I don't approve signing this guy. He's the quintessential athlete whose surroundings play a heavy influence on his play.

When he was at the UT country club, fans used to call him SHElton b/c he was big but soft. Then he goes to Chicago where defense is a fabric of that franchise and his talent flourishes.

I don't see that happening again in Dallas. Not with Jerry meddling, Jason providing nothing, very few strong leaders in the locker room...Marinelli is here but its not enough. I don't trust this guy to bring it like he did in Chicago.

Dude he's a baller, Chicago's prior rep for defense means nothing as we all saw last year when melton was gone they got slaughtered.

We aren't going to be broken if he doesn't sign but we could really use his services.

Sure he is a risk. But aren't all Texas players that way?

Melton is a risk...but so is heading into the draft with Nick Hayden and Terrell McClain on top of your DT depth chart.

I just have a feeling Melton is a Cowboy about 24 hours from now.

No more 5 year contracts. Especially for a guy coming off a big injury.

Trust me.. and others..if the Cowboys can get Melton for 5 years at 25 mil the acl injury will be an afterthought. This is 2014 and that is an injury that can be overcome and full reco0very expected.

Great point. Advances in sport medicine have seen ACL injuries become far less of a threat to a player's career or future production. Adrian Peterson is Exhibit A, but he's not the only one.

If this is your stance, then anyone that comes to Dallas will not be any good.
Not anyone. I gave a specific reason why for Melton.
Yes, whenever I evaluate a NFL vet, I put a great deal of stock in nicknames he was given in college by drunk students.
He might be a vet now but I still think that's who he is at his heart and indicative of his play in a country club culture similar to ours. He went to Chicago where they preach defense and had stellar leaders on that side of the ball and he flourished. I doubt it happens here but of course you guys are going to fall back on Saint Marinelli saving everyone.

I know this will be a draft to rebuild the whole line. But not getting Melton pretty much makes DT a first round lock. It takes away the option of an OL or S or even DE.

I would rather have the draft come to us rather than be desperate for a position as specific.

There are some really good DTs projected for the second round that we may look back on in 2-3 years and see they were better than some of the 1st rd projections

Bears had several injuries last season, Lovie/Marinelli gone, and their leader Urlacher retired. We're not winning anything with or without him next season.

I don't trust UT players. I say this as an alum. He was also arrested in college for drunk driving.

Historically, D-linemen have a VERY high bust rate. The list is almost too long to fathom. This is why the Cowboys are making Melton such a priority. Fans just can't assume a rookie is going to come in here and start and everything will be okay. Melton has played at a Pro Bowl level in this league.

Oh hell to the no! You said that if Melton came here, with Jerry meddling, Garrett showing nothing, yada, yada, yada...

So, what makes you think that any other player could be a good fit if Jerry meddles, Garrett has nothing to offer, yada...

What would be the difference?

Agreed on Sutton in the 2nd over Jernigan in the 1st

I have a feeling Sutton will be the next "not quick twitch enough" DT we pass on. He has been getting a lot of negative press lately after his Pro Day. Some (like Brandt) are suggesting he may have dropped out of the first three rounds entirely.

We will see.

One way or another, we will see if Jerry Jones is throwing in the towel or not. Melton is a hail mary in FA right now. Bow out in the bidding, he is conceding that he is not going to spend.

Injured players don't get 5 years. 3 years most.

Jernigan is a much, much better prospect than Sutton.

Agreed there. Sutton's qualities that worry me is that you should be peaking coming out of college, not tanking. He was too fat in his final season and now he is trying to lose weight and succeeding, but still nobody is impressed that he is explosive.
