CFZ If winning playoff games is the priority, I just don’t understand an OBJ signing

It’s beyond me why our 80 year old owner and part time GM, after the last 27 years of playoff futility, spends so much of his time pursuing OBJ- a player that almost certainly won’t be able to help this team much if at all this year. All this happening at a time when this team needs anything but a circus.

In fact, what this team needs a lot more than a 30 year old gimpy WR:
  • Focus and attention to detail.
  • Mental and physical toughness to overcome adversity.
  • As a probable wild card team, becoming capable of winning road playoff games- something this team hasn’t done since the 1992 NFC championship game vs SF.
  • A commitment to being at their best the rest of the regular season and beyond.
I have nothing against Odell Beckham. He has been a very good NFL receiver. But obtaining his services just makes no sense right now when this team need focus, not a media circus with the signing of a has been WR. You don’t sign a WR in late Dec as THE “key” for a deep playoff run. But you do make that signing if getting a ton of attention is the goal.
Great post! You nailed it!

Bob, how long have you been a Cowboys fan, buddy?

let me remind you of the priorities of this franchise

1. Revenue
2. Revenue
3. Jerry Ego
4. Jerry Ego
5. Revenue
6. Jerry Ego
7. Ego of other Joneses
8. Revenue
9. Revenue
10. Ego of remaining Joneses
This is a common perception many misguided fans have. Jerry wants to win more than any of us here do. He just hasn’t been good at it since the early 90’s.

Signing Beckham:
*Cowboys throw the ball more to make WR happy.
*Cowboys lose more games b/c they throw more.
*Don't have the money to re-sign/keep home grown contributors.
*Unknown production from older, injury prone WR.
*Drama, hyper-reporting from media over anything WR says or does.
*Teammates annoyed by being asked questions about a guy who hasn't earned it, this season like their teammates have.

I keep hearing this OBJ stuff is causing a circus ? With whom?
The fans ?
This forum ?
The media ?
Don’t hear of or see any reports of an actual disruption at Cowboys headquarters, locker room, practices or with team?
The circus is mainly here, social media etc…
This team has been a circus for 26 years.

Eyeballs. Jerry is in the eyeballs business.

OBJ may or may not have anything left. We may or may not sign him. But keeping eyeballs on the Cowboys makes Jerry money.
I hope signing obj never happens,it was stupidity to think he could be anything more than a decoy at this point,it takes 2 years to fully recover from that injury, look at Gallup for instance, yes he's playing but he isn't the same player he was and won't be till next year.obj would be nothing but a waste and also taking up a much needed roster spot.

I told you before about appeal to authority.

Again, you don't have to be Gordon Ramsey to know your food is poorly cooked.

You also have a major problem with hubris. Get over yourself.
Nah...I'm very confident in my ability and knowledge...if you aren't, that's your problem....

I get that
But actually longer
The attention they garner even before jones made them a circus
Heck they made movies about them in 70’s
My point is this OBJ stuff is not a circus impact for the team
We make it a circus - the team
Is the team

Players and coaches love the media hype about OBJ.

It means they get softball questions from the media instead of criticism or questions about internal team hot button issues.

McCarthy can answer questions about OBJ or about failed 4th down conversions. Which do you think he prefers to answer.

I hope we don't sign OBJ to anything beyond this year, or anything expensive this year.

But I think Gallup looks *better* than he ever has already. He used to be the single coverage guy that we'd take shots at deep. Now he's become a solid possession receiver catching slants in traffic.

..I'm concerned if Dallas aquires him and we got knocked off first round playoffs.

Were going to be laughing stock for years to come. Best to let things be.
People laugh at us regardless. We can win a SB and people will laugh.

Jerry equates OBJ to Randy Moss. A player that got away and certainly made Jerry regret it. Jerry is not letting the second coming of Randy Moss escape him again. In reality, this may not make sense but in his 80-y/o mind, this is the demon he is trying to put to rest.

When is the last time the Cowboys made a Jerry type move...?

Drafting Jaylon Smith?

Jerry loved Randy Gregory. Stephen did not.
- Gregory Gone.

Jerry loved Dez...

Would Jerry dump a player like Cooper for cap reasons?

IMO, the floor on Hilton is higher, but the ceiling is higher for OBJ.
It's all in how we use OBJ. He's an added piece that costs some money and takes the bottom roster spot away from whoever is there now.
Your objections are all based in us being stupid about that use. Which is not entirely unrealistic, but I'd rather they base their choices on good sense instead of lack of faith in their own competence.
And players getting upset over reporter questions need to get over themselves. Sports is an entertainment business. They need to get over it.

The prevailing reasons people have been giving for Jerry dumping Cooper were personality based. Having opinions while a player, and refusing the covid jab.
