Naomi Vs. Ms. Marvel: Which Young Heroine was Better?
By Ray Clough | MovieWeb
August 1, 2022

Ms-Marvel.jpg

This year, DC & Marvel looked to a new generation, opting to put their first impressions on young teenage girls. Naomi McDuffie & Kamala Khan would each go on journeys of self-discovery as they attained new abilities and strengthened friendships along the way. Both women would face family issues and go head-to-head with powerful enemies while solving mysteries that originated before their time.

Naomi would only last one 13-episode season before being canceled shortly before the CW was bought out, but in its time, it would prove to be an excellent addition to the CW's superhero lineup. Ms. Marvel would have a six-episode limited series run. Still, there are already confirmed plans for Iman Vellani to reprise her role in the MCU film The Marvels (2023). We will examine different factors to analyze which of these two young women is better. Still, audiences can be sure that they'll enjoy both series and the adventures of powerful young women, leading into the next generation of heroes.

Darth Vader Faces Off Against a Queen Xenomorph in Alien Crossover Art
BY TC Phillips | Screen Rant
August 1, 2022

Darth-Vader-v-Queen-Xenomorph-Alien-Art.jpg

A new piece of crossover fan art imagines Star Wars’ Darth Vader coming face-to-face with a Queen Xenomorph from the Alien franchise. Undoubtedly one of the most recognizable cinematic villains of all time, Darth Vader made his cinematic debut in 1977’s original Star Wars film voiced by James Earl Jones. Once a Jedi Knight known as Anakin Skywalker, his tragic fall to the Dark Side of the Force and transformation into a terrifying Sith Lord has been a central focus for much of Star Wars' ongoing lore. Most recently, Vader would return to screen in the live-action Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, set between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope.

Meanwhile, the Xenomorphs or Aliens are a hostile breed of extra-terrestrial lifeforms which appear in the Alien movies. The frightening creatures are known for their predatory behaviour and violent means of propagating their species. Parasitic creatures, which are known as Facehuggers, implant a larval form of the Xenomorph inside a host body, which in turn bursts out of the host’s chest. Designed by renowned artist H. R. Giger, the Xenomorphs first made their debut in Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie Alien. However, it was not until the sequel Aliens, directed by James Cameron, that audiences were introduced to a Queen Xenomorph, a colony’s single fertile female responsible for laying the eggs from which the Facehuggers originate. Presently, a new Alien TV series is currently being planned, led by Fargo’s Noah Hawley.

I hate to say it, but unless she's immune to his telekinesis, she doesn't stand a chance.

Exclusive: Jon Bernthal Punisher Show Rating And Episode Count Revealed
By Nathan Kamal | Published 4 hours ago

jon-bernthal-punisher-900x506.jpg

Back in the days when Marvel characters freely roamed Netflix, Jon Bernthal’s introduction as the Punisher was both a highlight and a kind of thrown gauntlet. There is no way to really feature Frank Castle and his bloody, grim mission for revenge against the criminal world without a pretty high body count, and the Netflix show proved it. Our recent report that Jon Bernthal would be reprising his version of the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was already exciting enough, but there is more. According to our trusted and proven sources, Jon Bernthal’s new Punisher series will have a whopping eighteen episodes and will be rated TV-MA.

He's the perfect casting for the role and if they went with someone else after he showed what he did in the Netflix Punisher series, they'd be crazy.

‘Batgirl’ and ‘Scoob!: Holiday Haunt’ Scrapped at Warner Bros. Amid Cost-Savings Push
By Aaron Couch | The Hollywood Reporter
August 2, 2022

Leslie-Grace-Suicide-Squad-Carpet-GettyImages-1332050408-H-2022.jpg

In a surprising development, Warner Bros. will no longer be releasing Batgirl, the DC film that already completed shooting and was expected to arrive on HBO Max this year. The unusual move comes after a change in leadership at Warners, with newly installed Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav prioritizing cost-cutting measures and refocusing Warners on creating theatrical films rather than projects for streaming, as had been a priority for former WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar.

Batgirl was budgeted at around $80 million, with costs rising to nearly $90 million due to <censored> protocols. It’s a hefty sum, but significantly lower than DC theatrical releases, thus the film is said not to have the spectacle that audiences have come to expect from DC fare. (The Batman, released in March, had a budget of $185 million, before marketing costs.) Warners has also decided to shelve animated feature Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, which had a budget in the $40 million range.

