Different Perspective: Good Moves

Jettisoning bad contracts is a good thing. Despite some idiots claims Cooper was a very good player and a winner but too expensive. And to be blunt it seems clear Dak had no chemistry with him.
Noting you can do about that. Collins just seemed to have gone off the track and was too expensive for what we were getting.
Very GLAD to see Gregory gone; he was a tease and nothing more and way too many downsides.
My REAL problem is that you know very well Stephan will refuse to go after any real top FA. Bottom line is that you need some top FA's if you are going to win it all. Dumpster diving and the Draft will not win a SB. Look at the last ten SB winners and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM had at least one TOP PRICE FA. Most had more than that.

Seriously, did anyone think the team as is was going anywhere? No. We were not. We desperately needed to cut salaries and start over in several areas. The guys we cut and let walk? Good moves, every one of them.

Why? Because that's the only way we were going to get better. If you focus on the big pic, job well done. You must at times get worse before you can get better.

Soooo, is this the first step toward building something good? I have no idea. However, at least we're on the right track.
You have no idea if it's going to work out, but you say we're on the right track. Well I'm on the highway with no idea where I'm going... is it going to work out for me?

Since I don't see us as contenders, I'm OK w/ only signing short term FA's this season, or decent players on cheaper contracts. I don't believe even if we spent high dollars on 2-3 really good players that it would make the difference this year. Might be better focusing on next offseason.

Even if you do agree with the moves so far this offseason they will most certainly screw everything up by taking a WR in the first round. It's almost a guarantee at this point.
Unfortunately, it would not shock me at all.

I'd like to see some good draft picks w/ promise, a continuation of letting huge salaries walk next offseason, and only signing cheaper FA's or short term deals.

It's not about this upcoming season, it's about clearing out the chaffe and getting some real players in here.

It might actually open up an opportunity to go all in in Dak's last year or two. We can have most terrible contracts out of here by then and quite a few of our young stars like Parsons, Diggs, and Lamb will need paid. We might actually be in position to go absolutely all out for Dak's last season and our probable entrance into QB hell. We will likely have a huge amount of cap space available at that point as the old, bad contracts should nearly all be off the books.

Yes sir, have to churn that roster and move on from players that will end up being overpaid due to the dynamics of the FA market. I would start a plan today of getting away from top WRs and moving toward a more physical, ball control passing game with a heavy lean on the running game. NFL defenses, overall, are not built for that right now and Adams just brought the WR market into what was the QB orbit not long ago.

The Cowboys have failed miserably with their insistence on signing their own to big contracts. They draft well, so they should feel secure in that area. They have to rotate players off the roster and fill holes with veteran FAs who can step in and compete for a year or two.

Will our fans accept that we are very close to calling this "rebuilding?" I am fine with it because we've done nothing anyway. I know there are those that point to our numbers of wins last year but we really didn't beat anyone. Do we give the Jones boys this much credit for realizing this team wasn't going anywhere? Well no, but Jerry will find the light switch in the dark every now and then...

Then why sign any of these short term deals? if we only want to get better in the future then take the cap savings now, let it roll over to next year and while doing this we probably lose more games raising our draft picks next year.

The Cowboys currently have less talent than they did when the season ended.

“cutting the fat” is a stupid catch phrase with no meaning

If they improve the team, you can give them a pat on the back then.

Unless they end up better in 2023.

Rolling it over is even a better idea.

No idea. And no idea.

The moves make sense, but only w/ a long term plan in place. Are we doing that? No idea. Maybe McC and Quinn are getting their input?

You can say it was good to get rid of Cooper, Collins, Cedric and so on.

You can even argue that it was good to get rid of Randy.

However it was not the plan to get rid of randy and real or not that whole situation is egg on Stephen Jones face right now.

Hey, maybe it was like w/ Frederick and Martin and Parsons, maybe they're falling into the right moves by stupid luck!!! That is highly possible, no doubt.

You're living in the cap past, not the cap future, and unfortunately, so are the Cowboys.
The cap is set to EXPLODE in the coming years.
Some are predicting it could be as high as 248 just next season, and a 300 mil cap is right around the corner.
The cap has been stuck in this "Covid freeze" and it's now going to come out.
20 mil for Coop is never going to be regarded as cheap, but a 20 mil WR on a 300 cap is a lot less % wise than on a 200 cap.
We are already seeing WR salaries increase. Kirk and Williams both signed for close to Coops number, and wait until you see what Adams gets. In the next few years top WR will be getting well over 20. Godwin just got 20.
Coop is costing us 6 mil in cap space this year, and he's playing for the Browns.
You could have easily restructured him and cut his number to close to that this year. (Remember Gallups 5/62.5 deal is costing just 4.5 THIS season).
Yes, the contracts increase in the future, but with an expanding cap it becomes much more managable.
Coop is in his prime, a top 10-12 receiver in the league. He was signed for 3 more years, and we let him go for next to nothing.
That is just not good asset management.
Even if you decide you want to move on in the future from him, you make it work, drive up his value and trade him for a real asset.
My guess is, after seeing Kirks, Williams and Godwins deal, Coops value has increased. He'd likely get 20-22 mil on the market if he were a FA right now, and Adams is about to reset the market.
And now we have a hole at WR, which we will need to fill either with a premium pick or with a FA.
It's like selling your home because you were afraid of the mortgage payment, but now the value has increased, and we need to go rent something and rents have gone way up. We lost the asset.
Poor management.
