Honestly, I haven't studied any of the top players enough to say who is better than whom.
But let's assume the top 5 players are the best at their position and possible franchise players. Let's assume those players are:
Jalen Ramsey
Joey Bosa
Laremy Tunsil
Paxton Lynch
Jared Goff
You pick the quarterback and don't look back. The signal caller is the one position that determines the long-term success of your franchise. Look at the multiple Super Bowl winners or Super Bowl teams/losers (Pittsburgh, New England, Seattle, Indianapolis, New York) and the common denominator is 1.) quarterback and 2.) coaching.
Big Ben has been to three Super Bowls and has won two (one with Cowher as his coach which is why I put quarterback as No. 1 factor in attaining multiple Super Bowl appearances). Indianapolis went to two Super Bowls with Payton Manning, who also took Denver to a Super Bowl. Indy had Dungy as coach in its Super Bowl win and Caldwell as coach in its Super Bowl loss.
Russell Wilson has guided the Seahawks to two consecutive Super Bowls. See Eli Manning. And, of course, who can forget Tom Brady.
So ... if you have a chance to get a difference-maker at quarterback, you do so.
I'm assuming Cleveland will take Paxton Lynch, which would leave us Jared Goff, assuming no trades ahead of our pick.
Basically, what that says is that Romo has a two-year window to reach a Super Bowl. Otherwise, he's out. There's no way a team is going to let Jared Goff sit on the bench for three years. At the most, he'll spend two years as Romo's apprentice. But the third year, he'd better be starting.
After quarterback, you take Bosa or Tunsil because football is won on the lines. Ordinarily, you would want to protect your franchise quarterback with a LT so Tunsil would ordinarily be the pick. But we have a young Tyron Smith, who should man the LT spot for years to come. So Bosa would be the pick.I don't care if we have a LDE already. You still pick him because pass rushers are a premium, and you can always rotate him into the lineup and keep a fresh set of legs going after the quarterback.
So Goff would be my pick under the above scenario. But I'm not sure he's a franchise-type quarterback. However, if the Cowboys think he is, they shouldn't pass on him just because Jerry expects Romo to play another five years.
