Why Mazi Smith's NFL Debut was pretty good - Video Analysis

He's a predictable koolaid dispenser.

ALWAYS
I think he is a pretty good at analyzing plays.

You can always turn the volume down and watch the video and provide your own commentary.

So, how about analyzing the plays and tell me what you see.

No, it's even more simple than that. Mazi has a horrific habit of standing up at the snap. In doing so, he loses the leverage battle. He got away w/ it in college, as he is so strong he could manhandle most OL's even w/ this technique flaw.

Now, though, he's in the NFL where everyone is strong. If he ever corrects this flaw and stays low, he will be pushing the OL back into the QB on a regular basis. He has the strength to do so.

Hard to say why it's not corrected. He might be stubborn, but in all likelihood, it's just a matter of reconditioning his instincts. It's very hard to relearn something after doing it wrong for his entire career.
You’re saying the same thing Nate Newton and Jessie Holley said on Hangin With the Boys yesterday. They talked about how too many college programs aren’t doing these kids any favors with what they’re being taught (which made them talk about how DL @ Georgia and Alabama seem to get complete coaching and that’s why most of them come into the league ready to roll).

Some players aren't immediately ready to play the full load. As long as he can contribute on a rotational basis and continues to get better thats fine for this year.

If we're still seeing a part time, limited snap player a couple years from now then please pass judgement.
NT is a really hard position. It seems simple but there is so much to learn. He had a solid game on limited snaps and will probably get more going forward. To me the key is season over season improvement

Well to be fair, while Mazi only played 17 snaps, the starter Hankins only played 18. (at least that is what I read somewhere)

So because the Giants were in a hole so freaking fast, it seems that Quinn didn't feel the need to use the "Big Boys" most of the game.

Just pointing that out.

I do a ton of research and analysis myself, so it's not shocking that these guys are pointing it out also. One of the primary places I've learned is right here on the site.

Thank you for honest, researched takes. We need more of that on here.

There are quite a few good posters on this site that will give you a plethora of info and data and analyses. The hardest part is figuring out who to listen to. Oh, and just stay out of the QB threads, they're completely full of a few posters constantly spatting w/ no information.

I remember two years ago when Quinn first came in, all of our guys were having these issues. Our DL basically have to know all the techniques so they can adjust on the fly. We have seen the fruits of that this past Sunday where Q was able to adjust the technique in situ to shut down the Giants middle run.

It's a great thing to have. If you watched the Vikings trot out the same front ad nauseum on Thursday, you get a feel what it is like not being able to do that.

The issue here is that Mazi needs to learn the keys and techniques for all of the different calls. It's going to take time but he is biting as a puppy and he does put in the work. He will be fine.

I said months ago: expect little to nothing of Mazi in year one. He'll need time. My message faced nothing but attack.

I'm not down on the player at all! But let's not gloss over it: he's been a bit less impressive than even I expected. Let's give the kid time...but also... let's not compose fiction about where Mazi is right now.
If we get little to nothing from him in year one he’s not going to end up being a good player and won’t be seeing a second contract. There were fans on this board the day we drafted Mazi saying he was better than Jalen Carter. I do believe we’ll get more than little to nothing from him this season. He should get better as the season goes on, but only time will tell if he ends up being the answer at DT.

Good point, I was surprised Golsten played so many snaps but makes sense with the game plan. Its nice having that luxury.

Right! DL especially interior are slow to develop. Won’t really have a bead on what we got till after at least an offseason in a pro weight lifting program. Part of the reluctance of putting high capital at the position. Have fun getting the need for instant gratification pea nut gallery to comprehend that reality!

Exactly
This week we need them to be beasts in there. The jets have to run the ball to have a chance and they have a really good runner

I've asked to remain anonymous but you're welcome.

Thanks for sharing. It was a great debut. I must say Gallimore is garbage. He just can’t play. Golston and Fehoko need to get his snaps.
It was not a “great” debut. Lol

It was better than his horrid preseason look.

He didnt play much and it was up and down. All he showed in that video was 4 of his good plays.

He showed none of the bad plays.

Well said. The kid has not looked great.

Do you still make them your first round draft choice?

Yeah, thank goodness he wasn’t a first rounder like Carter. Now THAT’S what a 1st rounder looks like.
