The Cowboys are only the third team in NFL history to leave their QB on franchise tag in Cap era.
No, he wanted Russell Wilson money.Dak wants to make Patrick Mahomes money but not bring the same skill set as him.
Dink who????? Mean old SJ didn’t budge. Hopefully he holds the line and any deal is team friendly or Dak is gone.Dallas Cowboys: Stephen Jones is ruthless and the real villain

That’s all great unless you don’t get your guy. And the team struggles as a result. But at least you can say they brought more to the bottomline. Without football success it just comes off cheap.Shrewdness
If you want cap flexibility then you don’t sign a running back two year before his deal is up. It’s funny...you keep talking about the pie getting smaller yet, they want Dak to sign a 5 year deal so they can restructure him. If the pie gets small create more pie. That’s what they do.Signing zeke was a good deal. Cap flexibility. Cooper needs to work under a new coach. I had no problems with dak negotiations. I said last year Stephen was sending a clear message to dak when he signed jaylon and la'el that the pie was getting smaller. I've made enough large business deals where certain sequences of events become obvious. Stephen wasn't going to budge. France just didn't get it.
You're welcome.
This with Dak and the July 15 deadline negotiations took place with the unknown of the pandimic/questionable salary cap. Zeke didn’t. Lawrence didn’t. Collins didn’t. Jaylon didn’t.I understand both sides as well. IF this was a isolated issue I wouldn't be concerned. But this isn't. If we take a step back and look at the moves this organization has made for the past 3 years.....they are inconsistent and show we don't have any form of plan AT ALL. No one is concerned now because they look at it as Dak was "playing hard ball". But there are some questionable moves taking place on this team and I hope for our sake it isn't Stephen.
Speculative opinions is what we do here. Along with the media.
I have no doubt whatsoever that Stephen has bungled the Dak negotiations. Not that it is solely his fault, but he's certainly a big reason in getting us to this point.
If anyone has doubts, just look at how the last three big-money deals were handled with Cooper, Elliott, and Lawrence:
On any other team, the contract negotiator would have lost his job, but when your last name is Jones and you have a job for life, you can bungle things as badly as possible, with zero consequences.
- Cooper was paid at the top of the receiver market because the team had no choice at that point after investing a 1st round pick in the guy without an extension worked out.
- Elliott was overpaid - and two years before he was due. Setting the top of the market for the running back position, that few, if any successful teams pay.
- Lawrence was tagged when defensive end contracts were reasonable and they exploded in the meantime with the Mack and Donald deals, and then Lawrence got his deal, for much more money than if they had just done it in the first place!
Except where's the successful result of his "shrewdness" ?Shrewdness
Cap isn't part of bottom line. That’s all great unless you don’t get your guy. And the team struggles as a result. But at least you can say they brought more to the bottomline. Without football success it just comes off cheap.
Stephen became the guy a few years ago. He had no authority 25 years ago. And he had to wait for Jerry to finally get rid of Garrett. Now we'll see what happens. The old guard has been changed.Except where's the successful result of his "shrewdness" ?
24 years without sniffing the Super Bowl. 24 years for one of the greatest franchises in all of sports.
Common denominator in that 24 years? The Jones'.
Good read on reality. Wish all debates here could be as logical. This with Dak and the July 15 deadline negotiations took place with the unknown of the pandimic/questionable salary cap. Zeke didn’t. Lawrence didn’t. Collins didn’t. Jaylon didn’t.
IMO, that changes everything because the team literally isn’t sure what the salary cap will be next year. Throw in that variable and a cumbersome negotiation quickly becomes way more difficult to wrap up. Dak’s deal was already in a whole different category because of the sheer size of the dollar figure. If you add Zeke’s contract to DLaw’s contract, you’d be in the area of what Prescott will get per year, so it was never going to be an easy deal to close... but the unknown of the salary cap going forward, greatly complicates things to the point of waiting until next year being the best way to go.
I’m not sure what questionable moves it is that you’re talking about, but you are a very reasonable poster on here so I’m probably just not getting what it is that you’re getting at.
Anyway, we’ll just have to wait and see how this all shakes out. I think they’ll pick up negotiations in the offseason and work out a LTD next spring. That doesn’t mean that I’m right, but I honestly think the team wants Dak long term and that he wants to be in Dallas long term. The franchise tag enabled both sides to wait until next offseason.
Thanks for the debate R.
