you know I actually agree. Now I don't think all of this is on Garrett but I just see a team that lacks confidence late in games and its gonna be really really difficult to win in playoffs with that dynamic in place. I also think others should go too but due to contract implications we will need to ride out those contracts. I would do firing now and not wait until end of season.

I blame Garrett on that. For not drilling it into their heads or have someone do it for him before that play.

Oh that's right. Our head coach did not even know the rule. You could see him asking about it on tv. So how do you expect a young player to know it?

We are so lost with this coach.

Jerry thought he was a genius hiring a young Garrett. Instead we ended up with a coach in training and the training wheels are still on. We're hopeless until he is gone. The fact our loaded offense is a continuous failure with him should say everything.

I woulda been fine with playing to run the clock down to 25 seconds (even just kneeling like some people have mentioned) and then punt the ball to the 10 yard line. The Lions need a miracle to win in that situation. But a run to the outside allowing a hold to even happen was just awful.

The ultimate conservative playcalling would have ended the game. Almost no chance of a penalty and about 20 seconds left for a high punt...

How did he not know this? serious question

Because we have a dimwit as our game manager. There is no way to say it without sounding like a jerk.

Did they? 10pts off of 4 turnovers? a defense that gives up 600+yds, including another 400+yd passer and a 300+yd receiver? You can't pin it all on the coaching. You have to hold players accountable.

Ultra conservative playcalling is one thing, but poor, poor execution is 100% on the players.

Execution is not 100% on the players. A player is only as good as the one teaching him. All the talent in the world will go to waste if you don't have the right coach.

Just look at the teams that have great turn arounds over one year. The Chiefs were 2-14 last year with most of the same players they have now...if they weren't executing last year why are they doing it this year?

A coach is a teacher and a tactician. He has to know his enemy and how to put his players in the best position to succeed or "execute". Garrett doesn't do this. He force feeds his system to his players instead of adapting his system to take advantage of his players strengths.

He may be a great coach one day but he has a lot to learn and I'd rather him be learning while coaching another team to be honest.

Several problems with this strategy:

  • Three straight kneels would put the ball at around a 52-yard field goal attempt. That's not an FG attempt that gives an extremely high level of confidence. Sure, Bailey has been clutch, but a 52-yard FG is by no means something you can take for granted.
  • Picking up a first down TRULY ends the game in Dallas' favor. When you have the opportunity to get a first down, you try for it.

that was the key......, line up in victory formation and no one is going to hold and the clock keeps running. This is literally snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. Typical Garret though, way in over his head.

What did Garret do wrong after the penalty? Honest question. Should he have run the ball on 4th down to drain the clock? Giving the ball back to Detroit around their twenty yard line, needing a FG to tie (not win)?

It was strange how the first play was a passing play, which of course ended up incomplete. Either you play to win with passes or you kill the clock and play it conservatively. It seemed they gave up going for the kill after that first pass went incomplete, and decided to just run it to change the clock, thus changing their minds.

I am actually okay if they ran it, but they need to mix it up with the formations. Time and time again, we see Garrett going for obvious running plays and formations and they don't usually work out, and in this case, it was especially bad because our #1 running back was out. Go for a single-back formation and spread receivers out wide to at least look like it could be a pass!

The defense and the team in general just had no life after they thought they had won the game after giving it back to Detroit with :56 seconds left and no timeouts. It was too late by then.

Come on. The coach should have to explain to his players that a holding call in that situation would be bad? Or that allowing a player to get behind you on a go route was the one thing you couldn't allow?

The players blew this one. End of story.

I agree 100%. He just looks so unatural on the sideline like hes just there.

I cant stand even looking at him hes just horrible.

You are so right. This is just so typical. Why should we expect anything else.

You go for one first down, even if you have to pass it. Yes, an incompletion stops the clock. But playing not to lose and having Tanner run it was stupid. He has "fresh" legs, but he's cold. It was just stupid game management.

You have to know what every second means, how every play impacts the clock. Garrett doesn't get that. He hasn't been able to grasp it for 3 years. It's not like this is his first time, just like this isnt' the first thread on the topic either. It's a habit, not a process.

When its crunch time and when Garrett needs to make a decision he fails. Honestly, the problem with his is that he plays it conservative way to earlier. Even when Detroit brings their safety up to the LOS, and Bryant has 1 on 1 coverage, we still try to run the ball. Thats playing NOT TO LOSE. Playing not to lose is a coaching problem which points back to Garrett. Garrett got his team in a situation to lose the game. Thats his fault at the end.

I find your opinion comical. coaching was not the problem today. far from it.

Time for him to go. We're cruising to another. 500 season... and we improved the O-line. We have two excellent receivers and a $100 million dollar QB. HOF tightend and yet our offense is GARBAGE.

I honestly think there is a chance he gets fired mid-season when Jerry finally grasps the reality of this. We're not going to win anything this year with a coach like that.
