“Shutdown” CBs mean far less in today’s NFL because of so much 3 and 4 wide. You can just avoid throwing at him and throw at the other 2. It’s why paying a 1 CB $18 million/year just doesn’t make sense and why we let Byron go.

Yah, Ok. Never heard that one before.

If there is any one position that is no longer as important its the RB position. And paying one 15 million is even more ridiculous. RB by committee is the way to go these days. Plus you can get RB's on the 2nd day no problem.

They let Jones walk because he simply wasn't worth the money. 1 pick in 5 years? LOL

Ramsey just got traded for two first round picks. Gurley they let go.

Doesn't follow your claim at all.

Would love to see a dominant defense for once...

Best draft for me would be something like this:

1. Kinlaw/Chaisson/Henderson
2. Lloyd Cushenburry Center LSU
3. Brandon Aiyuk WR Arizona State

I probably wouldn't go with a center, unless he happens to be BPA on their board. I'd look at secondary help if the value is there, even if we get Henderson in the 1st. I think we are fine at center with Looney, and hopefully McGovern steps up throughout the year to give is a solid option in case Looney leaves in free agency next year.

BPA WR? Why? It's not even a need, why would we go there?

I just don't get this way of thinking. Of all things, taking a WR in the 1st.

It really makes little sense based on the environment. We have two very good ones and just resigned our #1 guy. We need a slot guy, not a top 2 WR. Its a very very deep draft and we can get a very good receiver in the 3rd round.

Now would I pass on Ruggs for the 25th ranked guy? No, but I would definitely look at trade down scenarios in that instance. Taking Ruggs would be a last resort, have to situation.

I like Chaisson and his physical abilities are elite. What slows down my enthusiasm for him is that his college production doesn’t equal what his rare physical traits say he should have had. That always concerns me.

Still, the guy is super talented and I do like his mental makeup. He might be a great one, and I would be fine if that’s how Dallas goes, but I would be banging on the table for him if his production matched his skills.

"being fine" doesn't cut it when you are talking about the center position. I have it as the most important position on the line. And if you want a dominant run game, like we do with Zeke, you cant have a weak center. Looney is a backup. "being fine" would be ok if it were a couple of games. We are talking about THIS year and then the future as well.

Its makes the matter more pressing with Williams alongside him. I would much rather see McGovern beat out Williams at Guard and we draft a center in the 2nd round. Now you are talking about the continuation of dominance along the line well into the future.

he seems a little small to me. how was he against the run?

So true. Would anyone be that terribly upset, like remote throwing upset, if Dallas did take Ruggs at 17? Not only is he fast, but he is a skilled receiver. I would not hate it even over any defensive prospect the OP optioned.

As much as we need D, I am not throwing my remote if Rugg is the pick.

That, my friend, may be the very reason he falls. Not sure if he'd be there at 17, but I'd take him even over a WR, even though Ruggs is my guy. I will say this though, if Jeudy is there, forget about it. I like him better than Cedee for his route running alone. He'd be killer in the slot.

Chaisson actually played the run well. He didn’t shy away from the dirty jobs at all and by all accounts, he defends the run and rushes the QB with equal enthusiasm. That is part of what I was talking about when I said that I like his mental makeup.

I’d probably rather have Ruggs, but I really do like Chaisson a lot and of course, Dallas needs defenders.

As for his size, I think he’d be just fine at weak side DE in the new defense. I’m not sure exactly how Nolan and Tomsula will use him, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they use him in somewhat of an “elephant” position where he plays both with his hand in the dirt as well as standing.

Really, until we see some of the defense in action, we won’t know for sure. I imagine that if they picked Chaisson that they’d have something in mind specifically for his elite traits.

Chaisson over Ruggs but thats it. I could live with Henderson, as he is more highly thought of by others than me.

Id take Ruggs over Kinlaw just because of the knee

I do not understand the obsession with Chaisson - A guy that got 5 sacks in college football - yeah I heard all about the upside I hear that too often with Dallas and watch these guys never get good.

I rather have C.J. Henderson if we were so lucky to have him fall to us or Xavier McKinney if CJ isnt there. These are both day 1 plug in starters

another point on CJ is both (Awuzie & Lewis) Cowboys starting corners are free agents next year.

You are talking about a specialized position. Look at their 2018 stats w/o Fredrick. Even looking at the games, center was not an issue hardly at all with Looney. Looney is no Fredrick, I get that, but there is no reason to go center, when Looney is well capable, and McGovern has proven he can do it at Penn. Why go center when we could possibly go defense, which is where our resources should be wisely spent? I understand a center's importance, but this is not a position of need at the moment unless you feel we'll crap the bed unless we get one. I don't feel that way at all.

I'm drafting defense. You can get a solid WR3 in like the 4th or 5th round in this draft.

With the highest paid QB in the league and a 100 million dollar receiver, Im not taking a WR at 17. Those guys are going to have a find a way to get it done, cant toss every premium pick to the offense.

I wouldn't be mad at all if Dallas snagged Chaisson, Kinlaw, or one of the 3 WRs.

If you can't stop them, outscore them..right?

I admittedly don’t follow the team like I used to but I’ve been surprised how so many want a WR in the first when our defense seems so needful.

What is the reasoning? I must be missing something, particularly some we just signed Cooper for 2 years fully and have Gallup, are, pollard and so much invested in the offense. Are we writing off Austin and Smith? Or a reliable veteran/later pick?

CB, DE, S and DT seem in dire need not only this year but certainly next.

I dont think Looney cuts it at all. I dont like Looney. And you can get big time centers in the 2nd round.

Looney was a huge problem in the passing game. Sacks were 56 with Looney and 23 when a 70% frederic returned. Not all on Looney, but he just cant make the calls and help out Williams or hold it together.

I see Looney as a backup hard that can snap the ball. Much more to playing the center then that.

If you have players on your board ranked, I'm reaching here by the way, clear 1st rounders and then your 2nd round graded guys start at 18, would you not take the WR that you graded in the 1st? That is my argument and I'm sticking to it. No idea how they've ranked their board, but there are aspects in which rankings can override need.

I want a new slot receiver and one we'll have for years to come. Guessing they can get one late in the draft. After all we had perennial fan favourite Cole Beasley for years, wasn't he undrafted? This draft is stacked at WR. I'd put Center, Safety, defensive tackle, defensive end and cornerback as positions with more need than slot WR. Heck, even TE. We can probably run the over-rated Jarwin out of the slot if we have to. Or Zeke.

The center is basically another quarterback on the field. Hopefully with Moore, Dak, Looney, Martin, Smith and Williams all more familiar with each other, they can make the necessary adjustments if we have to start a back-up at C all season.
