All of the Chicken Littles hear at CZ - give a prediction on what year there will no longer be see the NFL on network TV.

My prediction is that the networks will be gulped up by Big Tech (Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook) within the next 5-10 years.

Will you please explain what you mean about the NFL not adapting to streaming? I'd seriously like to understand your thoughts on this topic. Thanks in advance.

One of the biggest draws to streaming is the plethora of content for a low price. What is NFL Sunday ticket priced at now? Still close to $300? I'm pretty sure the best deals you can get on that is packaged deals so you actually get a contract with them so you can pay around $24 a month. The only other option I remember seeing is SlingTV which priced games at around $60 and NFL Game Pass is currently $50.

Some of those prices might seem good to hardcore football fans, but to the casual watchers it's going to be a harder and harder sell. The NFL is no longer just competing with just daytime/night time talk shows, they're competing with a plethora of easily accessed entertainment within multiple mediums. I haven't looked at the Amazon deal or what it will be bringing, but I doubt it will be cheap.

But isn't the cheapest deal just watching the game on a Sunday afternoon, inside your own home on network TV? Or am I missing something? And, if people stop watching the NFL for a variety of reasons, will streaming really help bring viewership back? Sure, the NFL will be rich in year one, but if viewership continues to drop, how long will Disney pay huge fees? This problem is between the NFL and a portion of the fans, some of whom are gone and will never return, period. ASKING for a friend.

Thanks for the response.
I still think the League will keep the broadcast networks in play because of the advertising revenue, and the audiences still watching at home.

They lost substantially more due to the pandemic than people angry at social issues undertaken by the league.

And they’ll eventually come back. This is like when people freaked out at Nike in mid 2018 when they signed Kaepernick. People swore off Nike and claimed it would hurt business but eventually people went back to Nike and their revenue went up the next year and their stock is up over the period from 2018 until now.

In other words, grandstanding drama queening with a side of cancel culture that now is wrong all of a sudden. LOL.

So the cap should be closer to 150 million this year if they wanted to get it all back at once? They're still going to take it back in future years I guess.

Essentially, yes, which is why I tried to explain that there would be little, if any get well plan on Dak's contract under a 4 year deal.

Sure you have local channels that are free, but you still have to be a fan of the teams that are playing. I don't exactly want to watch the Jags every weekend, would you? And game of the week aren't always a draw either.

As for if a cheap streaming service would bring them back, on of the biggest reasons NFL is losing fans is due to cord cutting. I mentioned in my other post that the NFL isn't exactly drawing in Gen Z and they probably never will in large numbers, however Gen Z knows tech and grew up around it, NFL needs to be a true competitor to online entertainment. Right now, they are not.

I don't think the NFL will stay a juggernaut, I think sports in general will lose a lot of popularity. Spectating isn't as fun as doing, why watch a game other men are playing when you can just turn on your PC and partake in a video game?

The NFL was having problems before the pandemic, the pandemic just accelerated the problem.

Also losing viewership across the board can't be explained away by people being cooped up in their houses. Simple fact is, the NFL should have had a way to capitalize on the fact that people had more time at home than ever before, multiple other streaming sites had a major boost in viewership - this excuse for the NFL is pure BS.

I'm just wondering how and when do they intend to take it back? 30 million is considerable.

I know a lot of family and friends who are done with the NFL. So you can't tell me that isn't widespread. That business isn't coming back. They'll get new contracts with the TV networks but that comes with expectations of viewership being up. They will be disappointed to find out that the expected viewership won't all be there and isn't coming back.
