The bigger argument is what percentage of Super Bowls are won by 1st round picks .
If you’re looking for exceptions there are several but I’d prefer to go with higher odds.
More importantly, a first rounder is more likely than not to be a bust.

No doubt less than Elite or 1st round picks can win a SB with a complete team. But the odds are greater with one.

Plus who truly believes our front office can build such a team? I’m not ever sure they could build one with an Elite QB. Lol
I agree.
There are many factors besides a first round QB, who more likely than not will not be elite.
We have a first rounder.

Draft status means nothing as proof by Purdy…..Dak didn’t lose to the Packers because he was a 4th round pick lol.
This is actually false. The things on Dak's scouting report, such as being slow to process the field, slow to read defenses, throws errant long balls, doesnt throw on target...are what made him a 4th round pick AND consquently, are also why he lost to the packers.

They also have great front offices and coaches who created a culture of accountability and toughness.

It’s why he sucked against the 9ers? Possibly. But his draft status has nothing to do with the Packers scoring 50 points on us and it would’ve been 70 if they didn’t go prevent and put reserves in.

Bro, the score was 48-22 with 6 minutes left and Packers backups in. That was not a valiant effort
Bro...they scored on 5 of 6 drives from before the half. The defense never stopped them.

If I draft a first rounder then I’m wasting a piece to give Lance. I don’t know if he is the guy but I don’t know if a late first rounder is either.
Either he can win with what we have or he can't. I would take Penix if he fell and let them battle it out. Start giving the winner of that fight more pieces next year. I'm willing to sacrifice a year. We've already sacrificed 3 decades.

I know that, and the offense did absolutely nothing when they were on the field in the first half

I recall at one time that about 80% of winning SB QB’s were 1st round picks. But when I was looking up data to support this I ran across this article which was startling .

There have been 38 quarterbacks drafted in the first round since 2011, the year the NFL changed the collective bargaining agreement to set a wage scale for rookie deals, making it extremely affordable to draft a quarterback.

If winning a Super Bowl is too finite a goal (and only one quarterback on his rookie deal has led his team to the Super Bowl) then we can expand to being one of the four final teams in the postseason. Besides Mahomes:

Three others led their teams to a Super Bowl appearance (Burrow, Goff, Newton — who was not on his rookie deal at the time).

Three others led their teams to a Conference Championship Game (Bortles, Luck, Allen).

This of course focuses on winning in Rookie deal but later in the article it also discusses how it’s actually more likely in recent years to acquire an aging QB , former 1st rd pick , to win a SB.

Very insightful article which opened my eyes. Good read!!

picking high in the first rd is the most sure way to get a franchise QB no doubt of that
BUT the vast majority of first rd QBs never get to the promised land

Its not quite playing the lottery but its certainly a long shot

Warner, Brady, Romo, Dak, Purdy are all outliers

Ok if Penix fell that’s different. I was under the impression he was a top 5 pick. I’d rather draft a offensive tackle personally and not have to pray and hope Smith stays healthy.

I’m not sure I’d call it a long shot. But with such a premium in QB’s often reach on 1st rounds. And so many of these picks go to crappy teams which doesn’t help. The bust rate is high.

I’d argue and the odds are certainly greater winning a SB with a 1st round pick. It’s really not close. But there are several exceptions.

I think with all the risks taken for a 1st round pick it’s fairly obvious how franchises see it.
