Again, you have to deal with the dead money. 8.5 million accelerated against the cap already. Even if you sign him for 4 million that is a total of 12.5 million. His original cap hit was 16 million...

He isn't going to be brought back.
People are overfocusing on 2014.

If they had kept him at 12.25M, and then cut him after the season, the total cap hit for 2014 and 2015 combined would be 12.25M + 8.5M.

If they brought him back at 6M, then the total cap hit over 2014 and 2015 would be
6M + 8.5M.

The 2014 cap hit would be bigger now, but the total multiple year cap hit would be lower by the amount of the reduced base salary. A bigger cap hit in 2014 is not really an issue because they can restructure other contracts to push money into the future. It does not matter if the money delayed into the future was Ware's original prorated amounts for the future years OR taking all of Ware's hit now and delaying the cap hit of some other contracts.

Ware has been contacted by six playoff teams already apparently.

I guess they don't know he is a bum who sucks.

yea, i also get tired of the people who either love or hate any given player and take this "game" so personally. ware was an outstanding player for us for 9 years and did all he could to help. yes he got older and yes, less productive. we simply couldn't afford that $ for that production.

that's all there is to it.

now if some of these playoff teams can give in the $4-5 mil range, i could see ware taking it for the shot at a ring and ya know what? i hope he gets it. i do think he needs to go to a 3-4 D and get back to where he did perform and maybe even then more situational in his use.

best of luck to a true cowboy.

Very sad to see him go especially considering the teams we are up against next season

No way in hell I am reading through 27 pages of this. If Jerry does not address Ware's replacement in free agency,he just tipped his hand to the entire league what our #1 target is in the draft.

In the short term, probably not. But in the long term, definitely. This team needs to continue to get younger and become more cost effective.

Some people seem to be forgetting the cap hit, even with him gone, plus the money paid to him at release. Bringing him back would add back onto that.
The 8.5M in unrealized prorated money had to hit the cap at some point. If he had stayed, it would have been spread out over a few years. Once he was cut it accelerated into 2014.

If they were max restructured on all contracts, then it would be an issue, but they're not. They can just restructure another contract to offset the accelerated money from Ware's contract. If he were to re-sign for less than his original 12.25M, then any money saved reduces the multiple year cumulative cap hit.

completely yes.

typically we would have extended him with a huge signing bonus.

we finally made a cut when it was needed.

I get not wanting to pay him the salary he was slated for this year, but this made a unit of weakness even weaker. If we extend Spencer and Hatcher with this money that's going to irritate me. Ware still has a lot of football left in him and could have helped the team. Spencer with the injury he is coming off of and the fact Hatcher thus far has only produced one year, aren't players I am specifically excited about. Not sure what to think other than that. Just a disappointing development.

now, if this is a change in philosophy, it's just a matter of time before Austin is shown the door

I don't think so. I'm surprised however.

I see a team that has hit rock bottom and were strapped for cash to sign anybody. I just hope this doesn't buy JG another year if this team goes 4-12. If Romo is healthy however I don't think that kind of season is ever going to happen.

Marshall Faulk thinks Ware will be back at a much lower price after he finds out not a big market for him.

Sounded like Casserly was saying this. Faulk was saying Ware likely thinks his only chance at winning is to leave

When they moved to the 4-3 the writing was on the wall on Ware's eventual release. He was undersized to play that position in today's NFL. It showed in his lack of productivity and his many injuries. I'm sure he'll have a couple or 3 more solid years if he ends up on a 3-4 team. Good luck to you Ware.

The future years don't pertain to this year. Ware's value for future years is even lower now. The reality is some team will pay him more than he is worth and then cut him at the end of the year, and he'll probably end up retiring.

One can only hope..it's a step in the right direction

I'm not a fan of Jerry's especially at draft time and when he makes trades. But I have to admit that today Jerry took a big step up in my estimation given the circumstances.

First, I am a strong fan of Ware. He was one of my three top favorites on the team. I loved what Ware brought to the table. He was always a hundred percenter (I know it isn't a word but you know what I mean) and a difference maker.
Secondly, I expect Ware to have a great year this year, but it isn't worth keeping him because the Cowboys would be stuck with a time when he wouldn't have a great year.
Thirdly, I know cap wise there is no way the Boys could justify his salary for this year.

Fourthly, I can imagine this was one of the toughest decision Jerry has had to make since he owned the Cowboys. He is very loyal to a fault and I underline fault. Yet for one time anyway, I will stand up and applaud him for making a very tough decision personally as well as for the team.

I'm not going to diss him about what he might or might not do in the draft or free agency until it happens. I didn't expect him to do what he did today and for the first time in a long time, I have hope regarding the decisions Jerry will make in the future. I know you are saying, Stephen or Garrett or whomever made the decision. Well, isn't that something we should applaud and should give us hope that Jerry made the decision to listen to those he trusts?
