I really hope we don't get Melton. I'd much, much rather have Donald, or even Jernigan.

I get what you are saying completely. It's smart and a legit move. I'm just not sold on money to Melton.

I don't like it either, frankly. A moderate deal would be fine, but we're going to overpay. Probably significantly.

Hopefully it nets us a good player or two in the draft in the long run we might otherwise have missed on. Another Terrence Williams, for example, and I'd feel pretty ok with it.

Anybody else slightly concerned that he didn't do much 3 games (he hurt his knee the 4th quarter of the 3rd game) last year?

No sacks, no forced fumbles, only 5 tackles in the three games of 2013.

Maybe a statistical anomaly and he was about to 'get his sacks', however, I wouldn't discount the impact of a declining Peppers, no more Urlacher, etc on the defense.

Is Melton a player you build a DL line around?

Also note he missed games in 2013 (obviously) AND 2012 (2 games) AND 2011 (1 game).

His sacks also declined from 2011 to 2012 (7 to 6)

Maybe all these concerns are overblown, however, when you combine it with the off the field stuff it really makes you wonder if this is a guy that $8m+ year should be given to.

Yes, why have a proven pro bowler when you can have an unproven rook at a position with an extremely high bust rate!

I don't think that Donald has an extremely high bust rate. However, signing Melton to big bucks would be a terrible move and a bad gamble. I would rather put my chances on a rook with a more than favorable rookie contract than a vet coming off an injury possibly signing a multi million dollar contract.

Why not both?

If we can sign Melton now, that would greatly increase our versatility in the draft. Us fans were absolutely dying to draft Aaron Donald to be our 3-Tech, but now seems as if he won't even make it to pick 16. Some people were even suggesting trading up to get Donald, giving up valuable picks in a deep draft.

If we sign Melton, who excels playing 3-Tech, it won't make us as desperate, and we can focus on Defensive Ends, Guards and Offensive Tackles.

Personally, I would save the resources and look to the draft to rebuild the line.

This may take several years to do with reference to draft talent but that is the best long term solution.

I completely understand the pause with regard to Melton, the behavior issues and injury concerns.

Idgit is making a good point, signing Melton allows us more flexibility in the draft.

Donald is an undersized DT who underperformed against tough competition. He most certainly could bust.

This approach doesn't bother me at all. What many are hoping for is a name that we can sign now that will make us feel a little better inside about our Dline, make us feel better about still having a chance to make a run at the playoffs and see what happens. We're all debating / arguing about what to do because the team has backed itself into a corner with past decisions.

If it takes a signing like Melton to make some fans feel good about going into next season that's fine. What I'm looking for is doing things right, period, like cutting Ware. Lets draft right and not let a position or a player hold our emotions hostage.

That's definitely best case scenario. He's 27. You hope to get some preinjury production from him and hit in draft in other spots because you filled need.

On the other side you fear that you throw cash, he lost some burst and you skip on someone in draft. That or he gets in trouble after getting money. But I'm more concerned with recovery.

When in Rome.

I think Jernigan could play the 1 or 3 here and could slide into the NT or DE role in a 3-4. He's much stronger at the point of attack than Donald. He's an elite run defender.

that is a valid point. Not sure that he is stronger but he is a bigger man.

He's immature man. He just got arrested again. He hasn't changed. Who tears an ACL and then gets in a bar fight? I don't trust this guy.

lol. That statement makes me think. I have been on the fence with this guy. Las thing I want to see is Jerry go on a big spending spree.

Historically, D-linemen have a VERY high bust rate. The list is almost too long to fathom. This is why the Cowboys are making Melton such a priority. Fans just can't assume a rookie is going to come in here and start and everything will be okay. Melton has played at a Pro Bowl level in this league.

Yeah, that's kind of the point. There a bunch of good prospects but who is to say the 1st round projections don't bust and some ranked almost as good in the 2nd don't end up great.
I know you have to trust your scouts but I've always stated the obvious, college success has never guaranteed NFL success.

Everyone who's second guessing us talking to Melton... Do you think Marinelli has a good idea of what Melton can contribute?
