games this season, not just last Sunday.
• Total snap count matters. Staying on the field is a measure of value.
• Positional value matters, but overall performance and impact on the team matter more.
• Relative value matters. I ask: Would this player be a starter on most teams, or on a good team? Remember, I've hit reset on these players as far as future value; this is all about production.

Here's my latest ranking of the top 15 rookies in the NFL:
i

1. Zack Martin, OG, Dallas Cowboys

The story of the season for Dallas has been the effectiveness of the offensive line. And what's remarkable about that unit is if you go through every game (and that's my Monday this year), you realize that Martin has been the most consistent player. He's been outstanding, probably a top-10 player at the position league-wide. And remember, this is a guy who could flip outside to tackle.

i

2. C.J. Mosley, ILB, Baltimore Ravens

Mosley hasn't had many splash plays over the past couple weeks, but he's also been relatively mistake-free. I didn't "drop" him as much as Martin has just been exceptional. Not to overstate it, but Mosley really looks like the long-term answer and leader of this linebacking corps. He's not in the same mold as Ray Lewis, he's just going to be among the NFL's best in his own way.

i

3. Aaron Donald, DT, St. Louis Rams
If you just went on a per-play basis, my Defensive Rookie of the Year pick would probably be No. 1 overall here. But Donald didn't get starter snaps until Week 6. He's still playing on a rotational basis, but that's normal, and keeps him fresh, which has been a problem for offenses. He's going to lead the rookie class in sacks at this point. He's constantly in the backfield.

i

4. Khalil Mack, OLB, Oakland Raiders
As I noted above, Mack isn't a player you can judge based just on sack totals. But watch him on a play-to-play basis and you're seeing a guy who is just a dynamo against the run. He plays with such balance, leverage and does a great job of shedding blocks and finding the ball carrier, or containing him. Mack has more than justified his pick slot.

i

5. Anthony Barr, OLB, Minnesota Vikings
Barr doesn't rush the passer constantly, but the Vikings have done a good job of taking advantage of that part of his game more often recently, and the instincts you saw at UCLA are showing up. What's really impressive about Barr is how he already looks like such a complete player -- remember, this kid is just a couple years removed from playing offense.

i

6. Joel Bitonio, OG, Cleveland Browns
Bitonio has been rock-solid, particularly in the run game, which is a big reason the Browns are where they are. Cleveland had some hiccups after the loss of Alex Mackat center, but the line has shown improvement over the past couple weeks, and Bitonio and veteran Joe Thomas are a big reason why.

i

7. Mike Evans, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Evans has 249 yards and three touchdowns in the past two weeks, and he's now piling up targets. When Evans was drafted, I noted his ability to separate might be an issue because he's not a great change-of-speed runner, but that's not an issue when you can simply throw to him when he's covered. He's making contested catches.

i

8. Corey Linsley, C, Green Bay Packers
In part because of the offense he came from, Linsley looks more comfortable early in his career using his quickness and power as a run-blocker, creating angles and getting to the second level. But he's been good enough in protection, and the Green Bay offense has certainly gotten things ramped up. I'm really interested to see him next time he runs into Mr. Suh.

i

9. Sammy Watkins, WR, Buffalo Bills
He had just three catches against Miami on Thursday night, but don't put all of that on Watkins, as his QB didn't help him much on a couple of those. At this point, Watkins is far and away the Bills' leader in targets (84) and TD catches (5), and with nine catches of 20-plus yards, he's shown he can create the big play. He's a constant threat after the catch.

i

10. E.J. Gaines, CB, St. Louis Rams
Arguably the biggest steal of the 2014 NFL draft so far, Gaines is doing really good work in relative anonymity. But every week he's making plays. He leads the Rams in passes defended and basically never comes off the field -- maybe a handful of plays a game in non-passing situations. This is a guy who makes me wonder what I was missing when I watched him at Mizzou.

11. Odell Beckham Jr., WR, New York Giants

He already looks like the No. 1 threat in this offense. Beckham can beat you with quickness or fight through contact. It's all there.

12. Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Carolina Panthers

He hauled in just five of 17 targets during the past two weeks, but the real problem in Carolina is the blocking. It limits timing.

13. Preston Brown, OLB, Buffalo Bills

He leads a really good defense in tackles (69) going into Thursday night.

14. Avery Williamson, ILB, Tennessee Titans

Williamson didn't really play much until Week 5, but he's proven himself a worthy starter since then. Could be a Round 5 steal.

