I'd be scared to take a guy in the first round, what if he comes in is good? Could we still blame the coaches, offensive line, running backs, wide receivers and defense?
The horror!. He MIGHT be good? We wont stand for that nonsense.
That qb needs traded for a 5th and conditional.

Yup it’s been 35 years since we drafted Troy Aikman and he was the last quarterback to win us a Super Bowl. Jerry… hey Jerry are you listening to me Jerry.
Forget about 1st round quarterbacks. What about 2nd and 3rd round qbs taken since than?

Check my memory but maybe just Quincy in the 2nd who should have been a 4th?

No qb taken In the 2nd?

Isiah Stanback, Stephen McGhee and Rayne Dakota all 4th rounders

That's a lot of crap drafted right there and alot of neglect by the FO for the most important position

Be interesting to see how high QB's were selected who won a Super Bowl since we won out last one with Troy.

Patrick Mahomes
Joe Burrow
Josh Allen
Aaron Rodgers
Justin Herbert

Jalen Hurts
Lamar Jackson
Dak Prescott (ranks here)
Trevor Lawrence
Deshaun Watson (hurt last year don't forget how he played in houston)

All of these QB's have a potential to be a second team all-pro in our pass heavy offensive system where Ceedee lamb is designed to get 110+ targets in the year. when you figure out we did this with a middle of the pack QB, you will start to realize he is our Achilles heal
lol….Herbert sure lit it up with Kellen Moore last season.

So....we shouldnt try? What is it you want done?
Improve around the margins as the team is not exactly in need of a massive rebuild. They just lost a playoff game because there was a S playing LB. At the end of the day that situation being resolve in the most important thing. Also probably to be a little more active in free agency to address the actual holes that were made because it is important to recognize that now is the window to go for it not the window to rebuild. Trying to do neither just leaves you with a team that is almost good enough but not quite.

Troy Aikman as first pick in 1989 draft; Steve Walsh in Supplemental Draft 1989. Has any other team gone so long, 58 years, with only one QB drafted in the first round? Ponder this for many moments.

In 1979, the Cowboys were on the board in the third round and loved TE Doug Cosbie, who turned out to be a very good selection. However, the top player on their board was not selected, Joe Montana!!!!

In 2005, after selecting Demarcus Ware with the 12th pick in the first round, the Cowboys also had the 20th selection and Parcels picked LSU DE Marcus Spears, who did not turn out well. Left on the board, snatched with the 24th pick of that round, was Aaron Rodgers!!!!!

Opportunity knocks not too often.

Rodgers' skill set was far superior to Romo, who ran a 5.2 and was undrafted. His lack of straight ahead foot speed, although he had short area evasiveness, hindered him from greater success. Romo was on the bench 2003-2005. Parcells was responsible for Quincy Carter and Marcus Spears.

With Parcells in 2004, the Cowboys' starting QB was an ancient Vinnie Testaverde, overtaking Quincy Carter, whose drug escapades caused his departure. In 2005, the Cowboys went to a Statue of Liberty at QB, Drew Bledsoe. Rodgers was there for the taking.

Joe Montana could have led the team to better results through the 1980's. Rodgers, if selected instead of Marcus Spears, for sure would have taken several Boys' teams to Super Bowl champions.

Boys selected Quincy Carter 2nd round out of Georgia even though most on campus knew he was a drug user.
Boys like to take hand-me downs as QB, undrafted Tony Romo and comp pick at end of 4th round Dak. They hoped Drew Henson could muster his NCAA greatness after a failed baseball career. They tried to turn Ryan Leaf around. They gave a 4th for Trey Lance, who was dumped by the 49ers, who had to be convinced Lance has no chance of becoming what they had projected. Other QB dumps lately have gone for very late draft picks, not as high as a 4th.

So think about it again: the Boys took Marcus Spears, who never lived up to his LSU greatness, over Aaron Rodgers.

If Boys want a franchise QB who has "it, " they are usually found in the first round. Dak, who clearly lacks "it," 2-5 in playoff games, is robbing the team of player salary flexibility and I feel we are back to the dark days of purgatory, with the inability to sign free agents to supplement our draft pick winners.

