He is not even close to the highest paid backup. Taysom Hill with 8.8 million is probably technically the highest paid backup. Alex Smith coming back from injury could give him that job(but I think he could win the starting job). While the same can be said about Foles in Chicago whichever QB ends up the backup is making more than Dalton. The same can be said about Marcus Mariota who is making 7.5 million to be a backup next year. Lastly Case Keenum, AJ McCarron and Chase Daniel are also all making more than Dalton.

Also the problem with having a below stopgap guy is that he can be not good to really make the playoffs with or even compete for a playoff spot with, but just too good to get you into the top 5 of the draft where you can find your real QB. Basically I think the Cowboys this year are a 9-10 win team with Dak starting and probably a 6-7 win team with Dalton starting. That means no playoffs but also picking 11th or 12th too far gone to find the beset prospects (thus further lowering the probability of a hit).

Remember, the red menace is gone. I'm not worried about our offense with dak or Dalton. The only way I see is winning 9-10 games is if our D gets shredded.

Our offense was #1 this past season. Dak threw for just under 5,000 yards with 65% completions. So what does Dak have to do to be elevated in a top 5? 6,000 yards passing? Our losses vs the good teams were because Zeke was a no show.

BS. Can't blame it on Zeke anymore than on Dak.

It was because of coaching and the defense.

So in your example we:

a) Dak - 9-10, dont make play-offs (paid more CAP) and 15+ draft pick .....have a costly QB who doesnt get the offense working (or takes up so much CAP that there's nothing left to improve defense).
b) Dalton - 6-7, dont make the play-offs (saved $28m) and get a pick lower than 12th.

Depends on what MM wants really (Favre/Rogers situation).

We went 8-8 last year, it's not as if that having Dak (and now taking up a higher % of CAP) is a sure fire way to success.

I understand the Cowboys position, take what we can afford (long term)....or prove to MM that he can forego other weaknesses in exchange for having Dak.

Watson and Jackson will get prob 40 million neighborhood next year. And they aren’t as good as Mahomes.

Most likely we won’t get a full season in if we get one at all. So we won’t get a full look. And the Tag will be 38 million next year . And Daks contract demands will be more than this year .

We will have to pony up more than this years offer. Just watch and why if we aren’t sold now we probably won’t be next year .

It’s all so stupid and always plays out the same. Next year they’ll get a deal done. Media hype just like everything else.

I agree but can’t pay a top 15 qb like a top 3 qb and expect to have money to pay everyone else
Do you think Jerry and the Cowboys think Dak is only a top 15 QB?

Because what they believe is the only ones who matter.

I thought your argument on another thread was that Dak will cost more next year.

Well if you're predicting Watson Jackson getting 40m, dont you think France will be telling Dak the same thing?

Dak wants market value (as you say 40m) from next year AND short term so he can cash in from 2023/24.

The only way Prescott would demand anything close to Mahomes money is if....

Dallas wins the SB this year....and/or...a team GM leaks to France that they would be willing to pay that type of money for him, in which case they would continue to not sign long term and get to UFA after a second tag.

Now that I type this, I realize how much more complicated this gets if we win this year. Are we supposed to not want to? What a mess.

If we win Dak justifies the mega deal as we wont have multiple holes that needs CAP resources to fill and therefore the successful roster can tick over through the draft.

No one knows if this is a SB caliber team with Dak. I certainly have my doubts and it’s not just about the QB.

But what are we without him until we find another QB at least at his level?

My feeling is this team is built to contend now. We have a core of stars signed for about 4 years which doesn’t seem like an unworkable situation with Dak.

If it doesn’t work out then we move on in a few years. Unless you think we’re going to hit the jackpot in the draft next year or sign a big QB in FA who makes immediate impact.

And this is what we have to deal with.

We just went thru 9 years under Romo with nothing to show for it.

Now we have added 4 more years under Dak with little to show for it.

If Dak wins a SB, it will only be becuz Dak has surpassed Mahomes or the rest of the league has dropped back to Dak.

Which seems more likely?
So, Flacco and Eli were Mahomes level QBs? Your logic is severely flawed. The Super Bowl isn’t always won by the team with the NFLs best QB.

I worry players won’t want to come to Dallas. The glamor and glitz of being a Cowboy doesn’t pay the bills. Never really thought hey you will be famous and can make it in real estate after playing was good enough of a reason to play for peanuts. So then don’t sign anyone to a 2nd contract just cheap out and draft. The new cba all it did was bump up the minimum salary. Maybe do one of those reality tv shows and get some dude off the street to hand off to zeke.

Haha funny.

The front office are trying to put together the strongest roster within reason. They aren't being tight. The Chargers just spunked their junk on Joey Bosa. Very good player but that's them effectively finished as contenders for the next 5 years especially in that division.

That Lambo was nice. Had an engine and could cruise. Too bad the brakes (D) kind of sucked and couldn't get any takeaways and the wheels (Special Teams) kept putting the car in crap positions.
Could have been a better Lambo.
I see what you are doing here and I'm not buying it. I'm talking about his success as QB and offense.
I didn't say ANYTHING about the team win loss record. But you went RIGHT there....swiftly!
methinks thou dost protest too much

Wonder how they explain Stafford being highest paid QB in 2017 or Ryan in 2018. Neither were best in the league?

Btw let's keep in mind that "Mahomes money" included a whopping 10m signing bonus. Cash up front is king.

10/503 looks impressive, but it's hardly that.

Jerry will eventually make this work, so I dont the the real point in debating it as extensively as we do.
