Here are some hypothetical extremes so-called realists should consider.

A fan can scream their throats raw and smash every breakable item in their home rooting for a win and their favorite team could still lose the game.

A fan can yell like a banshee and bang on pots-and-pans like a maniac rooting for a loss and their favorite team could still win the game.

What does any of this mean?

In this instance, a fan can root with all their might and the team may lose both remaining games. Likewise, a fan can root with all their might hoping the team will lose in order to pick up a high draft slot, only to watch them win both games. Neither effort will affect the games' outcomes in either case. Players and coaches are 100% responsible for what happens on the field. Fans? Be real.

So. Again. Sports is competition. Fans usually root for their favorite team to beat their opponent. Why does hypothetical draft seeding change any fans' reasoning for how they root for their favorite team? "Anti-rooting" runs counter to the nature of sports spectatorship. And all the anti-rooting means nothing in reality. In some folks' fantasies? Yes. In the real world? Nope. Doesn't do a thing except makes fellow fans roll their eyes wondering what the deal is for rooting against their mutually appreciated favorite team.

Great perspective!

Just curious. With a loss we are one step closer to a top 5 pick. With a win, we will move out of the 8-9 pick, and into the 12-14 range, and possibly miss out on Nixon and the top CB. We really need the best DT and CB we can get.

What are you thinking if the other team has a 30 yard FG to win the game? In the game we recovered 3 unforced fumbles( luck ) and our D got run all over. They are not playoff caliber. They can’t run the ball or stop the run.

Will you be rooting for the 5th pick in the draft or the 12-14? Remember the best DT and best CB will be gone at picks 12-14!
This season has been a roller coaster on perspective and fan philosophy. I've enjoy the back and forth on the topic. Each results has its own satisfaction. Mainly I've decided it's a changing world of course and if FO's can make tanking decisions I feel like I'm free to do the same. During the draft I'll enjoy the extra pick if we can find a player.

Contradictory. Since none of it matters as you point out, then it simply doesn't matter. The tankers are rolling their eyes that others want to win meaningless games. Really, it's not that hard to see and understand both sides.

I’d rather win every game too! but in certain circumstances losing games can help you build a winner in the near future.
I get it, too. Obviously the 4th pick would be better than the 13th pick. And when I'm watching the draft I'll probably wish we had a higher pick. But, give me the wins now every time. That's just me. I don't hate on anyone who wants it another way. I'm more interested in winning right now.

Give it up man, even if this team lost and ended up with the 4th or 5th pick we are missing the most important piece of the puzzle which is a competent GM who knows how to build a winner. Instead we have a geriatric moron whose knowledge of football wouldn't fill the skull of a fruit fly.

True so wouldnt it make Jerry's picking job easier if we had a top 5 pick? Harder to screw that up.

There is no benefit at all to winning meaningless games. Please explain the benefit.

So you are more interested in winning a meaningless game that hurts our draft position? Why? So you can wave your pom poms? I think that is the most self centered, pathetic thing to root for.

Bottom line is you are rooting for the 18th pick over the 4th pick. Its not like this is some young team that needs to learn how to win. 1/3 of these chumps are gone after the season and Dalton and Zeke dont need to learn anything.

When our team begins intentionally tanking games then I’ll root for losing. And probably turn the TV off.

It is doubtful anyone holding any position on the topic does not understand all points-of-view. However, there is a clear disconnect though.

Games can be labeled meaningful or meaningless by fans. Either label does not dictate who influences the outcome of the games, which are teams and not fans.

One thing is certain. Some fans have made it crystal clear that their favorite team winning games means something to them until something of importance to them takes precedence. That item of importance is a higher draft position. Of course, the only party with any influence in acquiring the higher draft position is the team and not the fans wanting that specific circumstance to happen.

Essentially, some fans are placing themselves in the shoes of the general manager, coaches and players. It is a nonsensical act for self-validating "what must be done in the best interest of the franchise." Actually, it is simply an opinion that others, who know they do not influence wins or losses, would not be as concerned about IF not for the continual suggestions that 'everyone else' should root for losses.

Thus, one group of fans continue doing what they have always done. They root for their team to win games, knowing wins, losses, ultimate draft position and actual player acquisitions are outside their control. Why? Because the circumstances for supporting their team winning games has not changed in reality. On the other hand, another group of fans believe hoping for losses, resulting in higher draft position by consequence, has some undefinable yet real direct contributory meaning useful to the franchise in regards to next April's draft. None of the former is based in fact of course.

Is that contradictory? Perhaps. One group of fans will simply root for wins like always because that is the nature of spectator sports. Another group of fans will root for losses as if doing so makes any difference in the present or next April.

Some fans simply want to root for their team. That is how they choose to enjoy their fanhood. No one should have a problem w/ either side of this coin, and I don't understand why some get so inflammatory and insulting because someone exercises their fanhood in their chosen way.

The Dallas Cowboys certainly understand the value of having higher draft picks.

Why are they still trying to win games if they are meaningless?

Once they stop trying to win games then I’ll join them in rooting to lose.

There's no reason to insult just because you don't choose to exercise your fanhood in that way.

"A nonsensical act for self validating". Sad. You could say that about both sides, but it's really silly to say it about either side. Shows a lack of empathy. Neither side has anything to do w/ fact. It's simply rooting for your team in the fashion that best suits you.

Bolded: Neither side makes any difference. That is what is nonsensical.

No one has said that. Respectfully, are you paying attention.
But in essence you basically are saying that.

I’m on board when I see our franchise intentionally playing to lose to heighten their draft position.

And there will be no reason to watch.

Then why didn't you quit when Jimmy traded Herschel and then didn't play better players for draft picks?

Surely everyone sees the benefit of higher draft slot from losing. It’s a no brainer. But it’s still not a strategy teams take to lose. .

Any thoughts on why these teams still play so hard to win these “meaningless“ games?

What is best for our team is to crush our enemies and hear the lamentations of their girly men fans, especially those of the WFT

As I've said many many times in these discussions: TANKING IS NOT ON THE PLAYERS/COACHES. IT IS ON THE GM/OWNER. And tanking in the NFL is done by trading away talent, keeping players on IR who could play, benching vets and playing youngsters.

You will never get this until you take off the blinders and realize how teams tank. It's not by not playing hard. Teams would get fined draft picks if they tanked that way.

We were still trying to win games while we didn’t have much of a shot. Somehow after 0-11 we still upset the Skins.

Trading Herschel was a planned strategical trade. And he didn’t play those players because it would have cost them higher draft picks for compensation.

All a completely different situation and scenario.

I totally get it. Example : Miami last year .

And I’d be on board like I was with Jimmy if I felt we weren’t trying to win this year. But we haven’t made those type moves .