Jimmy Johnson signed free agents -- called Plan B back then -- Jay Novacek TE, LB Vinson Smith, safety James Washington, all of whom became starters when he needed talent. He also made trades for disgruntled players who started for the Boys: safety Thomas Everrett, G John Gesek, DT Tony Casillas and DE Charles Haley.

The Cowboys haven't valued the safety position for years either, in the past 2 years we had 3 safeties, maybe we need 3 qb's??? lol Put them all on the field at the same time!

What are we talking about here? Why would you draft a QB in the first round if you already have a franchise QB? That removes a lot of years. I can see doing it if your QB is aging and on his way out. But other than that, why?

Totally agree, this franchise's history with qb's has been luck and trying to keep repeating the same luck. Though it has bridged owners and gms. I made a post here recently showing the history of Dallas qb's and how each was acquired. It backs up what you are saying

even when we have had an aging qb we didnt get ready for the next one, Aikman is a perfect example. Then they fiddled about for years with guys like Bledsoe. They always want to quick fix and the qb on the cheap. They lucked out with Staubach and White that way and they have never stopped looking for the low cost high upside guy. Even Drew Henson was like that, oh he changed his mind about baseball, lets grab him.

Both Tony Romo and Dak Prescott have out-performed 90% of all 1st round QBs taken during their careers.

Dallas used 1st overall picks for both Aikman and Walsh.
Since then, Dallas has drafted one overall only 1 time. In 1991.

Using Aaron Rodgers and Joe Montana as examples show you are not even close to being serious.

Dallas high picks can very much be scrutinized but have been few.
Zeke at 4.
TNew at 5
Mo (who was falling like a cinderblock) at 6.
Greg Ellis at 8.

Reality is Romo and Dak made them too good to draft an R1 QB because they have picked mid to low R1 any year those guys have been healthy.

Dallas did not have an R1 pick to use on a QB post Aikman because they traded TWO of them for Joey Galloway.
So they swung for QCar. Maybe they thought the white line fever was gonna work out like it did for Irvin and Hollywood (and LT)??

You can look at 1998. Dallas drafted 8th and took the very safe Greg Ellis. But what QB were they going to take? Manning went 1, Ryan Leaf 2. The next QB wasn't drafted until Charlie Batch at pick 60.

2002 we were trash and drafted Roy Williams at 8.
But that draft produced basically zilch at QB. Rather had traded up to pick 3 for Joey Harrington?
And after pick 8 only Patrick Ramsey at 32 amongst top 60 picks.

You have to either get lucky at QB or collect elite resources.
Dallas does some head-scratching, just dumb stuff but the complaints just as often don't hold water under any level of scrutiny.

Dallas could trade this year's first and the next 2 and they probably cannot get high enough to draft any of the top 3 QBs in this class....

Drafts produce 2.5 starting (25 or more career starts) QBs on average. That includes guys like Sam Darnold and Kenny Pickett who are definitely not "hits".

Who has what? If you give your QB a 4 year 160M dollar contract you're not going to draft a QB in the first round unless you're an idiot.
Well ..... Jerry is an idiot.

But they have not given Dak anything yet.

First of all completely different era and scenario, literally was the worst team in the NFL or at least one of them, going through bankruptcy in a complete burn down to the ground and start over scenario..

with them having the number one pick in the draft that has nothing to do with where we are right now because right now we're a team that won 36 games two division titles have been to the playoffs three straight years we know we're sniffing the top five when we're drafting we already have a top quarterback in the league completely ridiculous hypothetical comparison between the two actual situations where those franchises were...

And by the way how many times have people gotta point this out drafting quarterbacks is not a blueprint to a guaranteed success which is what winning a Super Bowl??

Literally 95 quarterbacks have been taken in the draft since 2016 when we got Prescott and only one of them have won a Super Bowl.. We have consistently picked in the bottom five of every round in the draft the last three years or so there's been almost no opportunities to even look for another quarterback or a good reason that we should literally we have a second team all pro #2 in MVP voting quarterbacks you usually aren't trading your entire draft for the next three years to go find a quarterback that high in the draft when you already have one on the team...

I believe if we were in that scenario again where we were picking in the top three to five of the draft didn't have to mortgage our entire draft for the next three years they would pick a quarterback they are finally at that point over the next two or three years we need a replacement for Prescott but not in a very long time have we been in that scenario...
