Sturm/PFF: Osa contract projection

..not dissing on Osa, I like the guy. Really wish we could keep him.

But its a business. He'll want his money.
Same here.

The Dallas Cowboys have a homegrown player who is their priority free agent.

The Cowboys have taken significant steps to improve their defense, starting with hiring high-energy Defensive Coordinator Matt Eberflus. One issue is that the defense needs to sign one of their stars, who will play a major role in a defense that expects to create pressure with the front four.

Micah Parsons is the most important chess piece on the defensive side, but Parsons will need help, and that is where Osa Odighizuwa can lend a hand. Odighizuwa is set to become a highly sought-after free agent among several teams throughout the NFL, and the Cowboys can stop him from reaching free agency if Jerry Jones steps up.

LOL at that last paragraph. If some team pays him $28MM a year on average it better not be freaking us. That's absurd. He's not nearly that good.

Odighizuwa is a prime candidate for the tag as the Cowboys should seriously attempt to keep him on the roster. He's a top-tier three-technique and with Matt Eberflus taking over the defense, his role at defensive tackle is crucial for the defensive line. Losing him would make what's already a significant weakness an even worse one.

However, Osa knows the defensive tackle market has been booming in recent years, with the highest-paid player at the position making $31.75M per year (Chris Jones. It won't be easy to agree to a long-term extension with Odighizuwa while balancing a Micah Parsons' future extension and Dak Prescott's and CeeDee Lamb's deals from last year. Doable, yes. But it will be a challenge.

The team would then be knee deep in a very serious defensive rebuild.

Stephen and the staff won't be dealing that level out.

As such, placing the tag on Odighizuwa makes sense. Over the Cap projects the DT tag to cost $23.46 million. Since it's fully guaranteed, that number is the cap hit as well.

Once a player is tagged, he can still negotiate an extension with the team through July 15. In other words, the franchise tag can be used as a way to buy more time in negotiations.

Realistically, in Jerry's world it will get worse. We will let Osa walk, sign another 3 -1 year DT's that are 30+ and maybe draft 1, that will take time to develop.

The only thing we are fortunate about is a different coaching staff than the one who drafted Mazi. If he sucks he will likely be on the bench. Although he spent plenty of time out of the line up already.

I am still hoping we are active this free agency. I'm not optimistic about it though.

If you can justify using the tag on a less than great TE and a RB recovering from injury you can damn sure justify using it on Osa.

The tag sounds good. They should do that or let him walk. They for sure need to draft 2 dtackles and sign Nick Bolton in free agency.
I just think some fans fall into the same trap as the Joneses, believing we can replace players effectively with low-cost players and then depend on the draft. We are just not set up to effectively cycle out Osa, but I also don't believe we should commit to a high-dollar long-term deal for a 3-tech who is a little bit below the stud we need at the position.

Letting Pollard go, and bringing in Elliott. Letting Cooper go, and giving a long-term deal to Gallup coming off injury (which cost us less). Even letting Tyron go, and trying to replace him by starting a rookie. They all show the fallacy of that line of thinking. Get the replacement first, find out if he's an upgrade and then make a decision on letting players go. If you don't do that and you let a player go, then you need to get a clear upgrade in free agency, which this front office is not committed to doing.

I think $23 million is the franchise tag; $20 million is the transition tag
honestly I do not think he is worth either

I think Dallas can add a DT or two from the draft and spend the 20m/per season elsewhere. Osa is fools gold.
'Fool's gold,' we'll just see what is paid for his services and how much mileage are you going to get on the backs of two drafted 'rooks.' Get real with a new coaching staff now.

Sounds like real rocket science now...

Tyron was done. Should not have extended Martin as well.
