I can’t remember an example of a team cutting a player, getting hit with dead cap from the contract, and then re-signing that player in the same off-season.

Why would we do this? He refused to re-do his deal, so now that we’ve taken the dead cap hit and his camp realizes he has no market, we’re going to shell out more money to him?

A lot of fans just latch onto "sound bites" without any evidence to back them up. It can be a statistic like averaging 3.8 YPC to determine that a back isn't good for anything. Never mind the amount of short-yardage and TD success, which does have value.

I'm for re-signing Elliott, if the price is right, and then having a true open competition. Frankly, if someone like Luepke looks like a better short-yardage back and using a tandem of Pollard/Vaughn looks better than a Pollard/Elliott tandem, then he should be cut. I don't know if the team would do that (which is the only concern), but I'm for having options then eliminating the options based on who is best. I prefer players being beaten out for roles rather than the job just being given to them because you don't have any other options.

Zeke is certainly worth bringing back for a price that fits the role. Currently the backs we have to replace him are downgrades.

Gotta love Jerry and his loyalty. Doing everything he can to help out his buddy Zeke. Jerry has absolutely no intention of resigning the old and slow Zeke. But he does his buddy a service by acting like there is a market for him. Which there is none.

Only people that talk about "great pass blocking backs" and "short yardage backs" are Cowboys fans. Nowhere in the NFL do fans talk of backs like that.

And if we did want a "reliable short yardage back" why would we want Zeke?

Zeke is now a scrub like that most of the backups on our roster. However that doesnt mean we should bring back the scrub Zeke. At least the scrubs we now have know their place.

He did not refuse to redo his contract. Dallas made no offer too. They said it felt insulting to ask to take a big pay cut. And was better to release him at that point.

I believe the Eagles did those with Fletcher Cox. Released him to get rid of the big contract and resigned him later on.

It’s times like these when I get really annoyed at the cowboys’ unwillingness to take risks. I think the team is pretty damn close to legitimately competing for a superbowl and an acquisition like Hopkins could be the move that puts them over the edge. The defense is rock solid and has even been improved upon from last season. It is a difference maker. The offense has most of the pieces but could really use another pass catcher and some shoring up of the oline. I realize that making a move for Hopkins could impact your future but at some point you have to make that call, like all franchises do at some point unless they have Mahomes. This should be that moment but the Cowboys are going to stand pat and their chances of improving on last season will be lower for it.

There won’t be near as much hating on Zeke if he’s brought back on a cheap one year deal. The players that receive the most hate by the fans on this board are the ones that are getting paid big money. Players look a lot better to Cowboys fans when they’re playing for cheap.
