At what point do we give up on the Romo-Ware-Witten-Garrett core?

If you want to get rid of someone that we have best chance of replacing for someone better, it would be JG.

Get rid of them and replace them with who? Did everyone already forget how long and how many 1st rounders it took them to find a real pass rusher?

Did people already forget about Shante Carver, Ebenezer Ekubum, and Greg Ellis. This team didn't have a double digit sack artist for over 10 years until Ware came along.

And I'm sure I don't need to bring up all the QBs we went through before finding Romo.

horrible putting greg ellis with those scrubs. Ellis was a very good player for 10+ years . Ellis was our most consistent player for a decade. 86 sacks and you put him with carver and ekuban what a terrible fan.

Read the post in context. Yeh Ellis wasn't as bad as those other guys but as the 8th pick, I expected more.

The context of the post was how hard it was to find a double digit sack artist. My point was even though we spent multiple first round picks, we couldn't find one for 10 years until Ware came along.

Ware with one arm got us double digit sacks last year. You just can't expect to replace someone like that easily.

Gimme a coach who can motivate around that, anyday. Problem is, they don't exist. Better off giving a pass defense that can keep that from happening.

The team was flat on offense and defense. The intensity just wasn't there. Do you really think Rivers puts up those numbers if the team played up to it's talent level? If the offense didn't start off flat in both halves and actually had a little time of possession, if our d-line applied any consistent pressure against a backup o-line, etc...... then River's stats would not have been anywhere close to that. The team was not motivated and that is on the head coach. Do you truly believe this team played the best it could Sunday,? Do you think they left it ALL on the field or did they somewhat mail it in? A good coach gets the most out of his team and Garrett didn't do that Sunday!!

It's been time to give up on this core.

Only problem is you can't give up on Romo now. That extension destroys any chance of that

I agree. That contract is unmovable for min of 3 years. Whats interesting is this draft of QB might be deepest in long long time.

I'm not big on 'motivation,' one way or another. I'm bigger on skill and matchup advantages. We couldn't stop anybody in the second half on defense, and I think that had very little, if anything, to do with whatever coaching of their mental state they received. Overall, I think this team has a good mental attitude. That just doesn't help you cover that little RB who's not actually running an out-route, after all.

I will never understand why they don't do this and stop wasting the careers of Romo, Ware, Witten, etc. there is no salary cap as far as head coaches go, just go out there and get the best available.

Just this offseason you could've had Reid, Holmgren or Gruden, all of them much better than Garrett. Look at the Chiefs for crying out loud. Coaching matters, if only Jerry would realize that.

And Carter. Our pass defense lost us that game, for the most part. Romo played great. Witten had a big drop and a tough matchup, but obviously nobody's going to give up on him. Ware looks to me to be slowing down due to nagging injuries, so I'd give up on him as his effectiveness gradually declines. Garrett, I see as a big plus and not a negative, so that's a pretty easy one for me, as well. I'll give up on all of them individually when they can no longer contribute at a high level.
Romo did not play great. Romo did nothing to put this team in the end zone. He took meaningless sacks, (throw it away dude) couldn't convert on 3rd downs, he didn't do anything special. Dez dropped a pass, maybe his foot would've been in bounds if he caught it, maybe not. Still a poor throw. Witten & Harris dropped passes, but I saw the Patriots cast of nobodies drop passes too.

This team, with Romo, with Ware, with Witten, with Garrett, needs to just go away. I don't care about how great they are/were, the fact is, these people can't win. What happened to the proud days when we didn't put up with this junk on the field?

Romo threw 27/37 for 244 yards, 2 TDs, and no interceptions with a rating of 108.4 that game. He played great, and if you don't see it, it's because you won't see it because you've got a weird ax to grind. Dez's drop? It was a good throw. Witten's was a great throw. Harris' in the first quarter was another great throw. The offense also lost a fumble on the one yard line, which you cannot fairly put on Romo.

The issue on offense was we had 56 snaps to their 71 snaps, and they had almost 8 min more ToP than we did. We had a scoring drive that ended in a missed fg attempt and another that stalled on the one yard line. Obviously, the offense doesn't get credit for missed points, but the QB *did* get them in position, and the miscues Sunday were not at the QB position. I'll take his play this week every other week of the year and go home happy if you also tell me our pass defense won't be awful at the same time.

