3-4 defense and the new coordinator

All teams play multiple fronts.

Nickel is by default a 4 man line.

Quinnen Williams played in a 3-4 for part of his time with the Jets.

Osa played 3-4 DE in college.
Clark played NT in a 34 his first 7 seasons.
S Thomas played 34 in Frisco
Clowney assuming they resign him played it in Houston.
Houston played 34 at Jackson.
Even Williams (going on a limb to resign) played 34 at Ole Miss!

I don't think we know what he runs or what he prefers since he's never been a DC. I'm assuming he'll figure it out based on our roster.

I read in one of the threads that the new DC will run a 3-4. How would that work for us?

Osa and Clark at DE? WIlliams in the middle. Or will Clowney play DE(assuming we resign him). EZE at OLB? Justin Houston OLB? Or would Overshown be an OLB?

Any ideas?
I think we could have put any of those guys at LB this past season and they would’ve been better than all but D-Over.

I think Overshown will play one of the middle LBs. EZ is built like a 3-4 DE and Clowney would be an outside as weill.

We nede to replace a bunch of players on the back end of the defense already, so it's not a bad year to switch to more 3-4 given we can find players for the scheme and have solid DTs that can play DE in the 3-4.

One more idea is to bring in a full-sized nose and rotate QW (303 lbs), Clark (313 lbs), and Osa (280 lbs) at DE. Keep in mind that Clark sees himself as a Nose and is the biggest of the 3 (313 lbs), so I'd picture him lined up at nose.

I don't know that anything is known as far as what we will play. He has never been the one to make these decisions so we don't know what he will do here. But if it is a 3-4 I assume it is Clark at NT and the other two at DE. Toia would be a backup NT if here and Thomas and Winfrey (again if here) I think would be decent DE backups

I'm not usually a fan of the 3-4 but I can see the value at least as a hybrid look based on our personnel

He's a disciple of Vic Fangio & Vance Joseph who is also a disciple of Fangio. So yes we do know what he's going to run. He might put his own spin on it but it's still going to be that system.

Fans talking running a 3-4 with this line of linebackers we have
In a 3-4 the outside guys are edge guys that would play DE in a 4-3. There is two off the ball inside LBs that are equal to a Mike and Will LB in a 4-3. So that is less off ball LBs than a 4-3, More similar to nickel which also only has two off ball LBs on the field.

You mean 3-4 OLB for Eze, not 3-4 DE.

Oops! Thanks man. That'd be pretty funny to watch for a couple snaps! LOL

That's exactly what I wanted to say, OLB.

Can the mods fix that so it makes sense? LOL

. We don’t know that at all. He worked for them. They had specific personnel and so do we. We don’t know for sure what he is going to run here. Just because a coach works under another coach who has a particular system it doesn’t mean he will run the exact same system. And read up on Fangio, he hasn’t been a pure 3-4 guy. Very hybrid and different at different times.

Dallas needs to use their two first rounders on D, LB help.. and get one or two more premium FA with vet experience.. Heck use the remainder of the picks on the defense too. The playoffs showed how behind Dallas is compared to the playoff caliber teams. Not good.

IOW, defense needs to be a priority this offseason. The offense will have to do with what they got. All in Baby !!

He already said he likes to disguise things so that tells me he will probably run a mix. By the way I think he was a very good hire. I like that Schotty made the call. Shows promise for Jerry stepping back. Draft will be interesting.

If the Cowboys switch to a 3-4, most of the returning players that play the two OLBer spots on early down, base defense sets would be guys who are currently DEs like EZ and Clowney (if re-signed). We need a Mike either way. In a 4-3 a traditional Mike and in a 3-4 one to play next to Overshown. A 3-4 if anything reduces our need for "LBers"

Don’t see it happening.

There’s no way any DC would waste Q at NT. IFIT actually happened, Q would be a DE in the JJ Watt mold.
