Both guys have amazing pursuit skills and will erase routes over the middle if healthy.

But what separates the two is getting after the QB. This is a dimension I didn't think Jaylon Smith added, but he looks like a natural rushing off the edge and he's a violent blitzer.

Did we just kill two birds with one stone with this pick? Base LB and Pass Rushing DE on 3rd downs?

I couldn’t be the only one who was thinking that Notre Dame might not have utilized Smith as well as they should have after watching the video. He did things in these clips that I haven’t seen from an edge rusher in blue and gold in a very long time.

I watched a few games of his tonight and what really stood out to me was how easily he got off of blocks.

he cold god Please work a miracle cause we can possibly have 2 to 3 really really good players

He's 20 years old. From all indications he'll have to redshirt 2016 but will be good to go once his recovery is done. So we'll be getting a 21 year old super freak who will captain this defense for a decade when he comes back. This kid is cut from the same athletic cloth as Von Miller, with off the charts leadership and intangibles.

Don't fall victim to instant gratification, drafting players is for the long haul. This kid will be great

Jaylon is a great player; reading reports, some had him going 3-4 round due to his injury. I feel Jones was too quick to grab him and maybe could have grabbed him in the 3rd at least.

Other than that, its possible the Cowboys are very confident of Jaylons progress and that maybe that info was leaked and another team was rumored to grab him first.

I don't know, but something odd had to occur for Jones to grab him in the second with some real good defensive players still on the board.

Let's all hope Jaylon:

Makes a full recovery.
Can still play like he did in college and better.
Doesn't end up with a glass knee that keeps him on and off the bench.
And that other players won't be targeting his knee.

The Patriots were going to draft him in the 2nd.

The guy is a beast and is so quick off the block. Those who are upset about the pick because he may not play till 2017 don't see the big picture. We basically took our 2nd round pick and turned it into top 5 pick in the 1st round of 2017 + 1 year under his belt studying. In my opinion that is worth the risk.

The Pats had eyes for him and Jerry said No Soup For Yous.

Jerry specifically mentioned in the presser last night about his ability to rush the passer...

Rumors are the Patriots wanted him at 61 (2nd round). They traded that pick to get more picks after we took Smith.

It's not that he's injured. It's that he may not be the same after his injury heals.
As an aside, I guess the Cowboys are building a team to contend when Romo hits 40, just like Denver did with Peyton Manning. o_O

Common rumor or talk going around.

With all due respect, it just seems like whenever there's a reach, the "rumor" is that someone was going to nab said player.

Nevertheless, I hope the pick pans out. But I also hope we get some picks today worthy of starting or contributing this year.

You need to get a clue and read more...The Patriots were all set to get him at the end of the second. We either get him where we did or lose him forever.

Why is he a reach? Because the media said so? Dude would have been a top 5 pick if healthy.

As far as him being a nickel DE...it's not a bad idea, but we'd be wasting elite LB cover skills.

One of the NE beat writers said the same thing. NE was strongly looking at Smith in Rd 2.

And it's really not surprising. Even leading up to the draft on this very board when people asked where SMith would go some people here even said he'd likely go sooner than thought as someone like Carolina or NE or Arizona would take him earlier and just stash him because they could.

Wrong, the Pats were looking to grab him in the second.
