If there is anybody in the league that can get him right it is Rod Marinelli. Certainly worth the chance to find out.

With that said, he will always hold a special place in my heart for being so kind (or stupid) as to expose UNC's cheating on his twitter page. And then giving the NCAA the road map to all his violations. :)

I keep seeing this written but no one backs it up as to why. Would like to know why people belive this.

Guy with a lot of physical upside, but he has two things working against him: a. He's a headcase... b. The guy can't gain weight to save his life, he just doesn't have the body structure to hold up against 300 pound OT's. Think Aaron Maybin with less burst.

IIRC was also a guy the LSU strength coach put on blast for missing workouts and basically being a bum.
Probably part of why he couldn't gain weight.

Because of what he has already done with this defensive line given the pressumed lack of talent. Add in his history of having very good and disruptive defensive lines, even sans much talent.

Honestly, it is a little unusual to see someone even questioning it. Marinelli is one of the most respected defensive line coaches ever, let alone in the game right now.

Marinelli is repeatedly referred to as a DL guru. His coaching style on the DL has historically produced very good pass rushes and fronts, and his players consistently call his praises. All media reports about Marinelli seem to be positive.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they were exaggerating his weight here. He's had trouble with his weight going all the way back to high school. Maybe something has changed, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'd be willing to bet that he's closer to 250-260.

Montgomery's last position with the Texans was DE. That's 3-4 DE. So I do not think he was in the 250 range. And reports out of Houston in preseason went on and on about how much weight he put on, even calling Montgomery "overweight". But I agree, Montgomery's biggest problem is his mouth, he does not know when to shut up.

But even at LSU, he looked a play hard player whenever I watched him. Very physical and actually more productive than the more acclaimed Mingo.

That has nothing to do with being able to handle a head case such as this guy. We'll soon see.

Because he has a string of successes going back to Chicago.
We talk about Selvie and Hayden here but there are lots of them from his Bears and previous other stops.
He makes it very, very simple.
Play 110% and get to the football or ****.

Most of these guys have been playing that way their entire life so it is how they produce the best.

When you start asking them to make reads and site adjustments many are just not as good.

Poor guy was about as bad a head coach and you can find but as a DL guy which has been his bread and butter for about 30 years he really has no peers.

Agreed 100%. He is in a position now where all he has to do is what he does best, which is coach up the D-line.

I recently learned Marinelli is a Vietnam vet. That probably gives him an extra measure of respect, at least it should.

Being a headcase and being unmotivated can be very different things. I don't think that Austin is considered a head case, he just didn't do the little things.

To add, Hatcher is having a career year and so is Selvie. And Selvie and Hayden were not even playing football last season. Marinelli is obviously doing miracles with this no name no experience defensive line.

Because he constantly challenges and motivates guy.
--recall the close but no cigar stuff?
He really pushed Ware and others who honestly need little pushing but they took it and responded and told us it mattered to them.
Other guys he simply tells them to go hard or they are gone.
Austin is a guy who that MAY resonate with having already been cut twice.

If a guy can't succeed playing 3 or 4 plays at a time at 110% he simply lacks an NFL future.
You really can't simplify it anymore.

It is actually harder right now for WRs to succeed here because they are asked to do so much with blocking and knowing site reads plus the breadth of play book.

I was hoping someone knew of experience he had with head cases such as this guy is. Apparently, he doesn't have any cause all I hear is the same "Kiffin/Marinelli are genuises" Except that about 2 weeks ago, everyone here was saying they sucked.

With his years of experience I'm sure Marinelli has worked with a few.

Haha it's true. Everyone said they sucked after the Denver game. It changes week to week
I'm interested in Montgomery. He must have some redeeming qualities. The texans took him in the 3rd

Warren Sapp had off field issues (was the original puff daddy) in college and seemed to do just fine under Marinelli. Peppers was also notorious not always going hard in games, played at pro bowl level under Marinelli with the Bears.
