Cowboys - D.J. Swearinger Backup Safety option **Claimed by Tampa Bay**

Love that sig.

BTW, That's also a great example of a certain RB running the wrong way....lol
Not saying to take CJ, but he probably blows right through that hole and is already deep into the secondary...lol. Hopefully DMC can do that.

If one of you guys have studied his NFL game footage, then lets see a detailed analysis of it; otherwise, some one-liners are meaningless fodder.

Don't jump my back. You're the one who keeps making the college comparison. I was simply replying to your question.

I haven't studied his tape, but I have seen almost every Houston game the last two years and what I saw was a safety who is great between the numbers and within 10-15 yards. Big hitter and good timing. Made some good reads and good breaks. However, anything outside of that really exposed him. He was gashed down the seem consistently and he bit on PA a significant number of times. He looks to avoid contact/blockers when coming up against the run. He will run around/away from them and open running lanes. When he does make a tackle, he doesn't wrap up, he always goes for the big hit.

Granted, that's not from studying the tape, just from the 30 or so games I watched the last two years. Take that all with a grain of salt though, cause I am one of the few who actually likes and wants Church on the team. I've thought, and been very vocal that I believe Wilcox was the biggest deficiency at safety for two years now. I don't think Wilcox is any better on the field than Swearinger, but I also don't think Swearinger represents an upgrade at the FS position. Not based on how we currently like to play one high so much.

As I said before, if Swearinger would be willing to play ST, I would put in a waiver claim. That would take some investigating though and, given his attitude and demeanor towards his Houston Coaches, I don't know that Garrett would even want to invest the time to investigate.

He'd make for a better OLB than a Safety.

5'10 208 is not an NFL LB'r. He played CB/S at South Carolina. He is just too slow 4.65 - 4.67 40 time and that is a SS, only. He does have excellent short area quickness 4.11 short shuttle. Many scouts raved Swearinger as a Top CB in college. i do like him as a SS. He is passionate - but must be a nucklehead. How else does one get CUT from the Texans?

If you watched any Houston games then you have seen way more of Swearinger than most of the people in this thread. If you watched 30 games then you should have an informed opinion. All I'm asking for is an informed opinion. That does not guaranteed being correct, but it is an informed opinion. Most people make absolute type comments and have never seen him play. They just go by a few tidbits from the media and form an absolute opinion and start bashing other opinions despite the fact that their opinion is an un-informed opinion.

I hear you, man. Yeah, I haven't seen every game, but I've seen at least 13-14 of their games/year the last two years. I'm sure one of the guys will do the All-22 and post their thoughts.

I think Swearinger could be an eventual replacement for Church, but that is dependent on his ability to sit and learn while working on his attitude and being a ST ace.

I watch a lot of Texan games too. If I had to compare him to a recent player, it would be a Jenkins type with less talent. He has his moments but also gets toasted often. His immaturity on and off the field is not worth it IMO, I hear that he is a bad influence on other players.

Houston(O'Brien) was absolutely making a statement with his cut but at the same time has been trying to trade him. I see a guy who isn't a team player and that will not fit in with what Garrett is trying to do.

I don't know about that. Jenkins had very good coverage ability but no desire to get better and couldn't stay healthy. Swearinger reminds me more of Roy Williams with a crappy attitude. LOL

You don't have to see all of his games or the All-22, just the fact that you've seen him play gives you and informed opinion.

I have no idea about his actual attitude. I know he had the 1 off-field issue about not paying for some auto modifications, but there are not major criminal issues that I know about.

I would expect some other team to claim him anyway. If the Cowboys were to claim him, then I would go back and review the All-22.

yea, big hitter for sure. Just saying his coverage skills were lesser than Jenkins but reminds me of him by side-tackling sometimes when the bigger boys head straight for him.

Oh, we can agree on that. At least with Jenkins, he was in a position where tackling ability is probably the third or fourth most important skill. For a safety, if you're unwilling to tackle, you don't have a spot on my team. Not only that, but Swearinger will bail out and leave gaping holes if he sees a lineman or TE coming his way. He likes to run around blockers. That's a no-no in the NFL. That's bush league.

Pass we have enough SS on this team...

and enough possible knuckleheads as well

This guy couldn't be any further from Darren Woodson.

Not a FS type for deep patrol....big hitter, but misses tackles....doesn't want to play special teams.

No thanks...we have 2 SS types....we need a FS

Have you watched his game footage?

I saw every game the guy played as a Texan, and I for one would much rather play against Swearinger than with him. He's a missed tackle, stupid penalty or blown assignment waiting to happen. The Texans have been trying to trade the guy for several weeks, and no one was willing to throw so much as a late round pick Houston's way for him. That, imho, speaks volumes.

Mincey had those questions and he came in and became a team leader in his first year. Some guys could be just poor fits with their coaching staff. I'm not sure but is that Texan's staff the same one that drafted him?

It is not. Wade was the DC in 2013 before giving way to Romeo Crennel prior to last season.

He played LB in the Nickel all the time in Houston, he'd have no issues doing the same anywhere else.

So the headline says he was claimed by the Bucs, they happen to play the same scheme.