You see the thing with Romo is everything around him has to be 100% perfect in order for him to succeed. If a receiver drops a ball 3 minutes into the 1st quarter and the cowboys end up losing the game, the romo stans will use that one drop as ammo for why we lost. The oline has to be perfect, the receivers have to all be healthy and catch every ball, the romo friendliness has to be in the air, he has to be given the right to make his own play calls...etc...etc. he's been given a lot of this and we're still .500. i'm just sick of this crap man. no matter what we give this core of losers they always end up losers. i just laughed out loud when ware jumped off sides on that 3rd down play. it was just so typical of this core to show up small in the biggest moments. i'm ready to move on, this experiment has run its course.

At what point do we start looking at those around the 4 you listed above? To say these guys don't have it is completely ridiculous. My next question is at what point will we stop these ridiculous threads after a loss?

I would like to see the core we have now with a QUALITY coach. And, i'm hoping one is on the way after this season. You can't tell me we wouldn't be winning with Harbaugh, Gruden, or someone of that nature...Please Jerry, no more puppets...

These 4 are coach killers.. no coach is going to be able to come in and change these guys now. It's extremely difficult to teach old dogs new tricks.

What did he do in the biggest game of the season against the Commanders last year? I must have missed him in that game because I never saw him out there. Also, what did he do against the Chargers? I saw 1 tackle and 1 offsides from him.

How many more years of this before we realize it's never going to happen for this core? Have some of you already come to this conclusion?

Just curious b/c we've changed a lot of pieces around these four but it always equals out to 8-8. Maybe its just not meant to be for these four in Dallas.

Ware was MIA yesterday until a timely offside. Witten with a key drop. Romo does not look like a 100M dollar QB. Garrett is still robotically preaching the process. Anybody else just sick of this **** with this core and ready to move on from all of it? I mean for crying out loud folks it's been a decade of this misery!

I don't think you ever give up on them; you just don't make them the cornerstones of your team -- except maybe Romo -- when they are past their prime. Even at their age, they still serve a purpose.

The only problem, though, is Dallas seems to think they are the best at their position and fail to look at ways to upgrade those positions thinking they are set. Dallas' draft philosophy over the last several years is to skip over positions of presumed strength and try and add talent at other positions. What they should be doing is sticking to their board (no trading up or down) and drafting the BPA. Yes, Witten is a good player but was there someone available in the last several drafts that could have been better? Possibly. Same with Ware? Of course. Lee? Definitely!

If you look at all the core positions (QB, LT, pass rusher, shutdown CB, and WR) where you build a championship team, the only blue chip players under 27 are Dez and Smith. That's not good.

My point is, if you add the best talent you will have the best team. Dallas has not done that in quite awhile.

Coaching is the great equalizer in a parity-filled league.

There is a reason why teams like the Patriots, Saints, Chiefs and Broncos are undefeated.

It matters now, more than ever. Garrett simply is not the answer no matter how much people want to pretend he is.

The only guy I wouldn't mind sticking around and finishing his career with Dallas is Witten. The rest can go.

Of course, if some team that actually has a shot at a championship? And Witten somehow could land on that team? Then, he should go. He has earned it.

Getting rid of your three best players (minus Dez) isn't the solution to making any team better. With that, I'm not sure Ware has much time left regardless.

Herschel Walker comes to mind when you wrote this.

I'm about ready to press fast forward on the season and blow this thing to the moon. This team already wasted the prime years of the old core, I'm not about to watch them ruin Dez and Lee's career too by being stuck in mediocrity.

I'm already looking toward the draft. :D They need to start planning for upgrades at CB, LB, DT, DE, TE, G, and a developmental QB.

Unfortunately, it might already be too late. Romo, Witten, and Ware are all on the downsides of their careers. Their play will only decline from here. Would have been nice to see what a real HC with real authority could have done with them in their prime. Still worth a shot though. Hopefully another 8-8 season will open Jerry's eyes.
