So can someone explain why Tony Dungy is in again?

If Dungy wanted to coach again, would anyone want him here? I wouldn't and I bet a lot of folks wouldn't either. He had Manning in his prime and mustered one SB while the offense always performed better than his D, for the most part. I guess political correctness afflicts every industry and walk of life in today's world.

On the flip side, they give points for reputation and "team first" players and I'm thinking Troy Aikman when I write that. He didn't have the stats other great QB's did but people realized he sacrificed stats for team success and they didn't let stats be the sole factor for his selection.

That's fair, Dodger, but I think that you have to take into account his performance in the playoffs, as well. The guy was a straight up assassin in the post season. You can't put mediocre players like Lynn Swann and John Stallworth in the HOF based on their post season performances (and let's be honest, that's exactly what happened) and ignore a player like Aikman. Just my opinion.

lol, are you suggesting he's in the HOF only because he was a black?

I know you weren't referencing me in your post but you have to wonder how a guy that won one Super Bowl (Dungy) is in ahead of coaches who won multiple Super Bowls (Flores or Johnson) or a guy like Gil Brandt (who has 100 more impact on the history of the league). I don't know if I would go so far as to say it's a "black" thing but it's certainly devoid of any logic.

I've said it before and I reference it again. IMO, to be considered for the HOF you should have been the best or one of the best in the league for at least 4-5 years of your tenure in it. Dungy was never that.

True. I can't stand him but he does deserve to be a first ballot HOFer. They will vote him in next year.
The worst thing ever are the voters in baseball who say, "I won't vote him in the first time but I will vote him in on the second time". Makes zero sense and they should have there voting privilege taken from them.

I agree the whole "first ballot" thing is too overblown, and it's like there's a tier level for members. You're either in or your not.

While I can't believe that Dungy made it in the HOF, no where near a HOF coach imo. I also think that Lord Jimmy has no place in the HOF either. Just not a HOF coach, imo. Good coach, for sure. But no where near HOF worthy.

Owens is the common factor of the division in the locker rooms of the 2005 Eagles and the 2008 Cowboys, two #1 seeds the prior year that became major letdowns in major part to his Me-first attitude. Both teams were playoff teams their following years as well once Owens was removed. Terms like Cancer and Coach Killer were extreme the way they were thrown around regarding Owens but for his HOF stats he did contribute in a negative way on the field at times.

I agree that the criteria should be stricter. That being said, if that is your criteria, there are guys that have done much less than Dungy in there already that I'd think you'd have more of an issue with.

I would say that it's fair to say Dungy was considered "one of the best" head coaches in the NFL for 4-5 years though.

I get that people apparently feel he underperformed by winning 1 Superbowl with Peyton, however, let's not go too far in underplaying his impact on the league at all levels.

That's fair enough. I don't agree but I respect your opinion.

Because Dungy is a great guy who the media loves and TO is well TO. It is sad that the 2nd or 3rd best WR of all time cant get into the HOF on the first ballot.

I don't think he's talking about Dungy vs TO, he's talking about Dungy being in at all.

Dungy wasn't close to being one of the best coaches in his era in my opinion. He's always been a darling, and he's always been overrated. As an announcer, he's says a lot of dumb things, too, not that that counts for anything, but it always makes me wonder how he actually coached.

TO was never going to get in the HoF on the first ballot, and he's only got himself to blame for being a giant narcissistic team-last distraction. He's a great talent, though, and a sure thing to get in at some point. Unfortunately.

I just don't get how a guy with stats that great isn't considered a first ballot guy. I mean T.o. Is top 5 all time in td's behind guys like Rice and Emmitt and he's number 2 all time behind Jerry Rice in receiving yards. The media needs to be ashamed for letting the off the field stuff get in the way of what the stats show.

And if the media in the past was like it is now we probably would thing of many HOF players differently. Take Broadway Joe....partying / flashy/ boaster ... celebrated..... today many are berated for the same behaviors...

It seems to me someone in TO's position will often be hard pressed to overcome the negative aspects of his career. Being a purveyor of dissent and discontent seldom goes unnoticed.

Unfortunately I did not make it. CONGRATS to the 2016 HOF CLASS. Thanks to ALL MY FANS for ur unwavering love & support. #ONLYGODCANJUDGEME

I like TO's statement. It was classy. As you well know, not everything TO did in his career was classy, so it's good to see him be mature about this. I'd bet he gets in the HOF in the future.
