What Jaylon Smith brings that Myles Jack doesn't

I meant NFI. He didn't suffer an injury while involved in a NFL activity so he's eligible for the NFI. Functionally no different then the PUP other then the fact that on the NFI they don't have to be paid, but I imagine that he will be paid regardless of what list he's on.

If we're talking about Jaylon Smith, he ripped his knee in a bowl game...definitely football-related. Am I missing something here? (Entirely possible)

Duh...never mind. Just reread your post and I understand your point now. I was thing "football-related" on his injury while you were saying it didn't occur in the NFL. I stand corrected. :)

Jaylon is a great player; reading reports, some had him going 3-4 round due to his injury. I feel Jones was too quick to grab him and maybe could have grabbed him in the 3rd at least.

Other than that, its possible the Cowboys are very confident of Jaylons progress and that maybe that info was leaked and another team was rumored to grab him first.

I don't know, but something odd had to occur for Jones to grab him in the second with some real good defensive players still on the board.

Let's all hope Jaylon:

Makes a full recovery.
Can still play like he did in college and better.
Doesn't end up with a glass knee that keeps him on and off the bench.
And that other players won't be targeting his knee.
Patriots were going to take him in the 2nd.

NFI or IR will be an interesting decision and will tell you a lot about what the doctor thinks about his progress.

The only update that matters. The end. Hoping that he's healthy enough by end of year. Would love to see him get some snaps being 100% healthy and having time to learn along the way.

Both guys have amazing pursuit skills and will erase routes over the middle if healthy.

But what separates the two is getting after the QB. This is a dimension I didn't think Jaylon Smith added, but he looks like a natural rushing off the edge and he's a violent blitzer.

Did we just kill two birds with one stone with this pick? Base LB and Pass Rushing DE on 3rd downs?

One major difference is that Jack will engage and fight off blockers, whereas Smith will try to dance around blockers and take himself out of the play, a lot like Bruce Carter.

Personally I've been on the Jack wagon & was excited he was still available. I think he's an absolute stud, but Smith isn't a letdown - well except that I wasn't even thinking about him.

I expect Smith to be a regular highlight reel type of player once he gets back. Besides the other 2 LBs are on 1 year deals.

Actually guys, since he did not injure his knee in the NFL it would be considered NFI. IIRC we had a couple of draft picks in recent history that were coming back from college injuries and were put on NFI.

Why is he a reach? Because the media said so? Dude would have been a top 5 pick if healthy.

As far as him being a nickel DE...it's not a bad idea, but we'd be wasting elite LB cover skills.

You answered your own question.

One of the NE beat writers said the same thing. NE was strongly looking at Smith in Rd 2.

And it's really not surprising. Even leading up to the draft on this very board when people asked where SMith would go some people here even said he'd likely go sooner than thought as someone like Carolina or NE or Arizona would take him earlier and just stash him because they could.

Fair enough.

How can you so confidently refute this sir? Many have stated it. Just because we haven't heard it directly from the mouth of hoodie doesn't mean it's not true.

I'm just asking how he knows this. And who is many?

Defense has the potential to be scary in a few years when some young guys come into their own: Gregory, Lawrence, Collins, Smith, Jones. Hopefully our post-Romo era can start off with a well-balanced team.

Mayock called him a "tackling machine". If he can get healthy, he'll be our Mike for the next 10 years.

Doesn't mean it is true either.
