Mixed signals continue as to whether Myles Garrett could be traded

Only 14 months ago, Myles Garrett made a public push to be traded by the Browns. In response, the Browns did what the Browns usually do with any problem they encounter.

They threw money at it.

A market-level contract ($40 million per year) moved the boiling pot to a back burner. There’s still reason to think it could be simmering.

The truth on Garrett and the Browns is elusive. On one hand, G.M. Andrew Berry continues to call Garrett a “career Brown.” On the other hand, Garrett seems to be ready to give up a $1 million workout bonus by skipping the team’s offseason program.

Then there’s the recent contract modification, which delays the deadline for Garrett’s offseason option bonuses from the 15th day of the league year in March until seven days before the start of the regular season. Obviously, that allows the Browns to trade Garrett without paying the option bonus.

I’ve already heard rumors about a potential draft day trade with Cleveland. It was mentioned as picks 12 and 20 for picks 6 and 39.

This got me thinking of something.

What about 12 and 20 - and next year’s remaining 1st rounder - for #6 and Myles Garrett?

You could get a top player for the secondary at #6 (Downs, Delane) AND shore up your pass rush with the best in the business.

The downside is that you’d be out of next year’s 1st round, which is being regarded as one of the very best in recent years.

Cleveland would be adding three 1st round picks over the next two years for their rebuild.

What say you?
I think a 2027 first round pick is untradeable until after the season

I will take Browns 6 and 39 for our 12 and 20. The reason is that at 6, we could potentially land Styles, Bains, Downs, maybe Bailey. But it is likely we don't have those as our options when we pick at 12. For 20, It is already a second rounder. 20 seems to be much better than 39 but actually they are all seconder round choices.
In this scenario I'd make the pick swap. We can still use 39 and our 3rd and future picks, players, to maneuver back up into round 1 again if a guy falls. NP doing this trade. But no way am I trading up to 6, giving up a 1 at pick 20 and lord knows what else they would insist on, for 1 player. Not when we clearly need several darts to add onto this team. Less darts is a bad idea.

That’s never made sense to me. If you can trade the ‘higher one’, you can also trade the ‘lower one’. If it’s designated in the terms of one trade, it can also be designated in the other.
I don't know why frozen, but they are. My best guess is that they technically wont own the rights to either pick until it conveys, and therefore could be restricted from trading it until they have the rights. The doesn't stop NBA teams, but different CBA's. That is just a guess though

Ive never been able to find concrete information as why its frozen. Only that it is frozen

I wonder what the rationale is for this? The Jets don’t know what the pick they’re getting is, so another team wouldn’t know what pick they’re getting. As long as the team you’re trading with agrees to the deal, what’s the problem?

Cowboys shouldn’t be trading any 1st’s anyway.

I’m not sure this is the reason but I’ll take a stab, though I may be wrong.

We are applying reasoning using a logical outcome while the NFL is applying contractual reasoning. Logically the outcome is the same…team A gets the best pick and team B gets the worst pick. And neither team knows what that pick will be.

A normal trade creates an independent contractual agreement. The Cowboys get X and GB gets the best of 2 picks. A single conditional trade is self contained and independently valid.

But allowing the trading of two picks where 1 team gets the best and 1 team the worst creates an interdependency between the 2 trades. It creates a second trade where the asset is defined by the outcome of a separate conditional trade. The second trade is no longer considered independent because it can’t be validated without referencing the first trade.

Logically it seems meaningless but contractually it muddies the water in the eyes of the NFL and they don’t like muddy water. IMO, it’s a contractional, not a logical issue.

Doesn't make sense and I'm bet a lawyer might say otherwise all you have to stipulate is

"We are trading you our lower of our first round picks whenever that ends up being"*

Seems like they're making it complicated the Cowboys have two 1st round picks they should be able to trade the lower of those whatever number that turns out to be it could end up being 32 or it could be 16.. Why does it matter in a contract if you make a trade to somebody you trade away whichever turns out to be the lowest of the 2 1st round picks how do they freeze both it doesn't make sense all you you don't know the number but you can just say it that way and damn, it's not complicated..

Your argument sounds very logical. As someone who has a little experience in contract law (not as a lawyer), I can almost guarantee you that it is around avoiding any potential contractual ambiguity.

Most lawyers don’t like contracts that are dependent on the outcomes of other contracts. They prefer contracts that are self-contained and independently verifiable. Could it be done…sure. But the NFL doesn’t like added complexity, especially if they could potentially be forced to mediate. And we all know teams and agents are always looking for loopholes and workarounds.

Another example that is somewhat similar is trading someone who has been tagged. Before a player can sign a contract with a new team, they first must sign their tag. Even if the player agrees with the trade, the tag (contract) must be closed before the new deal can be finalized. That way each agreement (the tag and the trade) is self contained and independently verifiable.

Does anybody really expect the Cowboys to acquire him even if he becomes available?

Why would Browns do it is the question….
Certainly, it takes two teams to complete the trade. I think only Browns wants to do it is that their targeted players can still be acquired at 12 and 20. Think about jumping from 39 to 20 could give you more choices. They may not need to get DE or Safty, but for WR, or offense line, they could definitely get those players at 12 and 20.

Their team is so bad I would draft BPA but I know team try to plug holes so I get it.

If youre the browns why not?

If Micah is a Luxury for Dallas then what is Myles for the Browns?

you could ger a generational haul that makes the one Jimmy’s look like amateur hour

They would only be getting two first-round picks in your scenario. We trade 12, 20, and next year's first is three, but they trade us 6 back, so a net of two. Not sure why they would even entertain dropping back 6 spots and only getting two firsts for Myles.

For me, he is.
Ok. But you do realize not a single team would trade Hendrickson and 2 first round picks for Myles, right? Regardless of how good he is, the Browns still sucked along with the Raiders and Bengals.

But what matters is what Jerry thinks. Does he think Myles is two first round picks better?

No man is an island.

Who knows? This is all speculation and something interesting to consider. It may end up being nothing at all.

Why Myles Garrett to the Dallas Cowboys is actually possible

Why Myles Garrett to the Dallas Cowboys is actually possible image

Jan 4, 2026; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (95) celebrates with teammates following a sack against the Cincinnati Bengals during the fourth quarter at Paycor Stadium. The play set a new NFL single season sack record by Garrett.

The Dallas Cowboys are entering a pivotal 2026 season.

The team has missed the postseason for two years in a row, and we know Jerry Jones desperately wants to win again in his lifetime. If that's going to happen, though, the team needs to make some bold moves.
Before the 2025 season, the team shipped off star edge-rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. As a result, the Cowboys didn't have much pass-rush to speak of in 2025, and that needs to change going forward.

John Breech of CBS Sports believes there could be a perfect option for the Cowboys: Myles Garrett. Yes, the same Myles Garrett who just broke the NFL single-season sack record in 2025.

Garrett has spent his entire career with the Cleveland Browns, and as a result, hasn't done much winning. Perhaps the star wants to win while he's still in his prime, and he is a native of the DFW area.
Regarding this potential pairing, Breech offered the following:
The Cowboys were firmly in the hunt for Maxx Crosby, showing Jerry Jones' strong interest in adding a star pass rusher. Their reported offer included a 2026 first-round pick (No. 12 overall) and a 2027 second-rounder. They'd likely need to increase that for Garrett, but with two first-round picks this year, they have the capital to get a deal done. Garrett would transform the defense and could make Dallas the NFC East favorite. And the most Jerry Jones move imaginable would be trading for Garrett just seven months after dealing Micah Parsons, so don't rule it out.
