Because defensive tackles still need to pressure the QB
Very few guys that size put up big sack numbers. Very few.

Thats what made Poe a top 15 pick once upon a time. The potential was there at his size to be an effective pass rusherVery few guys that size put up big sack numbers. Very few.

That was Marinelli's philosophy. How did that work out for our Cowboys all the years he was here? It's not 1995. DTs have to be able to penetrate.
DT are supposed to take blocks to allow LBs and DEs to get free. Sacks for them are rare.
Didn't take long. DT's don't get a lot of sacks. It's not their job.Poe has had kind of a strange career trajectory. He showed alot of promise as an inside rusher early in his career and it propelled him to two Pro Bowl births. However, his last two years in KC he was used primarily as a traditional two gap NT and minimized him as a pass rusher.
After leaving KC, he had meager production as a rusher in Atlanta and in his first year in Carolina. However last season, he tallied 4 sacks in 402 snaps. Im not sure what his advanced stats look like, but thats very good production for a defensive tackle. Particularly a 1T/NT.
The question is, is that an anomaly. Or did Poe get back into a groove as a rusher
Pressure and collapse the pocketLinebacker dont rush unless its a blitz. In a 4 man rush, your defensive tackles are part of your pass rush, and need to generate pressure
If you remember, Dallas had DTs in the 90s that got to the QB quite often. If anything, it has been the trend in recent years for the DTs to containing the LOS instead of rushing the QB.It's not 1995. DTs have to be able to penetrate.

I can only dream about the impact that Leon Lett would have in today’s game. When he was in his prime, Leon was a beast. I mentioned Leon instead of Randy White because it would have been considered murder if White played today.Generally, you'd replace Poe on passing downs ... but it's good to have someone who can get to the passer when the opponent passes on rushing downs.
One of my problems with how we've put together our defense is that we've generally had players who are only good at one or the other. For example, Antwuan Woods is a strong run defender but fairly useless against the pass. Maliek Collins was fairly decent against the pass, but not very good against the run.

In a 4 man rush, you defensive tackles are pass rushers. Not space eaters

Hes a dt I'm more concerned with getting a push up the middle and stopping the run in his gaps. We hot beef now in the middlePoe has had kind of a strange career trajectory. Are you saying Marinelli was running a Tom Landry style of defense or something different? It was also Tom Landry's and his defenses did more than ok against the run. It isn't the gap it's the scheme in some places.
The only two gapper in a Landry defense was the MLB.
