Pickens' criticism is largely overstated

You guys are insane
Prime 2012 - 2014 Dez was about how GP is performing right now. Pickens needs to finish with 1400 + yards to be equivelant the Dez' 16 game best of 1392 total yards and 12 TDs.

Dez had 16 TDs in 2014 with 1332 total yards.

Dez only had 3 seasons (2012-2014) with 1000 or more yards.

Pickens has 1 season with 1000 yards or more (2023 for 1142 yards and 6 TDs), but he did that on just 63 receptions (18.1 avg)!

Pickens is receiving single coverage most of the time.

Dez at times was getting guarded like this

Right? Dez was a baller. I liked having him, but Pickens was the #1 in Pittsburg and put up stats similar to Dez' early years as well. I'm not really trying to make the comparison, but it's arguable. I'm just commenting that it's a reasonable statement on paper and/or film.

If we're talking pure route running and route tree, Pickens is objectively better. I think that's where the poster was going.

Dez was a brute who could physically man-handle guys the way few have ever done in the NFL. He's elite in that category—more physical than Pickens.

We'll see how Pickens finishes the season, and we'll see how his career finishes, how healthy he stays, etc.

I'm glad we got him. He's our WR1 right now with Lamb on the team, he's #2 in the entire NFL, and that says quite a bit.

Just read his write up in the Players’s Tribune. I love this guy man. I genuinely would be upset if we don’t give him an extension in the offseason. This is the kind of guy that just makes you want to believe we can win it all one day

No he wasnt man.

Was he a problem at times? Yes

As big of a problem as Pickens? Please

The Steelers, a team that has struggled on offense for years, thought it was in their best interest to trade a highly talented 24yo receiver and trade a 2nd rounder for a lesser receiver and give him $150m.

Let that sink in. And this was Mike Tomlin btw.
Steelers have gotten rid of tons of wrs, that’s what they do. Just bc the Cowboys have no accountability doesn’t mean they don’t have problem Childs. Dez was a huge problem. You aren’t remembering correctly.

LOL

“Steelers have gotten rid of tons of WRs” isnt helping your case. Instead of actually discussing why Pickens isnt/wasnt a big problem, this is your excuse?

Isnt it odd that no other team was offering Pitt more than a 5th round pick for him?

I don’t get the hate. Dude has been consistently great all year. All WRs can be head cases but I think Dez was a lot more problematic and don’t even get me started on Mike lol. Hell even Cooper felt like he flat out quit sometimes

I don’t get the narrative people have with him and he flat out makes this team better
The thread title mentions Pickens criticism. As an uninformed fan, I'm not aware of what you are talking about. Was the criticism flat out false or was it just exaggerated? Can you expand on what you think was, "overstated"?

Of course Pickens was a big problem in Pitt , I’m not denying that. You mentioned Pitt getting rid of him like that’s something new. That’s what they do. Pickens is a problem , so. Was Dez. Only one of us here is denying one of them being a problem.

I have questions about both Pickens and for that matter, CeeDee’s effort on occasions. I just know that there are a bunch of teams that would love to have our “problematic “ receivers.

I think this is going to be an interesting offseason because Jerry doesn’t want a Micah situation but you have to question whether making Pickens a top paid receiver a smart thing to do. His contract language will be interesting.
