Here is another way of what I trying to say:

If one character's line or lines of dialogue cannot be recited with emphasis without including another character's dialogue for context, it is not a movie quote but part of a movie conversation.

How about, if you can't recite the line at work without someone getting bored or interrupting, it's not a quote for the tournament?

"You can't handle the truth!" is a great line, and so is the whole spiel that follows, but who's gonna listen to the rest?

Two sentences, maximum, IMO.

Rhetorical questions.

Is Michael Caine's short quotation beyond someone's ability to remember and recite at will?

Would someone automatically gauge such dialogue as boring? Would that someone also lack the patience to hear such a short oration?

Caine's comment has been one of many highlights for me each and every time I have rewatched The Dark Knight. Just never considered it too cerebral or bland.

I gotta say. An Elvis Presley songs tournament is starting to grow on me all of a sudden.

If you need all the other dialogue or conversation, it's not one of the 32 greatest movie quotes
Totally agree about conversation. Can you elaborate for me what you consider is "all the other dialogue?"

for example "Cool Hand Luke"

The Warden's little speech is very quotable
"What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week. Which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. And I don't like it any more than you men."

All you really need is that first sentence, it doesn't require the rest ....

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. The rest of Duvall's dialogue is great, but it's that one sentence that nails it.

A truly great movie quote is usually one maybe two lines and usually something people can apply in their everyday life. The ***** hits the fan at work, you turn to your co-worker and say "Houston, we have a problem" At that point, he knows whatever just happened is bad.
So many great, iconic quotes, it's gonna be tough to moderate so may the force be with you.........

You realize, "Houston, we have a problem." isn't a movie quote, right?
