Cowboys DC Mike Zimmer on DT Mazi Smith: “Obviously he was a high draft pick, and I heard that he kinda struggled a little bit last year. We’re gonna start with the basics, get him in a good stance, get him using his hands the right way, getting his footwork the right way, and then kinda go from there. … We anticipate that he’s gonna be a good player like he was in college.”

Great - basically like the kid never played footballl before.

Well if you are just eating up doubles teams all day long, I can understand that.
It's hard to "eat up double teams all day" if you're not on the field to start with.

I'm willing to give him a new start with his current weight, program.

I'm hoping Mazi comes into his own under Mike Zimmer.

The coaching let him down under Dan Quinn.

Did we let Schoonmaker down as well?

I wonder if Mazi was *not* a Quinn pick, but more of a McCarthy and McClay pick.

Never underestimate the power of Spite.
It was an odd pick.

Especially when we needed RB/OL help.

Also, Hankins was clearly the starter.

IMO Quinn didn't just not develop Mazi, he destroyed him. Mazi was a "soak up blockers" big man in Michigan and he was big enough coming into the league to at least do that. Instead, Quinn took away his only positive attribute in trying to get him to play small.

I had a lot of respect for Quinn at one point but I swear that he had one foot out the door all year last year. That GB game still baffles me.

Mazi weighing 305 right now is one of the stupidest things this front office has ever done. They are colossal morons. I can't emphasize this enough.
And people scoff @ me when I say this front office ruins careers. Position flex is so overrated...I think it hurts development more than it helps. Case in point..watch what happens to Beebe...and Guyton. Being asked to play new positions on the fly...because the team needs it...not necessarily because it's in the best interest of the player..
Nor their best positions.

He’s a big body A gap DT.

Zimmers scheme puts the DT in the B gap.

DEs are in the C Gap.

He likely doesn’t make it here.

They should trade him.
I don’t think you’d get a 3rd for him. His draft stock was based on his athletic ability not foitball talent. And that’s not really helped him much since he’s so slow off snap and has poor leverage. He’s a freak athlete so hopefully Zimmer and teach him to be a football player. Otherwise he’s the next taco

He was the wrong pick for the scheme we had. That’s a big problem with changing scheme every few years. Ravens, Steelers can change DC buy scheme isn’t changing so you don’t waste pickd on guys that don’t fit

You are right. They will. because they refuse to use FA to address needs, and didnt use not 1 but 2 drafts to bring a RB in. So now they have to react and waste a top pick on a back.

They obviously know what they are doing though.
They don’t have the cap.

Dan Quinn was a huge part of our success here for a few years, but it was also a huge part of our going soft at the end of the season last year and our collapse versus Green Bay.

There was nothing stout about Dan Quinn.

I loved Zimmer when he was here back in the day, but I’ll tell you I want it Rex Ryan for the job however I can’t tell you how happy I am that Zimmer and has taken over the defense.

Maybe just maybe a lot of the guys they let go on defense also quit along with Dan Quinn brutal day we lost to Green Bay one which I’ll probably never forget.

House cleaned
Dak and his INTs didn’t help.

The Chiefs and possibly the Saints were drafting Mazi if the Cowboys didn't.
I, for one, haven't given up on him and neither has a determined Mike Zimmer.

I honestly believe he'll go out of his way to help Mazi overcome his woes & weaknesses.

I'm glad you brought up the little-known fact that there were other teams that found him desirable, also.

They could have easily made room.

The saints never have cap. Yet they signed more than a long snapper and an over the hill RB didnt they?
They still have 40 million in dead cap for Dak next season.

Also, they are underwater right now.

Plus Martin has tons of dead money.

That’s why they are playing it safe with our cap.
