Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins: Dallas players are the problem; Cowboys defense won’t be any better

I agree, to a large extent. The players were the problem.

There was a lot of injuries and usually, the first year in a new system isn't going to be that great, particularly when you switch from a 34 to a 43. However, Hayden, Sims, Wynn, Kyle Wilber, Heath, Webb, Drake Nevis, Edgar Jones, etc. are names that were, in large part... the problem.

Ratliff not playing was a problem.
Spencer not playing was a problem.
Demarcus Ware, the way he played, was a problem. Certainly not part of the solution.
Guys that played too early like Wilcox, Webb, Heath, were the problem.

No bones about it... Dallas needs new players on defense. Big time.

Getting rid of Ware is part of the solution. He isn't very good anymore and paying him huge dollars would have been part of the problem, not the solution. Bringing in Henry Melton, if he is healthy, will help a ton. The 3-tech DT spot is vital to Marinelli and Melton is certainly a good one. McCLain and Mincey are both big upgrades over the type of players we had on the line last year, and as part of a rotation, they should be part of the solution.

Getting a talented DE and DT in the draft, is very important and if they can manage it, then having Mincey and McClain come off the bench turns them from so-so signings to good signing because they are very good bench players. Only so-so as starters though, IMO.

If they manage a couple of guys like Donald and Crichton from the first two rounds of the draft, it could really change the whole defense. That's why I think it is so important to move around and get the guys you target.

Dallas could have Melton, Mincey, McClain, Donald, and Crichton new on the DL, and that alone would make a big difference.

There are some good guys on that defense... but they need a good bit of new guys to add to them.

So, I agree with Jenkins. He just isn't looking very deep though if he thinks they aren't getting new players.

Very well said

I'll give Jenkins a mulligan on this one. He's new, so he probably doesn't know that the teams in the NFC East don't need any extra incentive to get up for each other. If he must badmouth the Cowboys, he might as well do it in the mirror. He's still going to get torched by Dez two games a year.

The sad thing is that I don't think he was trying to bad mouth the Cowboys. I think he got asked a question and he gave a direct, honest answer.

Probably about 90% of this board would agree with his response, so I don't think it was trash talking.

doubt it ... they will just roll coverage to the only side Dez plays on and he will disappear. Ive seen it happen.

Hold up, hold up. Sean Lee and Bruce Carter are blue chip prospects. Of course they have to stay healthy...but EVERY body in the NFL is one play away from being on the sidelines...but because of the talent and youth of both of these guys...you cannot sign/draft over them? Carr was the top free agent CB 2 years ago...Claiborne was the top CB prospect coming out of the draft 2 years ago (let me also add that anyone compared to Deion is looked at as a once in a generation prospect) Scandrick is a top tier slot CB (there is no debating that). As far as Safety is concerned...well Barry Church is a solid SS. Not the best...not the worst...I would say middle of the road. FS...there is an obvious question mark there. But we spent a 3rd round pick on a kid last year...should we draft/sign over him already?

Now we get to DL. There are obvious holes to fill. But not every defense can have steak at every position. Lets just say Melton/Hatcher cancel each other out. When you consider what we actually got from Ware on the filed (not his reputaion)....it will not be hard for someone else to replicate that...in fact...I think Selvie was our best edge rusher last year. Crawford was a 3rd round pick a few years ago and was considered to be a future cornestone piece before he got hurt. So I am exicited to see him. The rest are a bunch of hungry guys that will be rotational guys...which is important in this defense.

Will it get fixed over night? No. Will it be better than last year? If it is not.....a lot of guys would have failed. I am not a fan of Jerry Jones. Cannot wait until he is no longer running this team. But the Carr's. Lee's, Carter's, Claibonres, Melton, Scandrick's of the world need to play to their contract/draft status/potential. Then you need the young guys like Crawford, Wilcox to emerge. And then you need to hit on 1 or 2 defensive players in the draft. So like EVERY team in the NFL....we have holes to plug. But this is one time where I think the defense was managed correctly this offseason. And there is enough talent on that side of the ball to not be the worst defense in the history of the NFL. If these guys don't have enough pride to not have a repeat of last year...then the culture in Dallas is as bad as I thought it was (and hoping it is not)

I never got the Claiborne/Deion comparison. He doesn't have 4.2 speed. That alone makes the comparison moot. You can compare me to Deion, chance are I wont have his NFL game.

There is a difference between college prospect/blu chipper and actaul NFL game perfomance. Carr has underperfromed, maybe he has been ok/average, but he was paid to be a top 5 corner - he also doesn't have that kind of speed to make up for mistakes. Carter loafs, getting benched for Sims is an indictment. Barry Chrurch is a below average safety. He would be fine paired with a top 3 safety, but he has no speed or ball skills. good against the run and tackler. FS is an abortion, though I do hold optimism for Wilcox. That said, last year I can maybe argue 1 worse safety combo trotted out each week and that was Washington.

Pride alone isn't helping Jeff Heath and Barry chrurch against Drew Brees. I posted the history of our safety postion since 2000 and once the Woodson/R Williams era ended, it has been heding toward room clearing fecal stench.

The DL was another indictment of the FO. They were getting older, which correates to more injuries, and over-evaluated the current talent level. Just like we were told the OL would be better in 2012 when everyone knew it was , trash...many weren't expecting the DL to be great last year...Hatcher was the only overperformer.

Not sure he knows what a good defense looks like since he has been a core member of the Saints but (insert photo of blind squirrel)- he is possibly right. It's simpler to explain it off as he did then to draw the string from our draft missteps and contracts and free agency blunders and how it translated to the field of play.

I am quite pleased to learn that he is an Eagle and I imagine that our QB and WRs are as well.

Oh well, join the club. Everybody and their momma is a Cowboy expert. Like Jerry said, the best show on TV.

No doubt the Boys need an influx of young talent/depth on what was the NFL's worst defense last year. Not too hard to see that.

Ironically though...somewhere right now, Jarius Byrd is too busy to talk. He's still counting his money after being the 'big name player' the Saints brought in to 'help them out' by replacing Malcolm Jenkins.

How is he a clown exactly? What exactly did he say that wasn't true there?

1) the second he put ink to contract with that stupid green eagle logo on it, he became a clown
2) that he knows zero about the division and chooses to take a shot, makes him a clown
3) why didn't he say it when it happened? clown

I'm not clowning around either

my God, when did fans of the cowboys become this "sheep-like" to be ok that someone from a rival team takes a shot across the bow? Who cares if we sucked on defense? I feel like going into a local bar and picking a fight with some eagles fans (I live in eagles territory)...

Outside of losing on game day, the toughest part of our lengthy demise has been the inability to retaliate against the trash-talking,,, anybody from this guy Jenkins to that POS Brandon Jacobs can talk smack and there isn't a thing we (or the Cowboys) can do about it.

Oh, hell to the yes!

Attitude.

I know that talking trash is one thing. And not talking back is another. But, I would hope they find some players that are nasty...and carry a big stick! Or at least represent the Star.

No ****!

Can we please get some junkyard dog mean players on the Cowboys? Someone who will see something like this being said, circle the Eagles game on the calendar and make the guy pay.

You come into the NFC East bad-mouthing the Dallas defense, then you had damn well better keep your head on a swivel.

Please, please find some players like that. Now that Demarcus "let me help you up" Ware is gone, maybe we can get some attitude on defense.