Batgirl stars In the Heights breakout Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl — the first Latina to play the role — and hails from Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Its cast also includes Michael Keaton, back as Batman, J.K. Simmons as Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon, and Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly. The New York Post first reported Batgirl would be scrapped.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever': Talocan Explained
By Usama Masood | Collider
August 2, 2022

Black-Panther-Wakanda-Forever-Talocan-Explainer-feature.jpg

Black Panther 2 is gearing up to be one of the most exciting entries in the MCU in some time. Titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the film reckons with the state of the fictional country of Wakanda after the tragic passing of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). As most fans are aware, Boseman’s battle with colon cancer led to the actor passing away in August 2020. The sequel thus incorporates the real-life tragedy into the film, picking up after King T’Challa’s death and leaving Wakanda vulnerable and open to attack from outsiders. Enter Atlantis, or rather Talocan.

Based on the mythical Aztec paradise Tlālōcān, the film has decided to change the new MCU character Namor’s (Tenoch Huerta) comic book lore from him being the Prince of Atlantis to the ruler of Talocan. Tlālōcān is said to be a place where those who die from lightning or drowning rest in paradise. Tlālōc, the rain deity, governs the Palace. It will be interesting to see how Marvel incorporates Aztec lore into the MCU.

That’s huge news in my opinion. And yet another example of Warner Bros not knowing what they’re doing with the DCEU.

$130 million down the drain.

It’s also notable to me that the same directors responsible for what’s described as an “irredeemable” Batgirl film also directed the Ms Marvel series. I admit to be having a really hard time just getting through that series. It feels like work rather than being enjoyable.

It looks like they chose the wrong people.

I’m apprehensive about this big change to the Namor/Atlantis origins but I’m trying to give Marvel the benefit of the doubt based on past history.

James Gunn Admits New Marvel Hero Was Supposed To Debut In The MCU Sooner
By Douglas Helm | Giant Freakin Robot
August 2, 2022

james-gunn-the-suicide-squad-scaled-e1643402053507-900x506.jpg

San Diego Comic-Con always has plenty of exciting reveals to look forward to each year and this year Marvel didn’t disappoint. We got massive announcements in the form of future projects for Marvel’s Phase 5 and Phase 6. We also got small tidbits of information outside of the MCU event, like the fact that Adam Warlock was actually supposed to show up in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 first. MTV News caught up with James Gunn for a quick interview at Comic-Con and Gunn revealed this little trivia fact.

Apparently, Adam Warlock was going to be a character in the second entry to the trilogy, but James Gunn couldn’t find the space to fit him in. This makes sense, as there was quite a lot going on in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It makes sense that Warlock was needing to be more of a prominent character in his introduction. Of course, there have been teases of Adam Warlock up to this point. In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, it looked like his cocoon was in the Collector’s base in the first movie. We also saw his birth pod officially revealed at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with Ayesha the Sovereign creating him to defeat the Guardians.

In hindsight, I am happy Adam Warlock was delayed. The comics book nerd in me remembers the character being a major factor in the Infinity War storyline. He was not a major factor in the prior Infinity Gauntlet saga, which MCU Phases 1 through 3 are (very) loosely based upon.

I’ll admit to:
  1. Not knowing a whole lot about the character
  2. Not being a big fan of what I did see
  3. Not knowing what to expect on screen.

Warlock is a relatively obscure character for certain. I remember many of his stories being Soul Stone related--as in stories taking place INSIDE the universe existing within the Infinity stone.

I agree the ending credits cut scene was unimpressive and could have been omitted. Audience sees the cocoon, the camera pans back to the Sovereignty leader saying (from memory), "I think I will call him Adam." Scene freezes and credits start rolling again. Definitely a 'Wait. Wat? Oh well.' moment.

It will be interesting how they bring Warlock into the fold. The character is loaded with incredible abilities. His cosmic awareness, in particular, is at the top of the scale for physical beings, perhaps above that of even the Silver Surfer.

Punisher is back? They put him on Disney+ too like Daredevil? I must have missed that news. Always liked Bernthal's roles. Been a fan of his since I heard his Howard Stern interview.
