Jaylon Smith thread *merged*

I thought it was a mixed bag for him. For every one play like the pass breakup to Hurst at the beginning of the game, you get a play where he bites on the fake screen and fails to carry Hurst down the seam when he scored the long touchdown.

He’s not consistently terrible — just erratic. He’s not doing himself any favors with his demonstrative celebrations either. It seems like every big play he celebrates is sandwiched between two plays where he blew assignments.

The biggest question: When can we cut him w/o doing too much damage to the salary cap.

How do yall know hes playing so bad? Wjen did we get so many scouts on here? What particular plays were egregious?

Afraid we are stuck with Jaylon for a while. Besides being thin at the position, Jerry prefers jersey sales and feel good stories to championships these days.

His instincts to me is so-so. He really can't cover in space. Can't shed well. Open field tackles he can whiff on unless he can come in with a full head of steam from the side.

That’s like a backhanded compliment.

Everything you named there are critical traits of being a good linebacker.

He has zero change of direction. Just have him bull rush the center on every play.

..what can you say, he needs help around him. Dude has no instincts.

We dig on so many players here, lol. The Falcons averaged 3.3 yards a carry and the TEs and RBs didn't kill us receiving so not all can be wrong with Jaylon's play after making 13 tackles.

Does anyone here still think he is a quality LB? Is his issue mental or physical? Do you think he looks prepared at all? Do you think his contract and life outside of football changed his career trajectory? Last question, is he salvageable? All serious questions.

Some of Jaylon's problem is clearly physical. Physically regressed starting the beginning of last year. At first it was just a slightly uneven gait. His running got more and more labored, and his ability to stack evaporated. Got totally stoned by the lightest bag in a *cumulative* 3 bag push at the Pro Bowl. Just couldn't plant and drive on one foot.

I had hoped he'd get better from whatever it was in the offseason. He got talked up in camp, but looked awful last week, and had some worse looks this week.

He's *physically* not right. Even if he were mentally on top of everything, which he's not, he'd still be a liablity.

If everyone were healthy, and we were playing our best players, Jaylon would not start, maybe not play.

Some people will never learn. Number of tackles is like number of RBIs in baseball. Has almost no meaning when it comes to evaluating a player's performance.

Jaylon was not terrible today. He was at best uneven but his play surely doesn't warrant a call out. If anything Joe Thomas should be getting applauded he made some good plays today.

It doesn't but 13 tackles are 13 tackles. To me the issue today was the corners and the pass rush. I'm not sure how Jaylen is getting blamed for that performance today.
