Former Cowboy coaches not fairing well in job market

How many of you still believe Richard should be the HC?

I said that a year ago and clearly didn't predict the defense would fall apart - but neither did anyone else. Richard is regarded as one of the top secondary coaches in the game and a tremendous leader, he might actually be a better Head Coach than DC when he focuses on strategy instead of tactics.

The story will be told one day (and I don't know what it is) but clearly there was a lot of disfunction among the defensive coaches last year. Some of that has to be on Richard but some falls on Bloom and Garrett also.

Also the typical fan move is to laugh at the idea of Richard as a HC (even though a ton of reporters said the same thing prior to this season) but Richard already interviewed for HC job. You can argue part of that is the Rooney Rule and some of it is the Al Davis trick of interviewing opposing coaches to gather intel, but there are a million candidates who would meet the Rooney rule and they did interview Richard, so it isn't a laughable position to say Richard will be a HC one day. He is still only 40 years old.

It's cute how the last two remaining holdout Garrett homers can cuddle together and compare notes.
I think most agree that the Cowboy coaches were lacking, but the OP doesn't really suggest what it is purported to. Other head coaches that are fired or not extended don't walk immediately into another NFL head coaching gig, and really most don't go directly into being a coordinator. Same goes for other NFL coaching positions. There are only 32 NFL teams, and most don't have openings in a given season, so it's actually normal that a terminated coach wouldn't immediately get an equivalent job with another team.

I’d argue Garrett should receive some credit for developing Dak as well.

Sure , Dak had some raw talent and ability but I think most would agree we have seen some development along the way. Much like we saw even more last year with Moore.

It’s a measure of how crazy the hate is that you have to qualify that the former QB HC “should” get “some” credit for developing his QB.

I need to go back and find the video of Dak talking about Garrett and his role in Dak’s development that circulated (of course, it was never mentioned at all here, but who’s counting) when Garrett left. Dak made it clear how he felt about the guy.

Andy Reid went from fired in Philly, straight to the Chiefs, and on to a Super Bowl title. Mike McCarthy didn't take a coordinator job either. He stepped into another head coaching job after taking a year off.

The point is that it's bigger than just the head coach. Fact is that NOBODY ever went up the ladder after their time in Dallas under Garrett as the head coach. It was either a demotion or unemployment.

Exactly, its a dumb premise. On top of what you posted, coaches tend to work with each other so a DC is more likely to be hired again by someone he worked for in the past. Richard's Head Coaches have been Jason Garrett and Pete Carroll - and neither of those guys is doing any hiring right now.

Andy Reid had been a HC in the NFL for 14 years when that happened, he wasn't a DC. McCarthy had a Super Bowl ring, neither guy is a good analogy.

We disliked garrett as a HC. Maybe a qb position coach is his ceiling. As OC and HC he's trash

Why not? They're head coaches that went on to be -------- head coaches.

Maybe it's just that you don't like that they are examples of it happening?

Or maybe the thread is about position coaches and not anyone's Jason Garrett obsession.

The better argument is that they were actually below-average teams.
Even though just the year before they were many peoples' pick for the Superbowl... even though in 2011 that team started 7-4 before Garrett mismanaged two games including the Ice Ice Bailey fiasco.

Yep, I guess those were just 6-10 teams that good old Jason coached up.

Or maybe it's about ALL COACHES, including your obvious sore spot, the fired head coach.

If you're unsure, ask the OP of his intent. I'm clear on it.

That's the new excuse narrative, Garrett was handed a 'rebuilding project', one stocked with Pro Bowl talent, but somehow a 'rebuilding project'.

The lengths some people have to go to lie to themselves rather than admitting the truth...

The exception is not the rule though. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens less than 1% of the time.

As for McCarthy, note the year off part .. that isn't the case with Garrett. Plus, even after a year off it is far from the norm for a fired head coach to get another head coaching gig. Again, we can't pretend that the exceptions are the rule.

As for your last sentence, I don't disagree with that for the most part, although Eberflus actually did get springboard from Dallas to a better job, but that's outside the context of what I was discussing. And, to be clear, I was not saying that I expect Garrett to get another head coaching gig anytime soon, or even at all, I was just saying that the OP suggestion that not walking immediately into another equal job means something specifically about the Dallas coaches ignores the reality that it isn't normal for anyone to do that.

Oh it's not new...

But I also like the suggestion that the Garrett critics are just emotional and "fans" while the defenders are the voice of reason and rationality.

The year before they were 1-7 when he took over. Why go back to “peoples’” preseason picks when you already know what happened when the games started counting?

Go back and look at that 2011 roster and tell me honestly how many games that team ought to have won. Same for 2012.

More than they did.

History shows this team underperformed most years under Garrett. Why can't you just accept the reality that Jason Garrett just wasn't a really good coach? He was just adequate, average, mediocre. Not great, not terrible. Just blah.