15. Chris Borland, ILB, San Francisco 49ers

So he didn't play much at all until four weeks ago. But Borland has been flat-out awesome the past two weeks.

Notes
Brandin Cooks
: He has 48 catches, but I'd love to see the Saints use him to stretch the field more often.

Derek Carr: By historical standards, Carr has had a good rookie season, and you're really seeing flashes.

John Brown: It'll be interesting to see him with Drew Stanton since Stanton has looked his way often.

Chandler Catanzaro: He finally misses a field goal. But it was beyond 50 yards, and he's 17-of-18 overall.

Allen Robinson: Robinson is done for the year, but deserves recognition as he'd really been coming on.

Ha, I remember 3 weeks in, the Donald-Haters were loving the fact that he wasn't starting yet and proclaiming that he'd have been a wasted pick.

Martin has been a great pick-up though, he was my second choice behind Donald but being that Martin was the only one that stonewalled Donald in pre-draft prep, obviously we made a pretty good call - not that it was a choice between the two.

what is this from?

Seems like ESPN

Good list by "the hair".Gushes about Martin. Would have been nice to get Bitonio as well,a lot of us liked him. Cleveland gonna be really interesting now that Gordon is back.

Very difficult to rue missing out on Donald when Martin has been so fantastic.

Nice to see three guys who we know Dallas was interested in (Martin, Donald, Barr) all ranked in the top 5. Whatever Dallas is doing personnel wise... they need to keep it up.

Well deserved. If only we could go back in time and use the Mo pick on another lineman.

Hard to argue with the Martin pick. Broaddus said he is our best OL this year. Frederick said in an interview that Martin is way ahead of where he was in his rookie season. Before the season no one was sure if they were serious or just paying lip service to running the ball more. Having Martin out there sure makes it easier to not abandon it. I maintain that the ability to run the ball is critical especially if we make it to the playoffs.

Yep!
Now if only we could get another couple of first round picks. :)

The funny thing is, I'm about 100% sure thats what we would've done had we not traded up for Claiborne. Smh

Yep. Stephen Jones said after that draft that is who they would have taken had the draft fallen the same way. It is just another indicator of how well the team is judging talent these days.

Below is part of something that I wrote on another board:

Jerry went off the reservation which was one of the rare occasions where Jerry reverted back to his old ways. It is why Garrett was fuming on the war room cam. Claiborne had not even been interviewed by the team one time, and very little time was actually spent by the scouts and coaches to evaluate him because they knew he would go very early. Jerry just couldn't help himself when the Rams offered a move up to pick #6 for way less than it would typically cost. It was a good deal so Jerry pulled the trigger despite Garrett and Stephen advising against it. Basically, Jerry just drafted Claiborne because he was supposed to be the best defensive player in that draft according to the Mel Kiper's of the world... not because his own coach and scouts told him he was good.

Even in that draft though, you could tell that Garrett was looking at the right players. Stephen Jones said that had they not made the trade for Claiborne, they would have taken DT Michael Brockers with the 14th pick and LB Bobby Wagner with their second round pick. Both of those guys have turned out very good. Their 3rd round pick of Tyrone Crawford has been a really good one too. He was the best DL prior to tweaking his knee a couple of weeks ago.

Our young O-Line is what has me extremely excited about the future of this team. They're going to make the next QB/RB better, no matter how good they may be when they get here. Health permitting, of course, the line will be set for the next decade with just one more piece (I'm referring to Free's replacement when the time for the need comes--if we get lucky, we'll get his replacement in some round later than the first).

I don't trust any rookie ranking list from Kiper that doesn't have Anthony Hitchens on it.

Hitchens kinda reminds me of the Bradie James pick (wasn't James a 4th rounder?). I don't recall James coming in with a lot of hype/expectations, but he was solid for several years. I think Hutchins can be even better.

Please provide any source that Garrett or Stephen was fuming, especially considering this very same year they went out and paid major money for Brandon Carr in March. This team was looking to cement a pair of starting CBs that very year. Please spare the Garrett 'vision'.

http://www.***BANNED-URL***/sports/...own-the-cowboys-2012-draft-round-by-round.ece

"Stephen Jones laid pre-draft groundwork for a trade with the Rams should Claiborne be available at 6. He was, and it came at a hefty cost to the Cowboys — their second-round draft pick."

They already had a plan per reports.

Jerry on the other hand did over-rule scouts to take Frederik the very next year over Floyd and Stephen Jones admitted this flat-out. And Callahan knows his OL much better than any of these guys.
