Aikman says play calling is bizzare

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman couldn’t believe what he was seeing as Dallas turned away from its running game in the second half of Sunday’s loss to Green Bay.

Aikman said on KTCK-AM that the Cowboys’ running game was working well in the first half as Dallas built up a 23-3 lead, so he figured the Cowboys would keep running the ball in the second half to protect that lead. Instead, the Cowboys passed more than they ran in the second half and blew their lead.

“They were about to run Green Bay right out of the stadium,” Aikman said, via the Dallas Morning News. “The philosophy has always been you throw the ball early in games to build the lead, you run the ball late to win games. And I believe in that. That’s the way we did it in the ’90s. I think, by and large, that’s the way Jason Garrett would prefer to do it. But if there was ever a time that DeMarco Murray should have had 25 carries in a game, that was it. You’ve got a 23-point lead. And as it turns out, Eddie Lacy ran the ball almost twice as much as DeMarco Murray in the second half of that ballgame, which is pretty mind-boggling. It was as bizarre a loss as I’ve ever witnessed.

I think the magic 8 ball could have called a better game. It really is crazy how poorly Jason gets the flow of a game...he really always has struggles with it.

Another example of JG failing miserably at game management. But hey, just blame the QB. Ignore the horrific coaching and defense.

Give Troy the headset for a game...would have to be better.

Anyone with football sense could see what a disaster the play-calling was last Sunday. Like Aikman said, we were about to run GB out of the stadium. i don't care if GB showed 10 in the box. They still never proved to stop the run.

Do teams suddenly stop passing on our abysmal pass defense because we play more coverage?????

According to coach Jones, they had stacked 9 guys in the box after halftime, so we had to make those adjustments...

The play calling in the second half was bizarre.

Troy and Aikman are good friends. I wonder what "I think, by and large, that’s the way Jason Garrett would prefer to do it...." is supposed to mean. Just a throwaway comment to butter up the next criticism? Or what?

Troy and Aikman are good friends, huh? Who would have thunk it?

I read it to mean that tTroy thinks that Jason know what he should do but Troy is confused as to why Jason didnt call the game the way it should have been called.

To me, this is one of Jason's greatest failings as an OC and/or HC. He tends to see things as black or white with no other outcomes possible. Specifically I believe Jason believes that eight or more in the box means a running play absolutely cannot work. Period. Exclamation point.

In Jason's world, seven or less in the box means the playbook is wide open - run or pass as the situation seems to dictate. Eight or more in the box means it absolutely must be a pass, no exceptions. I mean, it is obvious every Sunday that running plays with more than seven in the box absolutely never work. Right? ;)

I also believe that he and Wade have drilled this into Tony's head for the last six plus years. This plus Tony's natural gunslinger inclination to throw on every down along with his complete freedom to check out of any play at the LOS results in disasters like we saw Sunday.

I also believe this is why we have heard several defensive players since 2008 say that this is one of the easiest offenses to prepare for. They know they can force a pass play simply by bringing an eighth man into the box before Tony surveys the defensive alignment and then jumping back into their called defense before the snap. Our refusal/inability to get the snap off before 1-3 seconds are left on the play clock also feeds into this.

Just my $0.02. :D

Aikman should be HC no question.

He seems to understand the problems pretty well..

I think he would do really well if he wants the job.
