Davon Coleman waived for Pellerin

It's been mentioned a few times, what does JAG stand for in this case? I'm relatively new to football forum talk

Being from Canada I am encouraged that you have never heard the term. As others have said it stands for 'just another guy.'

It can be meaningful in the context of statistics. You create a baseline of a 'replacement level player' ie the level of the player that can be found in street free agency during the season when rosters are set. This is much easier to determine in baseball where you have 40 and 25 man rosters. From that standard you can compare how much better a player is than that level.

Unfortunately the way that it is used here and in the states in general is an emotional generalization to denote middling average or whatever emotional quality you want to place on a player. It's a lazy man's thinking.

There are plenty of players on the roster that I don't happen to like, or whose potential I think is likely to never be realized. Even more guys who I think--or thought--did have potential and who never delivered. The difference between us is that I realize that's the case for every team, and that that's how the process works: you get guys you think might work out and then see if they do. I don't begrudge players for having the audacity to be on the roster when we don't draft well enough or manage resources well enough to have found someone better.

That fact that you won't appreciate it when a college free agent not only earns a roster spot, but earns playing time, and extension from the team, and then is picked up by another playoff contender to compete for a starting role on their squad, too, is only your stubbornness talking. The good news is, increasingly, I think everybody here knows that. And your other buddies are too busy off enjoying the winning season elsewhere to engage with you in your fan-baiting.

You can continue to spin this into me not liking UDFAs all you want it won't make it any less wrong. But I get it. You're desperately searching for some firm footing here.

It's not about a blanket statement of UDFAs. It's about this particular UDFA. I was the one liking Tony Romo while this board was being told he was lollipopping all this throws and everyone was focused on Drew Henson.

It was me that preached the virtues of signing the undrafted Miles Austin and was patient with his development while most figured Sam friggin Hurd was the better option. He had better hands. I remember those threads.

There's a lot of UDFAs I like, but there are a lot more that I don't like.

I refuse to pretend your belief that a ham and egger like Coleman was a potential down the road starter was a legitimate thought. He was a roster filler on a very bad defensive team.

So excuse me if I point and laugh at you some more.

And hold on to your hat. I can smell the Jack Crawford cut coming. Sometimes you just can't wait for these guys to reach their immense potential.

Go Cowboys, though.

I think your troubles with evaluating NFL talent, is you can obviously judge 1st round talent, most NFL fans can. But you seem to struggle somewhat with evaluating lower round and UDFA NFL talent. You have to be able to evaluate potential, and how a player evolves, with weight training, and proper coaching, not to mention just a young player maturing naturally, basically being to for see that player after a year or two of being in a pro system.

For me, it's not necessarily not liking an UDFA. It's the fact that this board is so quick to anoint them (see Jeff Heath and the oh my god he's Bill Bates posts).Tony Romo and Miles Austin are the exception not the rule.

The fact that Jerry has missed so badly on some draft picks and big contracts, creates an environment where there is so much more opportunities here for UDFA's. Still, Undrafted Free Agency is an excellent opportunity to find depth and maybe a future starter. I just think we need to stop pretending every UDFA we sign is going to be a star. Barry Church is incredibly overrated IMO. Jeff Heath is awful. Davon Coleman is decent but not needed. Tyler Patmon is a solid #5 CB. Cole Beasley is a solid #4 or #5 WR. Ron Leary is a steal as long as his knee holds up. UDFA's should be depth and every once in while, a surprise find. It should not be a way of life in regards to building a roster in the NFL.

Could be that you just have no idea what you are yapping about. Yup, I think that about sums it up.

The Henson v. Romo offseason--where Henson was allocated to NFLE after the poor training camp showing--was in 2005, Risen. You joined in Jan of 2006, right? Drew Henson wasn't even on the Cowboys roster in 2006. He was a Viking.

Perhaps you're thinking about a bunch of great posts you made on the topic under another user name? If so, let me know which one it was so I can look them up to see if they ever really happened, ok?

Perhaps you don't have the slightest clue of what you're talking about and there's a whole legion of people reading this laughing at you right now.

Yeah, 2006. That's when I discovered this board.

This thread turned into one big snore-fest.
What is even going on in here?

So...it was your 'other' account where you had all these great posts, we're supposed to believe? I'll check there, then.

It's not ldgit that's being laughed at by a legion of people.

Still looking for anything that would support what he says under his old username. I'll let you know if I'm able to find anything. :)

You're schooling him

Please in your own words explain how he is 'schooling him.' I bet you cannot do it without looking a clueless and instead will ignore or bluster in response.

Not only is your post juvenile, but it is completely baseless. If you are convinced by chest thumping and binary all or nothing arguments on player evaluations then that says a whole lot about you and not all that much about Idj.

No wonder you explain it so well

I see you left out the part of it being an emotional generalization.

You don't seem to grasp the nuance of categorization and semantics. You prefer the binary it is or it isn't. There are many like you but reality doesn't work like that very human construct everywhere. For example in what people mean when they say the word "JAG.'
