Progress Report: Chauncey Golston

I always feel Golston, is a prime example of when position flex doesn’t allow a player to fully develop. It’s great he can play DT and DE. But this always makes him depth and unable to take the next step. He played well against Washington in the final week of the season

I agree and I honestly don’t get their insistence on putting him at DT but I guess that’s the only way he can get on the field.

Yeah, I hate that position flex crap. Ruined many potential careers IMO.

Yeah.. Like when they try to put Parsons at linebacker and he’s clearly a jag that makes little impact but as a pass rusher he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.

I think it's because Golston is not great at either position but solid at both. I don't see him being a high level starter at either.

Position flex is a good thing. It is being cast as a bad thing on this site, but that was due to our very poor understanding of personnel by both JG and Jerry. It is very common for a big DE to play DT on passing downs, which means he needs to learn both positions. Justin Tuck was a great example of that, often playing both DT and DE during a game. His position flex is one of the primary things that made him great.

He provides a strong rotation.

There is nothing to complain about here.

If we drafted him in round 1 then sure it would be ok to be upset. For where we got him I’m happy with how he plays. Good player imo.

No complaint. Like you said good rotational guy, and you gotta have guys like him but they also need to keep looking for guys with maybe higher ceiling

Parsons is a LB and if they stop messing with it might be one of the best in the history of the game. That doesn't mean you can't toss him at DE on certain plays.

His instincts for linebacker aren’t all that great.

His instincts for rushing the QB are rare.

His plays dipped from his rookie year to his 2nd year.
So is this that 3rd year fork in the road for him to improve.
I never been overly impressed but not down on him either. But he does need to step up. Do they draft a possible replacement for if he doesn't.

Golston looked good when they gave him playing time (Game 17 and the playoffs).

In game 17 he had 11 tackles in 22 snaps (He played DT).
- Gallimore had 4 tackles in 22 snaps in that game.
 
I think there was an adjustment period for him to become a full-time under-tackle but he seemed to come on in the 2nd half of the season. To be honest, I'm probably expecting him to progress more than anybody on defense other than Sam Williams. I think he went from about 265 lbs to 285 lbs last off-season as there got to be an adjustment period to playing a new position and at a much heavier weight. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes in above 290 lbs and takes another jump.

I could see Golston getting a large snap increase as a 4i if we dont draft someone better like Dexter, Tuipulotu or Young
