Firstly, to the mods, if you'd like to move this to another place, feel free.

As many of you might remember from last year, I was high on a kicker I found from the Japanese X-League (an American Football League in Japan) who I felt should replace our then kicker Brett Maher. I am still quite high on that kicker and will mention him on this list. However, this list is also involving punters. We did not have much help from Chris Jones last year at the punter spot. Perhaps Mike McCarthy is willing to give him another chance. But, I think competition would be good for us. With that said, here are my top 3 kickers/punters in no particular order from the Japanese X-League. Have fun seeing these players. I hope you enjoy it. I will probably add a few more later, but for right now, these are my top 3.

1. Kenta Suzuki - Nojima Sagamihira Rise -

He was both the primary kicker and punter for the Nojima Rise last season. As you may see in the video, he's got a great leg. I think his punting is very similar to former Colts Punter Pat McAfee with how strong of a leg he's got. I also noticed that he angles his punts toward the corners which is very good. This would help us in field position. So, we'd have a chap who can punt for us. Also, he seems to have a good leg for field goals. Thus, he could handle that if something happens to Zurlein or Forbath. I'd also imagine he'd be good at kickoffs given his leg.

2. Takeru Yamasaki Elecom Kobe Finies -

You've probably seen the videos I posted last year of his field goal and kickoff abilities. Here are his punting highlights from last year. I really like this player. He's an excellent kicker and I think he's got very good skill at punting. His kickoffs are very good too. I'd be happy to post his field goal abilities again if requested, but I have a whole thread about this kicker from last year. I think he should also be a viable candidate to bring over to punt from Japan.

3. Toshiki Sato Kicker IBM Big Blue

An excellent kicker. He's considered in The Player's Choice Top 25 Players in the Japanese X-League (https://www.___GET_REAL_URL___/s/ww...s-poll-top-25-players-in-japans-x-league/amp/). He'd be good to bring in.

I am also trying to find out who the starting kicker/punters were for the Fujitsu Frontiers. They won the Japanese X-League Title last year.

As far as the punters go, I really like Suzuki. He's got a versatile array of punting styles. If you notice in the video, he lists the different styles of punts he uses. That was where Mat McBriar used to be so dangerous as a punter. His punting styles were a bit like a golf bag. He'd use a different style for the situation. Suzuki does the exact same thing. He's got a great control punt. He's got a boomer of a punt. I really like him as a prospect for punting. Same of course goes for Yamasaki as far as kicking and punting. Either would be excellent choices to bring in. Or, we could have fun and bring both over from Japan to try out and see who we like better.

Keep in mind, in Japan, baseball is a key sport. So, a lot of these games are played in baseball stadiums. So, you'll notice that quite a few of these kicks are done on baseball dirt. Yet, they're still rocketing kicks. Imagine what they'd do at AT&T Stadium.

Curious about the ethnicity suggestion? Careful now.

Wow I learned something today with this thread. I had no clue there was a league in Japan. Are the field dimensions/goalposts the same?

Yes, the dimensions and the goalposts are the same. I think they play under NCAA rules. Here's a video that may help:

Japan is surprisingly good at football.

I see. I was more trying to find better talent, and I was referring to players in that league (though, there are some Americans in that league, but it's mostly players from Japan).

How do you figure the Japanese represent better talent at kicking?

Only 2 kickers and 3 punters left that went undrafted. I would bring in lots for try outs..

As would I, and hey, this is the NFL. Gotta find the best talent where we can find it. Even if it's unconventional. Tom Landry did that when he brought in the Austrian football/soccer player Toni Fritsch who was an excellent player for Austria and became an excellent kicker for us. Effectively changed kicking in the NFL. I wonder if one of the kickers/punters I've found would do the same.

Sure would like to think that a franchise who has obtained some of its greatest players from places like Sonoma State, Fort Valley State and more would have someone watching overseas leagues.

Someone needs to ask McClay about that next time he's in front of a microphone.

Why wouldn’t it? Unless only good kickers come from America? It’s thinking outside the box.. not a guarantee someone would be found but it’s opening the pool of potentials.

He phrased it in a way that assumes Japanese have better kickers, when this isn't proven. I'm all for bringing in overseas talent to try out for the NFL, but the whole premise of this thread is beyond weird.

For one thing, a lot of them are kicking on baseball fields on the dirt as the video shows, and they're still putting them away from 50+ yards. Also, Toni Fritsch, who I don't believe went to any US university, was an unconventional choice for kicking by Tom Landry at the time. Yet, he ended up being the best option.

My opinion is that, compared to the punters left as UDFAs, I think some of these players in Japan actually stack up well in comparison to them. Some of these players were hammering long punts. Suzuki has a nice pallet of punting styles as his video shows. So, I think he would stack up well against the available college punters available.

Exactly! And it's about finding talent from wherever. The Japanese have produced excellent baseball pitchers who have helped change the game of baseball here. Likewise, I think Japan can produce talent for us if we're willing to think outside the box.

Agreed. Never know what you'll find overseas.
