Did Rap Kill Off Soul Train, American Bandstand & MTV?

Growing up as a kid 80s they had dance shows on TV Soul Train & American Bandstand,and kids loved watching music videos on MTV also Club MTV even late night there was Night Tracks,but something happened about Mid 90s. Most shows which had been around for decades vanished. What happened? I believe Rap/ Hip Hop killed it off. Instead of sexy women dancing we got trashy Ho's grinding or twerking. Good dancing guys to morons wearing shades in a dark night club and wearing their hats on backwards like they were 10 years old acting like bada$$es....What happened to this. MTV has never been the same without music videos. Why watch MTV to watch 90s retread movies and a billionth episode of Ridiculousness.

So my question,WHAT HAPPENED?
 
Yes, IMO, it played a part in changing things. But let's not forget hardcore metal was seen as devil worshipping at about the same time. So pop culture took a turn for the worst, because the songs these youngsters wanted to dance to weren't playable on the airwaves. As of right now today, if you aren't cursing in your music or talking about sex then your going to struggle to stay popular for an extended period of time. Even Ariana Grande is cursing in her music now. And things definitely took a turn to the worst when women started buying into that grimy culture. When calling a woman a "B" is a complement, you know things are going down hill.
 
The music industry like the rest of the other entertainment including sport is not about the art itself or even the money .
 
Rap had nothing to do with those things declining. If anything, rap helped MTV bring in a younger audience as it transitioned away from full time music video channel to an entertainment-based TV show channel.

Soul Train and American Bandstand declined in popularity because of a generational decline of interest in dancing among younger people.
 
Based on the reference to American Bandstand I can now understand better the basis of this ridiculous thread and take solace knowing most of your demographic will likely be gone before rap goes away.

What exactly do you mean by this?
Why did you mention American Bandstand and not reference Soul Train as well?
I believe most if not all music genres of music will survive after most of your demographic goes away.

That's my generation can assure we had musical talent,not having to cuss and pretend like we so cool by mumbling incoherent jibberish. Truthfully you guys got the baggy clothes all you need is red noses and big floppy shoes and you are ready to join Ringling Brothers.... Non talented hacks and I have noticed younger generations wanting to listen to older music versus watching Lady Gaga eat a toy baby in concert or watching a Mumblethon and street rats twerking. A club where I am from was a 80s club. I got all excited thinking my generation and it was filled with college kids they don't even want to listen to crap from their own generation ..
 
The model of AB and Soul Train just ran out of steam. When AB formed, it was a different time with Bobby Soxers, Jitter Buggers and kids were learning the new dances watching AB and what really impacted them more than Rap was Disco and the aftermath when dancing shifted from being a contemporary thing to a Country thing. The Cotton Eye Joe and line dancing became the thing and Urban Cowboy showed the way and they're still doing that. I can tell you from operating a Country station in OK and working with several Country nightclubs, not every OK cowboy can ride a horse but he can sure as hell dance.

I am surprised a Country version didn't spring up to replace AB and Soul Train but the audiences for both of those either grew up and grew out of it or just lost interest because that wasn't the thang anymore.

If we're waiting for Rap to die, we've got quite a wait because it just keeps evolving and they refuse to let it die. It has proven itself to be immune to the musical whims of labels and the fans will not be led anywhere like contemporary fans have allowed themselves to be manipulated.

I am not a Rap fan but I'd listen to 8 hours of Rap before I'd do 30 minutes of Pop music. That crap is noise pollution.

I mentioned American Bandstand because 1) it was referenced in the OP; and 2) American Bandstand ran from 1952 to 1989, so it’s clear the person that referenced it is from an older demographic....same with Soul Train to a lesser extent.

I’ve also been hearing rap/hip-hop was just a fad that was going to go away for the past 35-40 years.

Where does one even begin with this cartoonish take? Sounds like you're mad and getting older while the world around you changes and becomes less familiar.

I did like your attempt to distinguish the "sexy" women of Soul Train from the "ho's grinding and twerking." That takes some real nuance.

Pretty much agree with all of this. But if I have to listen to rap please make it old school 80s rap.
I rarely listen to any kind of mainstream music no matter what the genre. If I listed my top ten favorite bands most here wouldn't have ever heard of any of them.

MTV never made much money showing music videos, then the Reality TV fad started in 90's and they found they made more money from those Reality TV shows. They reduced the music videos shown for more Reality programming until the internet killed the need for music videos on TV altogether.

You sound miserable because Deep down Rap takes little talent and you know it . You are miserable because your generation is less than others. Makes you envious which makes you jealous wanting to be respected as musicians.. No talent,no class,just trashy no sense of what class is your generation. Yeah your generation that is offended by Mr. Potatohead.. There is nothing lasting with your music. It's a video of some stupid dance any fool could learn in 30 seconds.... Yes sexy ladies from Soul Train not cartoonish butts of skanks from you're generation. Morons trying so hard to be cool. Who gives a flip... Where is the golden voices like Smokey Robinson?



Smokey was cool and didn't have to act like some douchebag saying he gets all the ladies with shades on in a dark nightclub.
